These statistics are very close, so it\u2019s uncertain what role tamsulosin plays in chest pain. However, tamsulosin, like other alpha blockers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/databankws.lareb.nl\/Downloads\/kwb_2006_1_tamsu.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does widen blood vessels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which reduces blood pressure and causes the heart to beat faster. As with any drug, if chest tightness or pain is experienced while taking tamsulosin, tell the prescribing healthcare provider about the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tamsulosin-side-effects-in-older-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsulosin side effects in older adults<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials, no differences were observed in safety or effectiveness based on age. It takes the body approximately 14 hours\u2014give or take a few hours\u2014to eliminate half of a dose of tamsulosin. So people can expect to be free of tamsulosin in a couple of days after taking the last dose. And when tamsulosin is stopped, side effects like problems with ejaculation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10473995\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resolve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-tamsulosin-safe-for-long-term-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is tamsulosin safe for long-term use?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of tamsulosin\u2019s side effects are temporary. They either get better as the body adapts to the drug or go away when the medication is stopped. A few may cause long-term problems, such as severe skin reactions, falls that occur because of low blood pressure, or damage to the penis from priapism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-tamsulosin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take tamsulosin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsulosin is never prescribed to people who are allergic to the drug or its inactive ingredients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsulosin is indicated to treat BPH. However, it is sometimes also used in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/75402\/tamsulosin\/Peds-Dosing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Flomax-tamsulosin-hydrochloride-2893\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help expel small kidney stones. It is unknown if tamsulosin is safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because tamsulosin may cause dizziness or faintness when standing up, older patients are monitored more closely to prevent falls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tamsulosin-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsulosin warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All prescription drugs have risks. Fortunately, tamsulosin is a relatively mild drug in terms of side effects. Although it can cause problems, the most severe problems are rare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of tamsulosin\u2019s risks are related to pre-existing health conditions. Sometimes these conditions are made worse by the drug. In other cases, side effects are more likely to be severe or intolerable. Healthcare providers are cautious when prescribing tamsulosin to people who:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are allergic to sulfa drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a specific liver enzyme that is not good at breaking down tamsulosin (poor CYP2D6 metabolizers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feel faint or dizzy when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are about to have glaucoma or cataract surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For eye surgery, tamsulosin can cause a condition called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, which makes it difficult to dilate the pupil before the operation. This problem isn\u2019t life-threatening, but it does make it difficult for the surgeon to work on the eye. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3783304\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of floppy iris syndrome are due to tamsulosin treatment. The solution is to temporarily discontinue tamsulosin before surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"abuse-and-dependence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA does not classify tamsulosin as a drug that might be abused or that results in physical dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"overdose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event of an overdose, get emergency medical help. Low blood pressure and racing heartbeats are the most serious problems, so medical assistance will be needed to bring these back to normal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tamsulosin-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamsulosin interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most drug interactions with tamsulosin occur with drugs that block the body\u2019s ability to break down tamsulosin or medicines that aren\u2019t broken down well when combined with tamsulosin. Both cases increase the likelihood of side effects.
