It is often combined with other medications that are used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been available in the past under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand names<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fortamet, Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza, and Riomet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (generic name <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empagliflozin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a member of a relatively new anti-diabetic class of medicines called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was approved by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2014. It lowers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys and increasing glucose excretion in urine. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7382052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrated a reduction in the risk of major <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> events such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attacks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and strokes in people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who also had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marketed by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boehringer Ingelheim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Eli <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lilly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Company, is only available as the branded product and is considered expensive, particularly for those without insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-jardiance-or-metformin-better\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> better?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two of many antidiabetic medications that are available to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both have been shown to be very effective at maintaining stable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood glucose levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lowering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-a1c-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hemoglobin A1C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known as HbA1c), a simple blood test that measures average <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood glucose levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the previous three months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there are some similarities between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are also many differences. Not every <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is appropriate for every patient. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> professionals are trained to decide which treatment, or combination of treatments, will work the best for individual patients. Many of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> versions, including Glucophage, Glucophage XR, and Fortamet, are no longer available in the U.S. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used alone or combined with other anti-diabetic medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empagliflozin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) belongs to a group of medications called sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/jardiance-vs-invokana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invokana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (canagliflozin) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/farxiga\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farxiga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dapagliflozin). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available as a standalone drug and as a combination tablet with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand names<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/synjardy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synjardy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/synjardy-xr\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synjardy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> XR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"standard-dosages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standard dosages\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available as an oral tablet in strengths of 500 mg, 850 mg, and 1000 mg. It\u2019s available as an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tablet in strengths of 500 mg, 750 mg, 1000 mg, and as an oral solution (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Riomet) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> liquid formulation (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Riomet ER) in strengths of 500 mg\/5ml. The typical starting dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 500 mg two times daily or 850 mg taken once daily. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be taken with meals. Based on the response, the dosage may be increased by 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every two weeks, up to a total of 2,550 mg taken per day in divided doses. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starting adult dose is 500 mg once daily, which may be increased by 500 mg weekly to a maximum of 2000 mg daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available as an oral tablet in strengths of 10 mg and 25 mg. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.boehringer-ingelheim.com\/us\/products\/jardiance\/t2d\/dosing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starting dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 10 mg taken once daily.
