But did you know that dogs can get sunburns too? Just like humans, dogs need protection from the sun\u2019s harmful UVA and UVB rays.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-dogs-get-sunburn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can dogs get sunburn?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any pet that spends more than five to 10 minutes outside daily can get a sunburn. Dogs with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white or light-colored coats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thin coats, or hairless breeds are susceptible. Other factors that can make a dog more likely to burn include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightly pigmented noses and eyelids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illnesses or genetic problems that cause hair loss or coat thinning, such as flea infestation, or bacterial or fungal infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic skin conditions, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eczema-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atopic dermatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas that have been clipped or shaved for surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas of scar tissue\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auto-immune diseases (sun exposure could cause worsening of existing conditions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxycycline-monohydrate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make a dog more sun sensitive<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs are most vulnerable to sun damage on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">face<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (especially around the mouth, nose, and eyelids), ears (especially the tips), belly, groin area, inside of legs, and the tail (especially the tip).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some breeds of dogs, such as doodles and poodles, do better with a shorter trim for the summer. But for most dogs, shaving makes them more vulnerable to the heat. Their coat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps keep them cooler<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and protects them from sun exposure. Shaved skin may be extra sun sensitive as it has had less exposure previously. In other words, check with your vet before shaving your dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"are-some-dogs-more-susceptible-to-sunburn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are some dogs more susceptible to sunburn?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/retrievist.akc.org\/reviews\/best-dog-sunscreen-reviews-protect-your-dogs-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog breeds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greater risk of sunburn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Breeds that pink up in the sun <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caninejournal.com\/best-dog-sunscreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American hairless terrier<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian sheepdogs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beagles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boxer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulldogs (especially white ones)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese crested<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalmatians<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogo argentino<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden retrievers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greyhound<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow Labrador retrievers\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexican hairless dog\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pit bull<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weimaraner<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whippets<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms-of-dog-sunburn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of dog sunburn<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re spending time out in the sun with your four-legged friend, it\u2019s important to keep an eye on them to avoid sunburn. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetwest.com.au\/pet-library\/sunburn-and-your-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a dog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a sunburn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink, red, and\/or tender skin (may get worse over a few days)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin that is warm to the touch<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry, cracked, and\/or flaky skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curling at the ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently itching, biting, or scratching in tender areas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whimper, shrink away, or act in pain when petted or touched<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blistering or scaling of the skin (if you notice pus, that is a sign of infection that needs immediate medical attention)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slight fever (in more severe cases)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy (in more severe cases)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunburn or repeated UV exposure could <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead to skin cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. \u201cSome breeds are more predisposed [to skin cancer], like pit bulls or pit bull-related dogs like bulldogs,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/h%C3%A9ctor-p%C3%A9rez-20973435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H\u00e9ctor P\u00e9rez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, a clinical and research veterinarian in Puerto Rico. \u201cI see that here very, very frequently. We do surgery on skin cancer on bullies and pit-related dogs at least two to three [times] a month.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/skin-check\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as you would for yourself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, check your dog every few weeks, and bring them to the vet if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspcapetinsurance.com\/resources\/sun-safety-concerns-for-dogs-and-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you see signs such as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> red spots, lumps that look like warts, flakiness on the skin, or inflammation. The safest option for your pet is sunscreen labeled explicitly for dogs. It should be at least SPF 30. Use lotion or cream formulations so that your pet doesn&#8217;t inhale or get aerosol spray in their eyes. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/retrievist.akc.org\/reviews\/best-dog-sunscreen-reviews-protect-your-dogs-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended dog-safe sunscreens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available on Amazon or Chewy include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warren London Dog Sunscreen Spray<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucky Pup Sunscreen Dog Balm<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handy Hound SnoutScreen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Dog Nose It! If doggy sunscreen is not an option, products labeled for human babies may be okay if they don\u2019t contain zinc oxide or other zinc products found in many sunblocks, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), or salicylates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragrance-free and water-resistant is also best. Just be sure to consult with your veterinarian before using any product not specifically labeled for dogs. It\u2019s important to note that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventivevet.com\/dogs\/do-dogs-need-sunscreen-use-dog-safe-sunscreen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog safe doesn\u2019t mean cat (or other pets) safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Don\u2019t use sunscreen on your non-canine pets, including ones labeled for dogs, unless they specify they are safe for that animal and\/or you have talked to your vet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-apply-pet-sunscreen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to apply pet sunscreen<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before using sunscreen for dogs for the first time, try a small amount on a small area of skin to check for reactions. It\u2019s best to do this at least 24 hours before fully applying it if possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSimilar to humans, sunscreen should be applied at least 15 to 20 minutes before heading outside,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drjyl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jyl Rubin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, a veterinarian with Dr. Jyl\u2019s Mobile Vet Connection and Veterinary Hospital in Orangevale, California. \u201cApply sunscreen every one to three hours when outdoors for longer periods of time. If your dog is a swimmer (or likes to roll around in puddles, or chase hose water), dry them off and reapply afterward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being careful not to get any in your pup\u2019s eyes, apply the sunscreen, focusing on the nose, ears, belly, and groin area, and anywhere else your dog\u2019s skin is exposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs with lighter-colored, shorter, or thinner fur will need more sunscreen than dogs with thick, dark coats. If using a spray sunscreen, it\u2019s best not to spray it directly on your dog as it could get in their eyes or they may inhale it. Instead, spray it on your hands first, then apply it to your dog using your hands. Once your dog\u2019s sunscreen is applied, watch your dog closely and prevent them from licking it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dog-sunscreen-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog sunscreen alternatives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with sunscreen, a dog is not fully protected from the sun. Using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sun-protection-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional sun-protection measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keeps your dog safer and more comfortable. These steps are similar to humans. For example, stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day. For dogs most vulnerable to sun damage, Dr. P\u00e9rez recommends keeping them indoors during the day, especially peak hours\u2014from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\u2014and letting them get their outdoor exercise in at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When outside, provide lots of shade for your dog and access to drinking water. If your dog is extra sensitive, you can purchase a sun shirt with built-in UV protection, but make sure he doesn\u2019t get overheated when wearing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going to walk the dog a lot, you should probably clothe the dog,\u201d says Dr. P\u00e9rez. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the few times I\u2019m for clothing a dog, just to protect it from the sun.\u201d Don\u2019t forget booties to protect your feet from hot surfaces. If it\u2019s too hot for your feet, it\u2019s too hot for theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s important to note that sun protection isn\u2019t just for the summer. \u201cWhen it\u2019s snowing, there\u2019s a lot of reflection of the snow from the sun if it\u2019s a sunny day, and that reflection can hit the belly,\u201d Dr. P\u00e9rez says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dog-sunburn-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog sunburn treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, despite your best efforts, Fido ends up getting burned, there are things you can do to help him feel better. First and foremost, make sure to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/veterinaryemergencygroup.com\/blog\/sunburn-on-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep your dog hydrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while recovering from a sunburn. Offer them small amounts of ice chips, and provide them with plenty of fresh, clean water. Watch for signs of dehydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sunburn-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild sunburns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can apply cold compresses and apply dog-specific <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aloe-vera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aloe vera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gel topically to the area. If a burn is worse than slightly pink skin with no pain, your dog should be seen by a veterinarian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog is experiencing discomfort or pain, a veterinarian can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/doctor-treat-bad-sunburn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">address the sunburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical creams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wound cleansing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional therapy as needed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your dog out of the sun until the burn is completely healed. If your dog\u2019s skin is dry after a burn, virgin coconut oil or shea butter can be a good option for moisturizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs that sunburn is an emergency and your dog <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needs immediate medical care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin turns dark red or purple<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are blisters with pus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your dog is dehydrated (watch especially for your dog becoming weak or lethargic)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your dog has stopped eating and\/or drinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your dog is in a lot of pain (crying, whining, yelping, having difficulty moving without pain)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If any of these occur, or you think your dog needs help, take them to the vet immediately.
