Your pet\u2019s doctor may do an exam and ask you some questions about your and your pet\u2019s lifestyle to determine the right course of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLantus glargine insulin is intended for human use and is not labeled for cats,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cat-world.com\/team\/jamie-whittenburg-dvm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie Whittenburg, DVM<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veterinarian at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cat-world.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat World<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petvetlubbock.com\/our-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingsgate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Animal Hospital in Texas. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with a prescription from your veterinarian, it is safe for cats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means that if you or a loved one takes Lantus, you cannot give your dose to your cat. You must get specific instructions on Lantus dosing for cats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considerations for using Lantus for cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Lantus is shown to be very effective, there are several considerations to take into account before choosing it as the right drug for your pet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administration and dosage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus is an injectable so you must be comfortable with that procedure. You may want your vet to demonstrate the proper administration prior to trying it yourself at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf poor injection technique is used, there is a possibility for infection or irritation at the injection site,\u201d Dr. Whittenburg says. \u201cOwners should look for redness, swelling, or pain in the area of the injections.\u201d Infections can become an emergency if not caught early.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correct dosage is important and missing a dose can cause increased urination or excess thirst. Contact your veterinarian to discuss what to do if you miss a dose or come up with a plan for if this happens ahead of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it last?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With most prescriptions, the dose begins working within one to two hours and lasts for 12 hours once your pet is on the right dose. Therefore, you will likely need to give your pet two doses a day. Depending on your pet\u2019s needs, they may only need one dose a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Conrad explains that, as your pet is starting a new insulin regimen, they will need to have their glucose monitored closely, sometimes for a few weeks. However, she says that since Lantus is well-tolerated by cats, this process often goes quicker for cats than dogs on this medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus requires refrigeration, so keep that mind, especially if you\u2019re going to be traveling with your pet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus for cats side effects\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding side effects, \u201cIn an ideal situation, insulin should not cause any side effects. Whenever a cat is started on insulin, their dose is carefully calculated to avoid any adverse effects,\u201d Dr. Conrad says. However, the surest sign something is off with the calculation is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of hypoglycemia in cats include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stumbling\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disorientation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat hasn\u2019t eaten enough that day or if they\u2019ve had too much insulin, they are at risk for hypoglycemia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some other medications that interact with Lantus, so make sure to tell your veterinarian all medications and supplements your pet is taking.
