Keep reading to learn more about migraine statistics, including how common they are, who gets them, and what treatments are available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-migraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a migraine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A migraine is clinically defined as a specific type of headache that is felt more intensely, and usually has accompanying symptoms in addition to the pain felt in the head,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vernonwilliamsmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vernon Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified neurologist, pain management specialist, and founding director of the Center for Sports <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Pain Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The pain from a migraine can be very severe and interfere with activities of daily life. Like headaches, migraines can be brief, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-do-migraines-last\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lasting only a few hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the pain can stick around for several days.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the International Headache Society, using the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to make the diagnosis of migraine, a patient must have:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"at-least-5-attacks-fulfilling-the-following-criteria\"><b>At least 5 attacks fulfilling the following criteria:<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"headache-lasting-4-72-hours-untreated-or-unsuccessfully-treated\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache lasting 4\u201372 hours (untreated or unsuccessfully treated)<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"with-at-least-2-of-these-4-characteristics\"><b>With at least 2 of these 4 characteristics:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilateral location<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulsating (throbbing) quality<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate to severe intensity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aggravation by routine physical activity (e.g., walking, climbing stairs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"plus-at-least-1-of-the-following-associated-symptoms\"><b>Plus at least 1 of the following associated symptoms:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and\/or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sound (phonophobia)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"and\"><b>And:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No other diagnosis to explain these symptoms (such as an injury or tumor).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/types-of-headaches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type of headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually diagnosed based on the symptoms a person experiences. To confirm the diagnosis, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may ask about family history and perform a physical exam. Stress often triggers migraines in kids and teens, but hormone fluctuations, pain, smoking, and alcohol consumption tend to be common triggers in adulthood. of three months, in which at least 8 of the 15 headaches meet the definition of migraine (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ichd-3.org\/1-migraine\/1-3-chronic-migraine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine and overall health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraines can be debilitating and have a significant impact on a person\u2019s quality of life. You may not be able to perform everyday activities or go to work or school. In severe cases, you may need to go to the emergency room. Because of this, it&#8217;s important to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan to help lessen the frequency and severity of your migraines.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with migraine face an increased risk of more than 75 comorbid conditions (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrainedisorders.org\/comorbidities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Association of Migraine Disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with migraine are nearly four times more likely to experience insomnia (<\/span><a
