If so, what exercises for digestion work best?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-benefits-of-exercise-for-digestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 benefits of exercise for digestion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that adding exercise to your daily routine can make you more regular and less gassy,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve your metabolism<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">balance your gut microbiome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Certain exercises may be better than others, though, and it\u2019s important to talk to your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routines, especially if you live with a serious digestive condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, a lack of exercise can exacerbate certain digestive issues, including<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation, heartburn, and reflux<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Exercise can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/common-causes-of-constipation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase activity in your gut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can help excrete fecal matter. Additionally, exercise can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16028436\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce total colon transit time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ensuring that defecation is more frequent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-gas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Gas<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever had the embarrassing experience of letting loose some gas during a yoga class, you are not alone. In fact, exercise is a great way to reduce gas and bloating. For example, astudy published in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33868611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroenterology and Hepatology from Bed to Bench<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that taking a 10-15 minute walk after a meal was effective at reducing gas, bloating, belching, and abdominal pain from gas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-metabolism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Metabolism<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is well known that regular exercise can help balance your metabolism so that you remain at a healthy weight, but did you also know that a well-regulated metabolism means healthier digestion? \u201cExercise improves metabolism, which can reduce the risk of reflux, gallbladder disease, fatty liver disease, and various cancers involved with digestion,\u201d explains<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plateandcanvas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taylor Stolt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RDN, a registered dietitian specializing in gut health. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-gut-microbiome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Gut microbiome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-gut-health-impacts-your-well-being\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brains and guts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are well connected; for example, you\u2019ve probably noticed that stress gives you stomach cramps, gas, or loose stools. This not only helps with digestive upsets like constipation, but can have long-term positive effects on your overall<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-gut-health-impacts-your-well-being\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digestive health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digestivemed.com\/vanessa-mendez-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanessa M\u00e9ndez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a triple board-certified gastroenterologist, internist, and lifestyle medicine physician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExercise can help reduce contact time between your stool (and the environmental toxins and pathogens that come with it) and the gastrointestinal mucus layer, thus, reducing the risk of colon cancer, diverticulosis, and inflammatory bowel disease,\u201d Dr. M\u00e9ndez explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"types-of-exercise-that-help-digestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of exercise that help digestion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to exercises to improve digestion, experts agree that light to moderate exercises are the way to go. The best exercises to help digestion include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body weight exercises<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking and gentle yoga can be most helpful for digestion, especially when you are in a flare, says Dr. M\u00e9ndez. For gas relief and reducing bloating after eating, her favorite yoga poses include seated forward bends, twists, child\u2019s pose, knees-to-chest, standing forward fold, and bridge pose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there may be certain exercises to avoid, especially if your gut is acting up. \u201cRunning and high intensity exercise can shunt blood away from the gut, which can lead to gut inflammation and \u2018leaky gut\u2019 and make digestion worse,\u201d Stolt suggests. Some people may do fine with these higher intensity exercises, however, and if you have always done them and do not have gut issues, feel free to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"when-is-the-best-time-to-use-exercise-to-help-with-digestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When is the best time to use exercise to help with digestion?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard it\u2019s important to wait a certain amount of time after eating to exercise. But it depends on the type of exercise you plan on doing. Some light exercise after a meal is usually fine\u2014and actually beneficial to digestion. But if you are planning to exercise intensely or perform abdominal exercises, you should wait about 30-90 minutes after eating, says Volpe.
