Here\u2019s what else you need to know about getting these important medical devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do you need an EpiPen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious allergic reactions are the reason that you need easy access to an epinephrine auto-injector. When injected into your upper outer thigh muscle, the epinephrine will decrease your body\u2019s reaction to the allergen. It will relax the muscles in your airways to help you breathe easier and help lower your blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile fatal anaphylaxis is rare, one of the greatest risk factors for a fatal reaction is delayed administration of epinephrine,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakbrookallergists.com\/our-team\/zachary-e-rubin-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zachary Rubin, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist in Illinois and spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI). \u201cEpinephrine auto-injectors work very rapidly and are life-saving treatments.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a review of 164 deaths due to anaphylaxis, the median time interval between symptom onset and respiratory or cardiac arrest was 5 minutes to 30 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology (AAAAI), the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/conditions-treatments\/allergies\/anaphylaxis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common causes of anaphylaxis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are certain types of foods, insect stings, medications, and latex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools commonly require that students with known allergies like peanut allergies have an epinephrine auto-injector at school with them in case they are accidentally exposed. In fact, it\u2019s so important that students have access to them that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocklandurgentcare.net\/our-clinicians.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graig Straus, DNP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical director of the North Rockland Central School District in New York, stocks about a dozen epinephrine auto-injectors in each school in addition to any devices that students may bring themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA student who has an allergy can develop an anaphylaxis reaction, which will restrict their airway and keep them from breathing properly,\u201d Straus says. \u201cThe quicker we can mitigate that with an EpiPen, the better chance we have of controlling their airway and controlling the allergic response.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you need a prescription for an EpiPen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need a prescription to get an epinephrine auto-injector, so you\u2019ll need to see a healthcare provider. There have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weau.com\/2022\/01\/13\/lawmakers-consider-allowing-epinephrine-pens-without-prescription\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pass legislation to allow Epipens without prescription in some states, but it has not become law. If you are diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy such as a peanut allergy or a bee sting allergy, your healthcare provider can write a prescription for an EpiPen (or similar device). Then, like any prescription, you will need to fill and purchase it from a pharmacy (or online pharmacy).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is essential to have access to this medicine if you need it. In fact, it should be the first treatment used for an anaphylactic reaction. \u201cMedications such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xyzal-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xyzal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not as effective and do not work nearly as quickly, so they should not be used first,\u201d Dr. Rubin says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also routinely check the expiration date on your device. \u201cThere is a risk that the epinephrine will not be as effective once it is past the expiration date, which is after the last day of the month that is listed on the device,\u201d Dr. Rubin says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/allergy-survey\/\"><b>How do allergies affect quality of life?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get an EpiPen<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have a prescription for an epinephrine auto-injector, it\u2019s time to fill the prescription. But if you\u2019re concerned about the cost\u2013especially if you need to have more than one EpiPen\u2013you have a few options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check with your insurance company.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your insurance may cover part of or even the entire cost of a particular epinephrine auto-injector, so you will want to make sure you get a prescription for that specific one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for manufacturer discounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s always a good idea to check with the manufacturers to see if they offer a coupon or savings program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Kaleo, the company that manufactures the Auvi-Q auto-injector, offers a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auvi-q.com\/get-auvi-q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discount program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with certain types of insurance. The program is designed to reduce the out-of-pocket costs by $300. Another option is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epipen.com\/hcp\/about-epipen-and-generic\/help-your-patients-save\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyGenericEAI Savings Card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which reduces the cost of the generic version of the EpiPen by $25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider a generic version<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are generic versions available, and your provider can write a prescription for one of them, says Straus. In fact, he procures generic versions for the schools in his school system to keep costs down.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be prepared<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping an epinephrine auto-injector on hand for easy access is crucial, but it\u2019s just one element of being prepared. The AAAAI also recommends that you create an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/Aaaai\/media\/MediaLibraryRedesign\/Conditions%20Treatments\/Allergies\/Anaphylaxis-Emergency-Action-Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaphylaxis Action Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and keep it on file at your workplace (or your child\u2019s school or daycare, if your child is the one with the allergy) so that others will have access to the info they need in case of an emergency.
