It is also prescribed to prevent strokes in people who have both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left ventricular hypertrophy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is sometimes used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Losartan-Potassium-losartan-potassium-24322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat heart failure. Also sold under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand name<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cozaar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cozaar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> belongs to a family of drugs called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/angiotensin-ii-receptor-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angiotensin II receptor antagonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or blockers) (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ARBs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). These drugs widen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by blocking a hormone called angiotensin that causes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to constrict and narrow. Compared to some other medications, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has few <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, like any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are always possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-losartan-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of losartan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/losartan-potassium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has relatively few side effects. In studies, upper respiratory infections (colds) were the most common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but only occurred in about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=d5571a70-fe83-4277-ac42-ffaff2e051b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% of patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (versus 7% who were given a placebo). Most other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have an incidence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Losartan-Potassium-losartan-potassium-24322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% or less<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a highly tolerated drug. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/55005\/losartan\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people being treated for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper respiratory infection style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9949448f-c3b9-44ee-94ed-c1aca8c90f39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic losartan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of losartan include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dangerously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dangerously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high potassium levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney impairment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span throat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"weight-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight changes\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight changes have not been reported as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speculate that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help people lose weight. That\u2019s because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Losartan-Potassium-losartan-potassium-24322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 1%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report a decrease in appetite as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Because this is a rare <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people should not expect to lose weight when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless they adopt a weight-loss diet and exercise regimen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heart-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than 1% of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience a heart rate problem (arrhythmia) including atrial fibrillation, ventricular fibrillation, slow heart rate, rapid heart rate, heart block, or a worsening of existing arrhythmias. This doesn\u2019t mean that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes heart problems. In fact, some research shows it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16424784\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can improve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heart rate problems when combined with other drugs. However, anyone experiencing fainting, heart fluttering, palpitations, chest pain, or shortness of breath should immediately contact a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no matter what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sexual-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual dysfunction is only rarely reported in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help with sexual dysfunction. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11370797\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improved sexual frequency and satisfaction in both men and women. If, however, you experience a decline in sexual function while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or any drug, get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s angiotensin blocking effects begin within a week of starting treatment and peak in three to six weeks. Many common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if experienced, will appear within that time, including dizziness, nasal congestion, muscle pain, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chest pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and dry mouth. Heart rhythm problems, though rare, could also begin shortly after starting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the other hand, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014including severe hypersensitivity reactions\u2014could happen after the very first dose. Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may only occur well after the start of therapy, including infection, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and muscle damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body takes about two hours to break down half a dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and another six to nine hours to break down its metabolite. It takes between a few hours and two days after taking the last dose for transient <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to vanish. Most will. Some, like infections of the sinuses and throat, may hang on for a few days. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like high blood potassium or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be resolved by reducing the dose or switching drugs. Sometimes other treatments are also required.. More <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as muscle damage, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could take more time and treatment to get better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some serious but rare <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as kidney damage or heart damage may have lifelong consequences. Some people who use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the long term may experience a decline in kidney function. A healthcare provider will check kidney function and other blood tests while taking losartan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contraindictions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a well-tolerated drug, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s safe for everyone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can\u2019t be given to people who are allergic to the drug or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ARBs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The risk of a severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is too great. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also contraindicated in pregnant women, particularly in the second and third <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trimesters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause severe harm to a fetus, even resulting in fetal death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be given to most adults and children who are 6 years of age and older. It is commonly prescribed to senior citizens, though smaller doses may be used because of age-related decline in kidney function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned earlier, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is contraindicated in pregnant women during the second and third <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trimesters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though not prohibited, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generally avoid giving it to mothers who are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s unknown whether <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is present in breast milk, but there are other blood pressure drugs that are considered safer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has issued a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to discontinue <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as soon as pregnancy is detected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ARBs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are less effective at lowering blood pressure for Black patients. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may add a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reach blood pressure goals. In addition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=d5571a70-fe83-4277-ac42-ffaff2e051b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be as effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at reducing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of stroke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or heart attack for Black patients, and there is a higher risk of severe allergic reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medical conditions might be worsened by taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
