This describes the period of time leading up to menopause which can last years and be characterized by irregular menstrual cycles or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot flashes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or trouble sleeping. Some women experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">night sweats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal dryness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too. During perimenopause, sex hormone production varies greatly and contributes to these symptoms. Initially, it was thought that hormone replacement played a preventative role in these disease states. However, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone replacement therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HRT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) treatment arm was stopped years early due to early, significant findings of an association to increased rates of both cancer and cardiovascular events. This study has had profound impacts on the use of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HRT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in premenopausal, menopausal, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postmenopausal women<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The WHI study focused on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral estrogen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage forms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HRT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/est-estrogens-methyltest\/what-is\">combination products<\/a> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progesterone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are other forms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/estrogens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estradiol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal rings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal creams<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transdermal patches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, not everyone will be a candidate for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone replacement therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopausal symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/menopause-questions-and-answers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. Generally, initiating hormone therapy after the age of 60 is not recommended, and continuing past the age of 65 is also not recommended. Patients who have an active or past case history of thromboembolism, deep venous thrombosis (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/deep-vein-thrombosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DVT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), thrombophlebitis, stroke, or myocardial infarction (heart attack) have a contraindication to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estradiol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> therapy. Those with a family history of these events may not be an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estradiol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> candidate either. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormone replacement therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HRT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) increases the risk of other disease states such as dementia and gallbladder disease as well. Allergic or hypersensitive reactions to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products would also be a contraindication for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estradiol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what are some other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment options<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in lieu of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estradiol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help with symptoms and effects of menopause? While replacing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in patients with low levels seems like an obvious solution, there are other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment options<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopausal symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Patients with a higher risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have options for treating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
