Furthermore, as we age, our immune system weakens, making us more vulnerable to illnesses we encounter in daily life, at work, or on vacation. Most people were immunized against common diseases in childhood, but many don\u2019t realize their protection for some illnesses has worn off by the time they reach middle age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I think about immunizations for older adults, I approach it with a very common sense perspective,\u201d says Dr. Ellow. \u201cWe have the tools to combat one of our longest and most formidable enemies and we as a community need to make sure we\u2019re actually utilizing them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite available vaccines that can prevent disease, every year thousands of people suffer from long-term illness, are hospitalized, or even die from vaccine-preventable diseases; the statistics reported by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), the leading national public health institution in the U.S., are staggering. A booster shot, or repeat vaccination, in adulthood can keep you from getting sick unnecessarily <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from infecting others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While vaccines are important for the general population, health professionals recommend that those who are midlife-plus boost their immune systems against the following illnesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Flu<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/adults\/vpd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that all adults get a flu shot every year, especially older adults. Since 2010, the flu has resulted in up to 56,000 deaths and 710,000 hospitalizations. Those 65-plus are even more at risk: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/highrisk\/65over.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 50%-70<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">% of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations occur in people over the age of 65. Infections can last for 10 weeks or longer. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there are 24.1 million cases of pertussis each year and more than 160,000 deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults who weren\u2019t vaccinated in childhood should get the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tdap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine, followed by a\u00a0booster shot every 10 years\u2014especially when spending time with infants who have not been immunized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/boostrix\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get your <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pertussis vaccine coupon here<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. For example, if bacteria enter the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bloodstream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can spread to organs and lead to organ failure. Annually in the United States, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumococcal pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has resulted in 320,000 infections, 150,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths, mostly among older adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health officials recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumococcal vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adults over 65, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adults with certain chronic health conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current vaccination recommendation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s for people 65 years of age and older are one dose of PCV20 (Prevnar 20) or one dose of PCV15 (Vaxneuvance) followed by PPSV23 (Pneumovax 23) at least one year later.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pneumovax-23\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get your <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia vaccine coupon here<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. It is caused by herpes zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox; if you have had chickenpox, you can get shingles. \u201cShingles is actually very scary because technically we already have it,\u201d Dr. Ellow says. \u201cIt\u2019s just waiting for you to let your guard down. I\u2019ve seen multiple patients struggling to move without pain because [even] the touch of their clothing on the rash is agony.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that healthy adults age 50 and older get vaccinated against shingles, even\u00a0 if you already had shingles (wait until the rash is gone!) or are unsure if you ever had chickenpox. Almost one in three people in the United States will develop shingles during his or her lifetime, and the risk increases with age. Shingrix is the preferred vaccine, with over 90% efficacy in preventing shingles and PHN. Adults should receive two doses\u2014the second dose is given two to six months after the first. For children ages 6 months to 4 years, this includes the primary series. For all individuals 5 years and older, that means a primary immunization series plus the appropriate booster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anyone older than 50 is eligible to receive a second booster shot of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine 4 months or more after receiving a booster shot of any approved COVID-19 vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals in this age range with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlying medical conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including but not limited to cancer, lung disease, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, dementia, and HIV are most likely to benefit from the extra dose due to their increased risk of severe illness and hospitalization from COVID-19.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remember that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/fast-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every immunization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t right for every person.
