No matter what\u2019s sent you in search of a Saxenda alternative, there are several viable options.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-i-take-instead-of-saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take instead of Saxenda?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hadn\u2019t approved many medications specifically for weight loss, but the list has started to expand in recent years. The most direct comparisons to Saxenda are other GLP-1 agonists, which can treat obesity and Type 2 diabetes by helping patients control their blood sugar. And that\u2019s because it could be more effective. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Saxenda and Zepbound both mimic the GLP-1 hormone, which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Zepbound is classified as a dual GIP\/GLP-1 agonist. It also mimics another hormone called GIP, which influences insulin secretion and lipid metabolism\u2014so it might outperform GLP-1 drugs. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investor.lilly.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/lillys-zepboundr-tirzepatide-superior-wegovyr-semaglutide-head\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 72-week study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that tirzepatide patients lost 20.2% of their body weight, while those taking semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) only lost 13.7%. Additionally, Zepbound lasts longer in the body than Saxenda, so instead of a once-daily dose, it only requires one injection per week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-wegovy-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Wegovy (semaglutide)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/saxenda-vs-wegovy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy might have a different active ingredient than Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but as another GLP-1 drug, it functions similarly. Both drugs influence gastric emptying and blood sugar, and both can cause similar gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, and constipation. However, while Saxenda is a once-daily injection, Wegovy is once weekly, so it might appeal to people who prefer fewer doses. Qsymia (phentermine\u2013topiramate)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jenbrownmd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Brown, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical and health writer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myobesityteam.com\/writers\/682653ee1552ca622a3ea54b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyObesityTeam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe most effective prescription weight loss medication, outside of GLP-1s, is Qsymia.\u201d It\u2019s a combination of a stimulant (phentermine) and an anticonvulsant (topiramate) that can reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue is that it can be harder to get than Saxenda.\u00a0 \u201cThe phentermine component is a controlled substance, making it a little more challenging to prescribe,\u201d Dr. Brown says. It is also only available through a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program, in which pharmacies must be certified to dispense the medication. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/qsymia-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Qsymia side effects <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include dry mouth, constipation, paresthesia (abnormal skin sensation), depression, and tachycardia (increased heart rate). Because it can affect the heart, healthcare providers may advise against it if you have a cardiovascular condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-contrave-naltrexone-bupropion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Together, naltrexone\u2019s influence on the brain\u2019s reward system and bupropion\u2019s effect on dopamine and norepinephrine may help reduce appetite and cravings. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/contravehcp.com\/efficacy\/cor-bmod-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients taking Contrave lost an average of 8.1% body weight after 56 weeks, compared to 4.9% with a placebo (inactive treatment).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Saxenda, Contrave carries warnings for an increased heart rate and blood pressure, as well as seizures and liver damage. Plus, due to the bupropion component of Contrave, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2014\/200063s000lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the FDA issued a black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors\u2014although this warning applies to all antidepressants. That said, under the care and supervision of a healthcare provider, it can still be a safe and effective treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-adipex-p-phentermine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Adipex-P is an oral medication, so it\u2019s easier to take than Saxenda, and it\u2019s often cheaper too, especially when you use the generic form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phentermine is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/controlled-substances-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is only FDA-approved as a short-term treatment (several weeks)\u2014although some healthcare providers may prescribe it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for longer. And as an oral medication\u2014taken three times per day\u2014could be preferable to people who don\u2019t like injections. Like Saxenda, its most common side effects are gastrointestinal and include nausea and vomiting.
