Trazodone is an older generation antidepressant that is approved to treat major depressive disorder. It has been used to help with anxiety as well, but most commonly is used off-label to take advantage of its tendency to cause sedation and help with insomnia. It belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drugs that alter brain chemistry to permit greater control over mood. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">razodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects the body in the same way, so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are similar to its better-known cousins like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paxil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paroxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only available as a generic but used to be sold under the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand names<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desyrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oleptro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-trazodone-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of trazodone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most commonly experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, affecting almost one in four people taking the drug. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=71961ab1-951d-1493-f76c-2ff25cca2a85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people have reported dizziness or high blood pressure. rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, approximately one in a hundred people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced weight gain. Later research indicates the incidence may be as high as 5%, although research suggests that as much as 6% of patients experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. No matter what the case, however, always get medical advice whenever weight goes up or down unintentionally when taking a drug. A nutritionist\u2019s advice may be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sexual-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8061302\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly every person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who takes an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience some reduction in genital sensitivity. For this reason, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are frequently used <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat premature ejaculation. Impotence, however, is a rare problem in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, occurring in less than 2% of participants in the initial clinical trials. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Trazodone-Hydrochloride-trazodone-hydrochloride-3033.1692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research indicates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that around 1.5% of patients will experience a decrease in sexual desire and less than 1% will have problems with orgasms because of genital numbing. The good news is that most people will experience a return of genital sensitivity, sexual desire, and sexual function when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is stopped. If there are problems with sexual function, get medical advice from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescriber<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"urinary-incontinence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary incontinence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only rarely experience urinary incontinence as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the incidence is between 0% and 1%, depending on the study. If urinary incontinence is a problem, keep in mind that there may be other causes besides <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Talk to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the best way to proceed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects for females<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are women more likely to experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21047161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question hasn\u2019t been answered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The best that can be said is that people will have individual responses to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to be balanced against the good the drug does, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspharmacist.com\/article\/women-and-depression-does-gender-matter-43010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seem to benefit women more than men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though we don\u2019t know why.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The serotonin effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occur within half an hour of taking a dose, so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dizziness, trouble sleeping, nausea, urinary incontinence, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blurred vision<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, genital numbing, and similar <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are sometimes experienced early or even after the first dose. Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as sexual dysfunction or weight changes, may develop and worsen over time. Among <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heart problems can occur early and unexpectedly, particularly changes in the heart\u2019s rhythm. Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may entail lifelong problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some people cannot safely take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients under 18 years of age.
