But there are benefits to taking some kind of blood pressure medication, whether it\u2019s amlodipine or something else, before you go to sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour blood pressure varies throughout the day, [and is usually] highest in the morning and drops at night,\u201d Dr. Wong says. \u201cBut sometimes as we age, that nighttime drop doesn\u2019t happen, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.\u201d Taking amlodipine or another prescribed blood pressure medication can decrease those spikes, says Dr. Wong, and improve your overall health outcomes. Talk with your healthcare provider about the best time to take amlodipine. Amlodipine must be taken every day, so you can also discuss ways to remember to take your medicine every day, such as setting reminders on your phone or using a pill organizer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-how-long-does-amlodipine-stay-in-your-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. How long does amlodipine stay in your system?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to ambulatory care pharmacist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/maranda-herring-pharmd-bcacp-ba070579\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MaRanda Herring, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, amlodipine has a half-life of about 30 to 50 hours, which means it takes that amount of time for half of the drug to be eliminated from the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[However], it takes about five times as long for the drug to be completely out of your system,\u201d she warns, \u201c[which] means some amlodipine could remain in your system for up to 11 days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-does-amlodipine-lower-heart-rate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Does amlodipine lower heart rate?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, it doesn\u2019t impact heart rate. Beta blockers work this way, but Dr. Herring says calcium channel blockers work predominantly on the peripheral arteries, dilating these blood vessels and reducing blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-can-i-take-amlodipine-every-other-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Can I take amlodipine every other day?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the long half-life of amlodipine, says Dr. Herring, its blood pressure-lowering effects start to wane after 24 hours. If you\u2019re relying on the drug to keep your blood pressure low or your angina at bay, taking amlodipine every other day won\u2019t be often enough, she warns: \u201cWhile some medications may be taken every other day, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/changes-you-can-make-to-manage-high-blood-pressure\/managing-high-blood-pressure-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends against this practice with blood pressure medications like amlodipine.\u201d Take amlodipine exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional to get the most benefit from the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-what-are-the-dangers-of-taking-amlodipine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. What are the dangers of taking amlodipine?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, amlodipine is considered a safe and effective antihypertensive drug when taken at the correct dosage. It\u2019s been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openheart.bmj.com\/content\/3\/2\/e000473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed widely for over 20 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, per a 2016 research article in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Heart<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That means we have a strong body of evidence for its use in treating hypertension and angina. Controlling blood pressure helps to reduce your risk of medical conditions including heart attack, heart disease, and stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, amlodipine can be dangerous when taken in excessive amounts. It\u2019s a common cause of drug overdose in cardiovascular medicine and its toxicity can be fatal, but it\u2019s important to note that several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atm.amegroups.com\/article\/view\/17958\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported cases of amlodipine overdose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involved extremely high amounts of the drug (i.e., 50 or more tablets). Symptoms of an amlodipine overdose may include fast heartbeat, fainting, and\/or redness and warmth in the arms and legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In typical dosages, amlodipine can cause arterial dilation, says Dr. Wong, which can lead to swelling in the legs, excess amounts of blood pooling or collecting in the veins, dizziness, headaches, and flushing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though many people believe amlodipine can cause weight gain, that hasn\u2019t been widely seen in studies or trials; it may happen in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3518853a-4c5b-4161-a178-8da7f656f009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 1% of people taking it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You should be careful when standing or changing positions, for example, if you\u2019re prone to dizziness while taking this drug. In some cases, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral problems like bleeding gums can occur<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; you may also notice a temporary increase in headaches until you adjust to the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although amlodipine is a generally safe drug, there are a few common interactions to keep in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine can increase the amount of certain drugs in the body to potentially toxic amounts, says Dr. Herring, noting that conservative dosing and close monitoring is required if you need to take it with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cholesterol-lowering statin, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclosporine-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclosporine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a transplant drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other drugs can also affect the absorption of amlodipine, she says: \u201cMedications that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, like ketoconazole, itraconazole, and ritonavir, may slow the breakdown of amlodipine in the body and lead to low blood pressure and other complications.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diltiazem is another calcium channel blocker that affects amlodipine absorption. Amlodipine should not be taken in combination with diltiazem or any other calcium channel blockers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always tell your prescribing providers about any and all drugs\u2014including prescription and over-the-counter meds and vitamins or supplements\u2014you\u2019re taking so they can advise you on interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One good thing about amlodipine is that you can take it with or without food, which makes it easy to take at bedtime if that\u2019s what you choose.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many other medications, you should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/amlodipine\/how-and-when-to-take-amlodipine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid taking amlodipine with grapefruit or grapefruit juice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it can affect the drug\u2019s absorption. Some people also believe bananas and other high-potassium foods need to be avoided or limited with amlodipine, but that\u2019s typically more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lhsfna.org\/taking-medication-watch-what-you-eat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">true for beta blockers, not calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and, in any case, just avoid eating an excessive amount of potassium-rich foods and you should be fine!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, be mindful of how much alcohol you drink while taking amlodipine. \u201cWhile there is no serious interaction between amlodipine and alcohol, alcohol can make the side effects of amlodipine, like dizziness and lightheadedness, worse,\u201d says Dr. Herring. The combination of alcohol and amlodipine can cause severely low blood pressure. There are ways to mitigate some of these adverse effects. If you suffer from swollen legs, for example, Dr. Wong says you can wear compression socks, take diuretics, or add compatible drugs (such as nitrate vasodilators or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ace-inhibitors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to counteract some of these symptoms.
