It\u2019s also used to reduce chest pain (stable angina) in those with coronary heart disease. Amlodipine and its brand-name versions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/norvasc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norvasc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/katerzia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katerzia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They relax and widen blood vessels, allowing them to lower blood pressure and lower the incidence of chest pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/amlodipine-without-insurance\/\">Amlodipine<\/a> is sometimes combined into a single tablet with other blood pressure or cholesterol drugs, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atorvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atorvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Amlodipine\u2019s side effects are relatively mild and most people won\u2019t have problems taking it. When they do, there are ways to prevent or manage adverse effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-amlodipine-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of amlodipine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By far, amlodipine\u2019s most common side effect is swelling of the hands, feet, and lower legs (peripheral edema), affecting about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Norvasc-amlodipine-besylate-1853.3578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in three<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients. Another one in seven people will experience swelling elsewhere. Most other common side effects do not occur as frequently as swelling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/105205\/amlodipine\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the extremities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palpitations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flushing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin rash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle cramps<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of amlodipine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most serious side effects of amlodipine are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsening of chest pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart attack (particularly in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=003dd1ec-16f8-4f96-b6a8-c4689d35892a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronary artery disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the pancreas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both weight gain and weight loss have been reported by people taking amlodipine, but the incidence of either side effect is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Norvasc-amlodipine-besylate-1853.3578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than one percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In some cases, weight gain may be associated with fluid retention and swelling. If weight does change unintentionally while taking amlodipine, talk to a healthcare professional, especially if parts of the body are swelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are claims that amlodipine may cause hair loss, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2007\/019787s042lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 0.1%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people taking amlodipine have experienced hair loss. Not only is that remarkably rare, but there is also a possibility that hair loss isn\u2019t related to amlodipine. Keep in mind that amlodipine is frequently combined with other blood pressure medications. Some of these, such as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, can cause hair loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"leg-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg pain is not commonly associated with amlodipine. A small number of people\u2014less than 2%\u2014may experience muscle pain and muscle cramps as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9825082\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of amlodipine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These problems may affect the legs. More commonly, however, people may notice \u201cheavy legs\u201d due to swelling. This can be uncomfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping amlodipine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any drug taken to lower blood pressure, stopping amlodipine will cause blood pressure to rise. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Abstract\/175050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a rebound effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, it will take about a week or more after amlodipine is stopped for blood pressure to reach baseline levels. Of course, baseline (untreated) blood pressure will probably be high, and that\u2019s not good. If amlodipine is causing problems, get medical advice from a healthcare professional before quitting the drug. Another blood pressure medication may be required to keep blood pressure at healthy levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do amlodipine side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many side effects can appear shortly after treatment starts, including fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. Some side effects, such as flushing, itching, or swelling, could come on rapidly after the first dose. Other side effects, such as swelling of the extremities, are delayed and happen later in treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do amlodipine side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of amlodipine\u2019s mild side effects will get better as the body adjusts to the medicine, though some may not. If the side effects are caused by the drug, they should improve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=003dd1ec-16f8-4f96-b6a8-c4689d35892a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within a day or so<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of discontinuing it. However, some adverse effects, such as severe allergic reactions, may take a few days to get better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of amlodipine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine does not have side effects associated with long-term treatment. In fact, most people take amlodipine for months or years. Amlodipine also does not have side effects that persist for weeks or months after the drug has been stopped. The greatest risks involve the heart: heart problems caused or worsened by amlodipine, including heart attack, may have long-term and even lifelong consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201ccontraindication\u201d is any physical condition that makes a drug too risky to take. For amlodipine, the FDA states that amlodipine is only contraindicated in people who are allergic to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine is not contraindicated at any stage of pregnancy, but there isn\u2019t enough research to know if it\u2019s safe to take. Based on animal studies, there is no evidence that it causes birth defects or other problems, but it may increase the risk of fetal death. As with many drugs, the FDA recommends that the prescriber and mother carefully weigh the benefits and risks when making a treatment decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK500665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for breastfeeding mothers. Although amlodipine does pass into breast milk, it does so in low amounts. Amlodipine levels are undetectable in nursing babies and no problems have been reported to date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA considers amlodipine to be safe and effective in children between the ages of 6 and 17 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no evidence that amlodipine behaves differently in seniors than in younger adults. Though not prohibited, amlodipine is usually started at lower doses for people of advanced age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine has relatively few and mild side effects, so there aren\u2019t many cautions or warnings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other prescription drugs, amlodipine can worsen certain medical conditions. It\u2019s not contraindicated for those conditions, but healthcare providers will watch carefully to make sure they don\u2019t get worse. These conditions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe coronary artery disease (CAD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narrowing of a heart valve (aortic stenosis)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, people with liver disease have a greater risk of side effects when using amlodipine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine is not associated with recreational use or abuse. It is not known to cause physical dependence or withdrawal symptoms when discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum daily dose of amlodipine is 10 mg. An overdose of amlodipine could cause seriously low blood pressure and rapid heart rate. Call a poison control center or visit an emergency room when an overdose is suspected. Look for signs of an overdose, such as redness or warmth in the feet, lower legs, hands, and face. Fast heartbeats and fainting are signs that blood pressure is getting too low.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recalls<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine recalls <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/drug-recalls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are limited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to individual manufacturers who have had quality problems with amlodipine combination drugs. These recalls have been rare and temporary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amlodipine interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a comparatively mild prescription drug, amlodipine only has a few drug interactions that may cause problems. Most drug interactions involve amlodipine affecting the body\u2019s metabolism of other drugs or vice versa. Some drugs slow down the body\u2019s breakdown of amlodipine, making side effects more likely. Some drugs speed up that process, making amlodipine less effective. On the other hand, amlodipine can slow down the metabolism of some other drugs, making side effects from those drugs more likely. None of these drugs are prohibited, but doses may need adjustment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the effect isn\u2019t great, there\u2019s an increased risk of side effects when amlodipine is taken with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrolide antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clarithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/erythromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erythromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioids<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune suppressants such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tacrolimus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tacrolimus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclosporine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclosporine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some antiviral drugs (including most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and hepatitis C antiviral medications)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antifungals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antifungal medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ketoconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketoconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/itraconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itraconazole<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticonvulsants<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/st-johns-wort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit or grapefruit juice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simvastatin will be limited to 20 mg per day in people taking amlodipine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, amlodipine can increase the risk of heart problems when combined with medications that treat irregular heartbeats or other calcium channel blockers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diltiazem-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diltiazem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/verapamil-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that some drugs lower blood pressure and some raise blood pressure.
