If you catch any of the circulating coronavirus strains, you could feel just as miserable as if you had the original variant. Luckily, now there are medicines and treatments on the market to help you feel better faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are COVID antiviral pills?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCOVID-19 antiviral pills are a treatment that may help your body fight the virus by stopping the SARS-CoV-2 virus (the virus that causes COVID-19) from multiplying in your body,\u201d explains Janice Johnston, MD, chief medical officer and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redirecthealth.com\/about-us\/leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redirect Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis, in turn, lowers the viral load in your body and can boost your immune system to help against the virus.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December of 2021, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization for nirmatrelvir\/ritonavir, the generic form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/paxlovid-for-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an antiviral medication that works to improve symptoms of the omicron variant. Another antiviral pill used to treat the COVID-19 omicron variant is Lagevrio, commonly known by its generic name, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/molnupiravir-covid-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">molnupiravir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These antiviral medications are prescribed to prevent serious illness from COVID-19 that could lead to a hospital visit or death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these medications to work, they must be taken within the first five days of symptom onset, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcom.edu\/academics\/faculty\/samueljo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel M. John, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an associate professor of pharmacy practice at PCOM Georgia. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/what-should-i-do-if-i-think-i-have-covid\/\"><b>Steps to take if you think you have COVID<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-and-incubation-period\/\"><b>COVID symptoms and incubation period<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are COVID antiviral pills free?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCOVID-19 antiviral pills are available for free in the United States for those over the age of 12 that test positive for COVID-19,\u201d Dr. Johnston says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications are free due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/covidplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efforts by the White House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce the economic impact of COVID-19 and to get the country back to pre-pandemic life sooner. The Biden Administration bought COVID antiviral treatments like Paxlovid and Lagevrio, along with testing kits and vaccines, from the manufacturers and now pharmacies can order them for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/news\/headline\/2022-04-26-white-house-expands-access-covid-19-antiviral-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the federal government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When this stockpile of COVID-19 resources runs out, consumers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/issue-brief\/implications-of-the-lapse-in-federal-covid-19-funding-on-access-to-covid-19-testing-treatment-and-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will no longer have free access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless the federal government agrees to make new provisions to purchase more. Through Medicare, and some state\u2019s Medicaid programs, beneficiaries will still receive these resources for free while the COVID-19 public health emergency continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicaid enrollees may also receive testing and treatment services for free for at least a year after the emergency period ends. However, Medicare beneficiaries may face out-of-pocket costs for testing and treatment-related services when the emergency period ends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does Paxlovid cost?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that these antiviral pills are completely free to those who need them for now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere should be no cost to the patient for Paxlovid, as it is currently being paid for by insurance carriers and the federal government,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Culpepper, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the clinical director of LifeMD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is unclear how long free Paxlovid will be available, but for now there is plenty left if you need it. The government made a deal with Pfizer to receive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-provide-us-government-additional-10-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 million treatment courses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and at the time of publishing, only about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/COVID-19\/Therapeutics\/Distribution\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.7 million courses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been used by consumers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are COVID-related medical care and treatments free?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment and medical care costs will depend on the severity of the COVD-19 symptoms you\u2019re experiencing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re asymptomatic, you\u2019ll require no treatment, so there are no associated costs. For mild to moderate symptoms, Dr. John explains that treatment would include antiviral medications, Paxlovid or Lagevrio, or anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFive anti\u2013SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies have received emergency use authorization from the FDA and are approved for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients who are older than 12 years and considered at high risk of progression to severe COVID-19,\u201d Dr. John says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoclonal antibodies are also part of the government\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phe.gov\/emergency\/events\/COVID19\/therapeutics\/Pages\/mAb-cost-and-coverage-faqs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stockpile of treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the antibodies are free to patients, the actual cost for administering this treatment isn\u2019t necessarily free. If you visit a doctor\u2019s office or hospital to receive the monoclonal antibodies, you\u2019ll likely be charged copays and other fees depending on your insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those with severe enough COVID-19 symptoms, such as cases requiring a hospital stay, there will likely be costs associated with treatment. The costs will depend on the length of stay and the treatment required, such as therapies for low oxygen levels or dehydration. Your insurance plan and the prices they\u2019ve set with the hospital, as well as if the hospital is in- or out-of-network, will all affect the total cost of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday, there is no requirement for insurance to provide coverage for COVID treatments, although some insurances have elected to cover these costs,\u201d Dr. John explains. \u201cWhat benefits your insurance does cover can vary from insurance to insurance. State Medicaid plans, though, are required to cover treatment costs without any cost-sharing up until the public health emergency ends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are COVID tests free?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCOVID tests were made available to the public in late 2021, allowing home testing to accelerate testing results,\u201d explains Dr. John. \u201cAccording to the Health and Human Services (HHS), low or no-cost COVID-19 tests are available to all patients in the U.S. at health centers and select pharmacies in the U.S.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the testing kits are free, the government has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/pharmacies-and-labs-scrambling-manage-loss-of-federal-covid-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">run out of money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reimburse the associated costs to perform these tests, like staffing clinicians and the time it takes to run the labs. If you do this testing outside of your home, like at a local diagnostic laboratory, you may now be faced with a fee if your insurance does not cover it.
