When was the last time you checked their immunization records?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it turns out, their first year is a critical time to ensure your kids are current on all their vaccines, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/doctors\/feemster-kristen-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristen Feemster,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, research director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia and medical director of the Immunization Program and Acute Communicable Diseases at the Philadelphia Department of Health. In fact, most institutions of higher education in the United States require proof of vaccination from incoming students in a written statement from a medical provider before the academic year begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should college students get vaccinated?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are many important features of entering college that make being up to date on immunizations especially important,\u201d she says. \u201cFor many students, they\u2019re going to be living in a congregate setting\u2014they may be living in a dormitory or sharing an apartment. There may be students who are planning to spend some time abroad as a part of their program or might be engaging in other work activities, like health sciences, that might increase their potential exposure.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/health\/state-vaccine-requirements-for-college-entry.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legally require<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proof of full vaccination for specific diseases for all enrolling students. Doing this helps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases among university students who are living in close proximity in campus residence halls. Higher education institution vaccination mandates are determined by state laws, and vary by state. Most states have left it up to individual universities to decide whether to implement vaccine mandates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, hepatitis B or meningococcal vaccines are currently mandated by 34 states and the District of Columbia for college attendees. Depending on state law, exemptions may be provided for medical and religious reasons or personal beliefs. Whether or not educational institutions can<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/confusing-rules-loopholes-legal-issues-college-vaccination-plans-are-mess-n1267981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legally penalize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a student for not adhering to vaccination requirements is murky, as there is no federal guidance on the matter. For information on current state vaccine requirements for college campuses and what is considered an approved exemption, check <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/health\/state-vaccine-requirements-for-college-entry.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College vaccination requirements<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can request a copy of your student\u2019s immunization record from their\u00a0primary healthcare provider\u2019s office. A photocopy is usually due to the university\u2019s registrar\u2019s office. Typically, the following vaccinations are recommended for college:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#measles\">Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#hpv\">Human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#meningococcal\">Meningococcal<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#flu\">Influenza<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#covid\">COVID-19<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while many community colleges and universities have their own set of college immunization requirements (i.e., one to two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) and one to two doses of meningococcal are the most common, according to Dr. Feemster), you shouldn\u2019t rely on the school\u2019s shortlist to ensure your students are fully protected. Here are five important college vaccines your children should have before heading off to campus for the fall semester:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"measles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people born after 1957 in the U.S. are immunized against measles, but sometimes they missed a dose in childhood. Without both required shots, your college student may not have full immunity. Certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/schedules\/hcp\/imz\/adult-conditions.html#note-mmr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special situations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may require that you check your child\u2019s immunity by getting bloodwork done. Check your child\u2019s immunization records, and schedule a booster if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/measles-booster\/\"><b>Do you need a measles booster?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hpv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. In fact, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/hpv\/stdfact-hpv.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), some 79 million Americans (mostly in their late teens and 20s) have the disease. And while HPV often clears up on its own, it can also cause some serious health issues. \u201cThe reason why we worry about HPV,\u201d says Dr. Feemster, \u201cis because it can lead to cancer\u2014it\u2019s known to cause cervical cancer and a few other anal or genital cancers.\u201d The HPV vaccine is, therefore, one of the only vaccines to actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer. (Though it does not protect against all strains of HPV.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The schedule: The HPV vaccine (one of the most commonly known by the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gardasil-9\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardasil 9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is multi-dose. Healthcare professionals typically recommend administering the first dose at the age of 11 or 12 (before kids become sexually active), followed by a second dose at least six months later. If your child is 15 years of age or older when they receive their first dose, they\u2019ll need three doses of the vaccine before starting college, on a schedule of zero, two, and six months, according to Dr. Feemster.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gardasil-9\"><b>Get Gardasil 9 coupons<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"meningococcal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Meningococcal (meningitis)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacterium that can cause meningitis (swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and sepsis. Both can be life-threatening. \u201cThis is an infection that\u2019s not very common compared to some other things like influenza, but when it does happen, it can take hold very quickly and make you very sick,\u201d says Dr. Feemster. Meningitis can be spread through phlegm and saliva, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/meningococcal\/about\/risk-factors.html\">according to the <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/meningococcal\/about\/risk-factors.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, college students are at a slightly elevated risk of contracting the disease, compared to their peers who are not attending college.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mening\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are two types of meningococcal vaccines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) vaccination:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This multi-dose vaccine protects against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mening\/public\/adolescent-vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meningococcal serogroups:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A, C, W, and Y. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first meningitis vaccine is usually administered around the age of 11 or 12, with a second dose at the age of 16. However, if your student is 16 or older when they get their first shot, they only need the one, according to Dr. Feemster.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Serogroup B meningococcal (MenB) vaccination: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This 2- or 3-dose series protects against the meningococcal serogroup B. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Meningitis B infection is rare, the vaccine can be given to anyone over the age of 10, ideally teens between the ages of 16-18 years old. It can be given alone or in conjunction with the meningococcal conjugate booster.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no shot available that protects against all 5 serogroups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/bexsero-meningitis-b-vaccine\/\"><b>Everything you need to know about the Bexsero vaccine<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Influenza<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get the flu vaccine, and, says Dr. Feemster, campus students should be particularly mindful about rolling up their sleeves and getting the shot. \u201cEspecially on a college campus, where you are very close to your fellow students and friends, you may have even more opportunity for exposure,\u201d she explains. \u201cGetting a flu shot every year is an important part of general prevention activities.\u201d According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/infectious-diseases\/national-survey-on-college-students-flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, only about 46% of college students get the vaccine. (That\u2019s an F grade for Flu Shots 101!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The schedule: The influenza vaccine\u2014which typically protects against the three-to-four most common types of the virus during a given season\u2014should be given annually. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flublok-quadrivalent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flublok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afluria-quadrivalent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afluria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some popular brand-name flu vaccines. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/keyfacts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends getting the flu shot by late October before the height of flu season. (It takes about two weeks for the antibodies to build up and protect against influenza.) COVID-19<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While college immunization requirements were updated to include the COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic, many no longer require it. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews4.com\/news\/nation-world\/over-100-colleges-still-have-covid-vaccine-requirements-ahead-of-2023-school-year-report-says-johns-hopkins-harvard-rutgers-coronavirus-pandemic-vax-health-sickness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many still do<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At institutions requiring it, students, faculty, and staff who come to campus may be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/interim-considerations-us.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the following vaccinations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College vaccine recommendations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the HPV, meningitis, and flu shots are imperative, Dr. Feemster recommends checking that your college-bound kids are current on all routinely recommended immunizations, especially MMR and varicella (chickenpox).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to check out the CDC\u2019s full list of recommended immunizations for adults 19 years and older:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human papillomavirus (HPV):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2-3 doses based on age at initial vaccination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Meningococcal (MenACWY and MenB):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1-3 doses if at risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Influenza (IIV, RIV, or LAIV):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1 dose per year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap or Td):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1 dose of Tdap, then 1 dose of Td booster every 10 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1-2 doses if at risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Varicella (VAR):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2 doses if born in or after 1980<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pneumococcal (PCV13 and PPSV23):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1-2 doses if at risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hepatitis (HepA and HepB):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2-3 doses based on vaccine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1-3 doses if at risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/polio\/public\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Polio (IPV)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Individuals who have not received the vaccine as a child should receive 3 doses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your student\u2019s institution or program of study may have specific requirements, and you will want to make sure you are familiar with them in advance.
