While this is a great time to indulge in all the delicious foods and drinks, it\u2019s important to be aware of the potential for food poisoning, also commonly referred to as foodborne illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/food-poisoning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 48 million Americans get food poisoning each year. While the majority of these cases don\u2019t require medical care, approximately 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths occur from food poisoning annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep reading to learn common causes and symptoms of food poisoning, how to prevent food poisoning, and an overview of treatment options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"causes\">What causes food poisoning?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food poisoning can be caused by more than 250 foodborne contaminants, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins, according to the CDC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The five most common organisms that cause food poisoning include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Staphylococcus aureus (Staph)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly found in sliced meats, sandwiches, pastries<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Salmonella<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly found in raw or undercooked chicken and other meats, eggs, raw fruits and vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Norovirus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly found in shellfish, leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, and contaminated water<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clostridium perfringens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly found in dried or precooked foods, such as beef roasts, poultry, and gravies<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Campylobacter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly found in raw or undercooked poultry, unpasteurized milk, and contaminated water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms\">Symptoms of food poisoning<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/digestive-diseases\/food-poisoning\/symptoms-causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, common symptoms of food poisoning include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or cramping of the stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms can vary, depending on the germ that caused the contamination. In most cases, food poisoning will cause only mild illness that will pass within a few hours to a few days. However, food poisoning can sometimes cause severe symptoms that require medical attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek immediate medical care if you experience any of the following symptoms:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloody diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea that lasts longer than three days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paralysis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tingling or numbness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of dehydration, such as infrequent urination or dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever greater than 102\u00b0F\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany of the symptoms of food poisoning are similar to those of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stomach-bug-in-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach bug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other GI problem,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinmochi.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eva Shelton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an internal medicine physician at the Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. \u201cThe distinguishing factor is timing. Food poisoning usually happens within hours of consuming the culprit food, while viral symptoms take days to kick in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"avoid\">How to prevent food poisoning<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper food handling is crucial for preventing food poisoning. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/food-poisoning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends the following four steps for food poisoning prevention:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clean: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain a clean food preparation environment. Wash hands, utensils, and work surfaces properly before, during, and after preparing food.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Separate:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Keep raw poultry, meat, and eggs separate from fresh produce and other ready-to-eat foods. Use separate utensils and work surfaces to avoid cross contamination of foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cook:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make sure food is cooked to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodsafety.gov\/food-safety-charts\/safe-minimum-internal-temperatures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minimal recommended internal temperature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to kill the germs that could cause food poisoning.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Chill:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ensure food is refrigerated within two hours of cooking or one hour of being exposed to temperatures above 90\u00b0F, such as outdoors during the summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re eating food that someone else prepared\u2014whether you\u2019re at a restaurant, cookout, or other event\u2014don\u2019t eat it if it smells or looks bad,\u201d advises Martha E. Rivera, MD, pediatrician, infectious disease physician, and Integrative medicine specialist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optimalhealthcarecenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimal Healthcare Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles, California. \u201cPrepared salads (potato, macaroni, pasta) need to be kept refrigerated to prevent foodborne illnesses from ruining the celebration. Hot dogs and other deli items should be cooked well and not left out for prolonged periods of time to prevent Listeria or other organisms from growing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"affected\">Who is most affected by food poisoning?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, you cannot prevent food poisoning [after you have already eaten] contaminated foods,\u201d Dr. Rivera says. \u201cAlthough, everyone is different and some are at higher risk of getting sick.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/people-at-risk-food-poisoning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are higher risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for experiencing symptoms after eating contaminated food include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infants and children younger than 5 years old<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults 65 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with weakened immune systems due to health conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, or HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"treatment\">Treatment options for food poisoning<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, food poisoning can be treated with proper hydration and rest. It may also be recommended to avoid certain foods until your symptoms subside.
