To better understand how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movantik<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works, let\u2019s take a look at how opioid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause constipation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as oxycodone, oxycontin, morphine, dilaudid (also referred to as narcotic pain meds, exert their pain relieving effects by its actions on 3 specific receptors: mu, delta, and kappa. Think of the receptors as the lock and the opioids as the key that can open the lock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is, these receptors are not only located in pain nerves, but also along our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GI) tract (specifically the mu receptor). So, when you take an opioid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not only do the pain nerve fibers become desensitized, but the motility (movement) of the GI tract also becomes affected. When the mu receptor in the GI tract becomes activated by opioids, three main changes occur: decreased contractions of the GI tract, increased absorption of fluid from the GI tract lumen, and decreased secretion of fluid into the lumen of the GI tract (the last two changes both make it more dry and less lubricated in the GI tract). This results in constipation, which can be severe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/constipation-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use of opioid<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some patients may not respond to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movantik<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other patients&#8217; insurance may not cover the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movantik<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> b. Still others may have side effects to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naloxegol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which may include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioid withdrawal symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fortunately, there are several alternative medications for constipation that can be tried.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peripheral<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opioid antagonists: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relistor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methylnaltrexone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symproic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naldemedine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and Entereg (Alvimopan). These three alternatives work in the same way that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movantik<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works, by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK493184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blocking the opioid action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mu receptor. However, it should be noted that Entereg is only indicated to treat postoperative ileus (lack of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contractions following surgery). This is a slightly different situation than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OIC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, the two conditions both involve constipation contributed to by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opiates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also three other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicated to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC): <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amitiza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lubiprostone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Linzess (linaclotide), and Trulance (plecanatide).
