GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the intestine that helps with blood sugar control. GLP-1 agonists help enhance the effects of this naturally occurring hormone by:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing insulin secretion by the pancreas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreasing glucagon secretion from the pancreas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowing gastric emptying<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists&#8217; main effect is to lower blood glucose levels immediately following a meal. Because Ozempic works only when a person eats, it is less likely to cause low blood sugar levels (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/healthy-living\/medication-treatments\/blood-glucose-testing-and-control\/hypoglycemia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) when taken alone. Insulin must be injected at least once daily and, in some cases, up to three or four times daily.
