Normal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels in the blood are between 3.6 to 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol\/L). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperkalemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when blood <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels go above 5.5 mmol\/L., can lead to serious health issues and will likely require medical care. A reading above 6.5 mmol\/L can cause heart problems that may even be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life-threatening<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and require immediate medical attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common cause of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperkalemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CKD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). When the kidneys are not working as they should, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can build up in the blood. It works by binding with excess <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GI) tract to remove it from the body before it can be absorbed into the bloodstream. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veltassa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes in a powder form and is mixed with water to be taken as an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral suspension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/veltassa.com\/themes\/custom\/veltassa_patient\/pdfs\/pi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 95% of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veltassa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduced their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels and kept them within the normal range over the 52-week period of the study.
