The unfortunate reality is that many women have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18476941\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported breastfeeding challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can be mentally taxing for a new mom. Since so many factors are out of a mother\u2019s control, it\u2019s best to focus on the ones that are within reach, and a strong support system is at the top of the list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usbreastfeeding.org\/p\/cm\/ld\/fid=839\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support Changes Everything<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is this year\u2019s theme for National Breastfeeding Month. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he best recipe for breastfeeding success is a mother who feels well emotionally, before and during pregnancy, plus an established support network that can back her up if she needs help, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carlysnydermd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carly Snyder, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a psychiatrist specializing in reproduction and women\u2019s health in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us understand the <\/span><b>benefits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of breastfeeding, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/baby\/breastfeeding\/Pages\/Psychological-Benefits-of-Breastfeeding.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improvement to the emotional bond between mother and child<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/baby\/breastfeeding\/Pages\/Breastfeeding-Benefits-Your-Babys-Immune-System.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased immunity for the baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/15274-the-benefits-of-breastfeeding-for-baby--for-mom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of diarrhea, constipation, and gastroenteritis. The list goes on, and is exhaustive, but most of these benefits are for the baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first few weeks after birth are spent focusing on the health of the baby<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014tracking weight gain and important milestones; but a mother\u2019s mental health during this period should be a focus for medical practitioners, too. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of postpartum mental health issues that mothers can face, but the first few weeks following birth are a critical time for a mother\u2019s mental health in connection to her lactation experience (if she chooses to breastfeed) specifically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antidepressants-and-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants and pregnancy<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum depression and breastfeeding<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does breastfeeding affect your emotions? It\u2019s not a simple answer. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0278-6133.21.2.187\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that there is a positive link between a mother\u2019s mental health and breastfeeding, many experts and other studies say that the correlation is more complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 2011 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21734617\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a group of researchers examined the correlation between breastfeeding experiences and depression. The study concluded that a woman\u2019s negative experience with breastfeeding appeared to significantly impact her mental health. Women who disliked breastfeeding in the first week after birth or experienced pain while breastfeeding were at higher risk of postpartum depression than those who experienced an easier time breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nursing can be very difficult for some women, and this may translate to feelings of frustration and a sense of failure,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Snyder says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She adds that there is plenty of indirect research pointing to the correlation between breastfeeding and mental health, including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/m\/pubmed\/30696409\/?i=12&amp;from=breastfeeding%20postpartum%20depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that suggests that perinatal and postpartum depression can impact a mother\u2019s success at breastfeeding. And this becomes a vicious cycle as well-meaning fellow mothers, lactation consultants, and healthcare providers can add and compound feelings of inadequacy for new mothers with incessant talking about the superiority of breast milk, pushing them further toward depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadness doesn\u2019t directly affect milk supply, that\u2019s regulated by how often the baby feeds, but it can make new moms more likely to forget to drink or eat, which <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decrease milk supply. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wicbreastfeeding.fns.usda.gov\/low-milk-supply\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or lack of sleep, from parenting without support can decrease milk supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA new mother may begin to value herself based on her contributions to her baby,\u201d says Dr.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfmmh.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Montfort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a licensed psychologist with the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfmmh.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Maternal Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cInability to produce enough milk, difficulty with latching, and lack of desire to breastfeed can be experienced as personal failures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pressure society puts on mothers to breastfeed directly relates to the pressure that she puts on herself, suggests Taryn A. Myers, Ph.D., department of psychology chair at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Wesleyan University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some ways, we have swung too far in the direction of demanding breastfeeding and do not always take the health of the mother and child into account,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that every mother and her family have to make an informed choice about which way of feeding is best for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antidepressants-breastfeeding-nursing-moms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What depression medication can you take while breastfeeding?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support for maternal mental health changes everything<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it all comes back around to support: \u201cIf mom feels ashamed and unsupported, she is unlikely to share her feelings with others,\u201d Myers says. \u201cIf she feels supported\u2026she is more likely to talk about her struggles and to obtain necessary help. This will likely mean she will have a better breastfeeding outcome and also an improved mental health outcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who have support during their lactation journey, and a positive breastfeeding experience, may also have improved mental health, says a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1089\/bfm.2010.0097\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which reported that women felt increased confidence in their choice to breastfeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer to whether there is a correlation between breastfeeding and maternal mental health is complicated, but the need for maternal support in the postpartum period, reduced pressure on new mothers, and the chance to change their expectations seem like important next steps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI let moms know that breastfeeding is not an all or nothing proposition,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leighanneoconnor.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leigh Ann O\u2019Connor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. \u201cWhen there is a low milk supply, I show moms how to supplement feedings at the breast; for some moms this is empowering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are struggling with breastfeeding or your mental health, the best thing to do is to speak openly with your healthcare provider.
