anaphylaxis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"weight-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight changes are commonly experienced by people taking bupropion, but weight loss is far more common than weight gain. Research has shown that about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Wellbutrin-SR-bupropion-hydrochloride-238\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% to 23%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people taking bupropion will lose weight. Loss of appetite is a related side effect: about 1% to 18% of patients experience some appetite loss. It\u2019s not a surprise, then, that bupropion is often prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help people lose weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sexual-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual dysfunction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bupropion, like other antidepressants, can decrease sexual desire. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e4100232-a25d-4468-9057-af7e66205154\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 3% of patients taking bupropion experienced some loss of libido. Another 3% had problems with impotence. However, bupropion is less likely to cause sexual dysfunction than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In fact, some clinicians may prescribe it as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9541153\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an alternative antidepressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to people experiencing sexual dysfunction caused by SSRIs. As with any drug, get medical advice if sexual function becomes a problem while taking bupropion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping is one of the most common side effects of bupropion. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1163271\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that 11% to 20% of people taking bupropion experience insomnia compared to about 4% to 7% who have been given a placebo. This number is comparable to those who experience insomnia while taking SSRIs, which is 10% to 19%. People on bupropion can reasonably expect to have problems sleeping. If insomnia is experienced, make sure to report it to the prescribing healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seizure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though rare, seizures are a common enough problem that bupropion is never given to people with a history of seizures, anorexia, bulimia, or drug or alcohol abuse. The risk of seizures is less than one percent, but it increases with the dosage and has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pink.pharmaintelligence.informa.com\/PS015845\/BURROUGHS-WELLCOME-TO-RELAUNCH-ANTIDEPRESSANT-WELLBUTRIN-IN-MIDJULY-AFTER-ABORTED-LAUNCH-IN-1986-FDAAPPROVED-LABELING-INCLUDES-DATA-ON-SEIZURE-RISK\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the seizure rate of other antidepressants. If seizures are experienced when taking bupropion, immediately talk to a healthcare professional. Bupropion will need to be discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss is only an infrequent side effect of bupropion. Less than 1% of people taking bupropion will experience hair loss side effects, and they usually only manifest after taking the drug for a while. While this is a rare side effect, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/intclinpsychopharm\/Abstract\/2018\/01000\/Risk_of_hair_loss_with_different_antidepressants_.4.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that hair loss is more likely when taking bupropion than other antidepressants. In the event of hair thinning, the prescribing healthcare provider might prescribe an antidepressant that is less likely to cause hair loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-bupropion-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do bupropion side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many common side effects, including agitation, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, nausea, and shaking, can appear fairly early, after one or a few days of bupropion treatment. Allergic reactions, including severe allergic reactions, could occur rapidly, even after a single dose. Others may take a few weeks or months of treatment to become apparent, including weight loss, appetite loss, constipation, sexual dysfunction, and hair loss. Most severe side effects are also delayed, particularly seizures, suicidal thoughts, and many heart problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-bupropion-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do bupropion side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects of bupropion usually resolve within a few days of the last dose. Bupropion has a half-life of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Bupropion#section=Biological-Half-Life\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a single dose and 21 hours when taken continuously, so its effects on the body can last for three to four days. If seizures are experienced, they usually stop when bupropion is discontinued. However, once a drug like bupropion causes seizures, other types of drugs that increase seizure risk may not be used in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bupropion-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bupropion contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the risk for seizures, bupropion is never prescribed to people with certain past or current medical conditions. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anorexia or bulimia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who is currently quitting excessive use of alcohol or being taken off benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or anticonvulsants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with allergies to bupropion or any of the medicine&#8217;s inactive ingredients cannot safely take bupropion or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wellbutrin-xl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy-and-nursing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and nursing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bupropion has not been shown to cause birth defects, miscarriage, or other problems when taken during pregnancy. It is uncertain if bupropion causes problems in nursing babies. It is always best to speak to a healthcare provider to weigh the risks and benefits of taking bupropion while pregnant or nursing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of bupropion for anyone under the age of 18 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bupropion-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bupropion warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All medications that target brain activity can cause problems. Bupropion is no exception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"black-box-warning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black box warning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has mandated that bupropion and Wellbutrin carry a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the increased risk for suicidal behaviors and thoughts in young adults and adolescents using bupropion. This warning does not apply to older adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some health conditions may get worse or make serious side effects more likely in people taking bupropion, so treatment will require more careful monitoring. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conditions that increase the risk of seizures, including stroke, head injury, brain or spinal infections, arteriovenous malformation, diabetes, or drug abuse\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychiatric disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent heart attack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncorrected narrow angles or a history of angle-closure glaucoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tourette\u2019s syndrome or other tic disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"abuse-and-dependence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA does not consider bupropion to be a drug that can cause physical dependence or abuse, but it is known as a street drug. Though it doesn\u2019t cause physical dependence, people may become psychologically addicted to the drug. Abusing bupropion by snorting, injecting, or overdosing can cause serious problems, particularly seizures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"overdose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking too much bupropion can cause serious problems. The most worrisome risks of overdose are seizures, convulsions, coma, respiratory failure, and death. Immediate emergency medical care is required if an overdose is suspected.
