Are <\/span>Jardiance<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span> the same thing?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Jardiance<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>metformin<\/span><\/a> are similar in that they are both intended for use only in <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span> (not for Type 1), they are both taken orally, and they are both part of a blood glucose lowering treatment plan that includes <\/span>diet<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>exercise<\/span><\/a>. They are, however, two different types of anti-diabetic medicines and they have different mechanisms of action.<\/span><\/p>\n

Metformin<\/span>, which was approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (<\/span>FDA<\/span>) in 1995, is often prescribed as a first-line treatment for <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span>, as recommended by many expert <\/span>diabetes treatment guidelines<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Metformin<\/span> works by reducing glucose production in the liver and by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. <\/span>Metformin<\/span> is available as a generic, making it relatively inexpensive. It is often combined with other medications that are used to treat <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span>. <\/span>Metformin<\/span> has been available in the past under the <\/span>brand names<\/span> Fortamet, Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza, and Riomet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jardiance<\/span> (generic name <\/span>empagliflozin<\/span>), a member of a relatively new anti-diabetic class of medicines called <\/span>sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors<\/span><\/a>, was approved by the <\/span>FDA<\/span> in 2014. It lowers <\/span>blood sugar levels<\/span> by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys and increasing glucose excretion in urine. <\/span>In <\/span>clinical trials<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Jardiance<\/span> demonstrated a reduction in the risk of major <\/span>cardiovascular<\/span> events such as <\/span>heart attacks<\/span> and strokes in people with <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span> who also had <\/span>cardiovascular<\/span> risk factors<\/span>. <\/span>Jardiance<\/span>, marketed by <\/span>Boehringer Ingelheim<\/span> and Eli <\/span>Lilly<\/span> and Company, is only available as the branded product and is considered expensive, particularly for those without insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is <\/span>Jardiance<\/span> or <\/span>metformin<\/span> better?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Jardiance<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span> are two of many antidiabetic medications that are available to treat <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span>. Both have been shown to be very effective at maintaining stable <\/span>blood glucose levels<\/span> and lowering <\/span>hemoglobin A1C<\/span><\/a> (also known as HbA1c), a simple blood test that measures average <\/span>blood glucose levels<\/span> over the previous three months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although there are some similarities between <\/span>Jardiance<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span>, there are also many differences. Not every <\/span>diabetes medication<\/span> is appropriate for every patient. <\/span>Healthcare<\/span> professionals are trained to decide which treatment, or combination of treatments, will work the best for individual patients. But it is important to understand the differences between <\/span>Jardiance<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span> so that patients can better understand the reasons for their <\/span>healthcare<\/span> professionals\u2019 choices.<\/span><\/p>\n

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes recommend <\/span>metformin<\/span> as the <\/span>first-line drug therapy<\/span><\/a>, along with diet and exercise, for patients with <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span>. The advantages of <\/span>metformin<\/span> include efficacy in lowering <\/span>blood glucose levels<\/span> and HbA1c, improving the body\u2019s response to insulin, the potential for <\/span>weight loss<\/span>, the low risk of causing <\/span>lower blood sugar<\/span> (<\/span>hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a>), and its availability as a generic, making it relatively inexpensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For those individuals with <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span> and established <\/span>cardiovascular disease<\/span> or <\/span>heart failure<\/span>, the ADA recommends the use of an <\/span>SGLT2 inhibitor<\/span>, such as <\/span>Jardiance<\/span>, to reduce the risk of <\/span>hospitalization<\/span> and death from <\/span>cardiovascular<\/span> events. <\/span>Jardiance<\/span> is only available as the branded medicine, and since there is no generic, it can be expensive, even with insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n
