Years ago, if you had an existing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health condition,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it was possible for an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to exclude it from coverage. Fortunately, for most insurance options this practice was made illegal by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/affordable-care-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affordable Care Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing health condition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can\u2019t be denied coverage by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage Plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Medicare Supplement plans (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigaps<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can still deny coverage or have pre-existing clauses, which could delay enrollment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pre-existing-conditions-and-medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare cover<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare doesn\u2019t place any limitations or conditions on people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is consistent across all four parts of Medicare. Regardless of whether you decide to enroll in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare Part A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or a Medicare Part C all-in-one plan, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not affect your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligibility<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s covered<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Medicare beneficiaries suffer from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/chronic-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that require specialized treatment. Since Medicare can\u2019t deny coverage or exclude <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these beneficiaries can typically access the treatment they need. However, some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have multiple treatment options and some treatment options may not be covered by Medicare or may require <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prior-authorization\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prior authorization.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For treatments to be covered by Medicare, they can\u2019t be considered experimental, and must be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/fda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved by the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s not covered<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above Medicare will treat and cover <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, enrolling in a Medicare Supplement Plan as secondary coverage is another story. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> require underwriting in many cases and will deny or delay coverage for certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could typically decline are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal Cancer &#8211; Some carriers will accept you if you\u2019ve been cancer-free for more than two years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with complications &#8211; Some carriers will decline insulin usage, and others will decline if you have additional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as heart complications or neuropathy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artirial fibrillation (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/atrial-fibrillation-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AFIB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart failure<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have different underwriting processes and requirements. Some are more lenient on what they will approve than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some will approve you, but if you have a gap in coverage, they could exclude pre-existing health conditions for a period of time. This will vary from company to company. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mutualofomaha.com\/medicare-solutions\/questions\/what-if-i-have-a-pre-existing-condition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mutual of Omaha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2018t restrict pre-existing clauses once you\u2018re approved for coverage. If you have had continuous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creditable coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the pre-existing clauses will not apply.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-medicare-deny-pre-existing-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Medicare deny <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not allowed to deny coverage for any pre-existing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you feel like Medicare has denied you coverage based on a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing condition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can file an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/claims-appeals\/how-do-i-file-an-appeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or reconsideration. The process is outlined on Medicare\u2019s website <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medicare.gov<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medigaps-and-pre-existing-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare Supplemental insurance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cover <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Supplemental insurance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a secondary wrap-around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coverage option<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/medicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These plans require that you are first enrolled in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because you must have Medicare insurance to enroll in these plans, they\u2019re allowed to require <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical underwriting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a condition of purchasing a policy. Medicare Supplements can deny coverage and place restrictions on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The policies will vary depending on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you are applying for an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re not always subject to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical underwriting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing condition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clauses. There are times when you can enroll in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and these don\u2019t apply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re turning 65 or your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is starting, you\u2019re afforded an Open Enrollment Period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During this time you can enroll in any plan offered by any company without the need for underwriting or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing condition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this period is over you\u2019ll be subject to these items if you were to change plans. There are some exceptions. There are seven guaranteed issue situations that could apply depending on your life situation. Some states also have additional <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guaranteed issue rights<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and open enrollment rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, if you have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you want to enroll in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Supplement insurance policy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should do it during your Initial Enrollment Period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"part-c-and-pre-existing-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Advantage cover <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are another way to receive your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benefits. These private plans are sometimes referred to as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-medicare-advantage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are required to accept you and cover all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covered by Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should never affect your enrolling or changing to another <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"waiting-period\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the usual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waiting period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under Medicare?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-existing condition waiting periods<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2018t apply to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage Plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescription coverage. If enrolling in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Supplement insurance plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most carriers will have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six-month<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waiting period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As mentioned above this will vary from company to company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waiting periods<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2018t apply during the guaranteed issue and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open enrollment periods<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You should look at the company plan materials for information on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waiting period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-choose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to choose the best Medicare plan for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best plan is a relative term because all Medicare beneficiaries have different needs. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Parts A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and B, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do not matter. Your coverage is guaranteed and without restrictions based on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The same goes for Medicare Advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have chronic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or pre-existing health concerns you\u2019ll probably want to steer more toward a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has no cap on beneficiary out-of-pocket expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can check the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your area to see if they have a chronic needs plan that is designed for your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health condition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These types of Medicare Part C plans can have additional coverage available catered to your health needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Supplements are a great option if you think you will need to see <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers often. While they can be more expensive than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they have the most comprehensive coverage for your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needs. Remember you do have to pass <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical underwriting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to enroll in these plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement if you have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-existing conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when you are first eligible for Medicare during your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medigap Open Enrollment Period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
