Because colds happen so often, many people continue to work or attend school while feeling just a little bit sick. Or they might take a day off, then return to work or school before symptoms subside. That\u2019s not the healthiest idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colds can lead to complications like sinusitis, bronchitis, and ear infections. They are also easily spread\u2014and the viruses that cause colds remain contagious for longer than most people suspect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-a-cold-spread\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does a cold spread?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most commonly, colds are caused by rhinoviruses and coronaviruses. These upper respiratory infections are spread in ways similar to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19\u2014when respiratory droplets from an infected person enter the body of a healthy person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These respiratory droplets may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/flu\/expert-answers\/infectious-disease\/faq-20057907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remain infectious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outside the body for several hours and even days, depending on where the droplets land, the amount of virus that lands on a surface, the type of surface it lands on, and other factors such as temperature and humidity. Cold symptoms such as sneezing and coughing propel these virus-laden droplets through the air, into the mouths and noses of others, and onto surfaces. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rhinoviruses\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most colds spread through the air and by touching a surface with viral particles on it, then touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/summer-cold\/\"><b>Can you catch a cold in the summer?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-is-a-cold-contagious\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long is a cold contagious?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe contagious period for a cold usually lasts five to seven days and up to two weeks,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neil Schachter, MD, a professor of pulmonary, critical care, and community medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/collections\/books-by-neil-schachter-md-880000054451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Good Doctor\u2019s Guide To Colds &amp; Flu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are over 200 types of cold viruses, and they can affect a person differently,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Schachter.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the answer to this question needs to cover a range of time.\u201d Typically, you are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contagious<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one to three days before symptom onset and at least five to seven days after the first signs of sniffles, sneezing, cough, headaches, or sore throat. Then, you can still be infectious up to two weeks after becoming ill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"when-is-a-cold-no-longer-contagious\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When is a cold no longer contagious?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The common cold has four stages, with symptoms usually peaking at three days when it is most contagious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Incubation period:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The time between exposure and the onset of symptoms. This stage lasts from 12 hours to three days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appearance of symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Common symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, and a sore throat arrive up to three days after exposure. Cough, headache, exhaustion, and watery eyes are also common signs that your immune system is fighting off a cold virus. A fever is rare. Symptoms usually peak at three days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Symptoms should start to lessen after three to 10 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recovery:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Symptoms like cough and congestion can linger for two weeks but are less severe than in the first few days. Or sneeze into your upper shirt sleeve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Practice good hand hygiene. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means proper handwashing after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. \u201cWash hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water or with an alcohol-based hand rub,\u201d says Dr. Liu. \u201cWhen possible, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, especially with unwashed hands.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Disinfect surfaces. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially important for high-touch surfaces like doorknobs or elevator buttons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wear a mask. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/collections\/books-by-neil-schachter-md-880000054451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that wearing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cold-and-flu-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical-grade mask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can prevent cold and flu transmission. Before the onset of COVID-19, Dr. Schacter found it harder to convince patients to wear masks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince this deadly virus appeared, people are more comfortable with wearing masks and carrying around a small bottle of hand sanitizer,\u201d says Dr. Schacter. \u201cAs an interesting point, when we all started using these two tools, the number of cases of both colds and flu dropped sharply\u2014a sign of how well they worked to protect against respiratory viruses.\u201d In other words, these steps can also help prevent other infectious diseases that spread this time of year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-is-the-flu-contagious\/\"><b>How long is the flu contagious?<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-and-flu\/\"><b>COVID vs. the flu vs. a cold<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-a-cold\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat a cold<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no proven cure for the common cold. However, there are ways to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/common-cold-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alleviate cold symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. First, you get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. The formulation you need will vary depending on your symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common ingredients in cold medications include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decongestants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenylephrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenylephrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pseudoephedrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pseudoephedrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxymetazoline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxymetazoline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) shrink blood vessels in the nose to relieve sinus pressure and stuffy noses. However, they can raise blood pressure, so discuss these medications with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cough suppressants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dextromethorphan-hbr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dextromethorphan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) ease the constant feeling of needing to cough.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Expectorants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/guaifenesin-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guaifenesin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) thin mucus and make it easier to expel from your body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pain and fever relievers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-extra-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) suppress the inflammatory compounds your immune system releases to fight a cold virus. This class of drugs prevents their production to ease body aches and headaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny of these therapies may be utilized to reduce the severity of the common cold symptom,\u201d says Dr. Liu. However, it\u2019s important to note that cold medicines will often contain a combination of these ingredients, so be sure to read labels carefully. \u201cTo prevent any risk for medication errors, it is best to consult with a pharmacist on these therapies, especially when administering any of these medications to children younger than six years old, if you are taking multiple prescription medications, or if you have any existing medical conditions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, none of the aforementioned therapies are known to cure or shorten the length of the common cold compared with not utilizing any of them,\u201d says Dr. Liu. \u201cNevertheless, by utilizing therapies and precautionary measures, you will be better able to withstand the severity of the common cold, and protect those around you from contracting this common condition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given how likely it is that most people will catch at least one cold in the next year, it might be a smart idea to discuss the best decongestants, cough suppressants, and pain relievers with a pharmacist and, ideally, keep some remedies on hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a cold.\u201d That\u2019s a sentence many people use to explain why their symptoms are nothing serious, nothing anyone needs to worry about.
