In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/any-anxiety-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31.1%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of adults in the United States will experience an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. To treat anxiety disorders, doctors may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, such as a benzodiazepine, or an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tricyclic-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Sometimes, a combination of medications may be prescribed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.express-scripts.com\/corporate\/node\/2332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Express Scripts State of Mind Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 11.1% of the population was taking an antidepressant in 2019, and 4.9% were taking anti-anxiety medication. And almost 50% of individuals taking an anti-anxiety medication also took an antidepressant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, the pain medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tramadol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prescribed to manage symptoms of anxiety. As an opioid, the drug works with opioid receptors in the brain to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naabt.org\/faq_answers.cfm?ID=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release dopamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a chemical that can make you feel relaxed. But does tramadol help with anxiety? Here\u2019s what you need to know about tramadol for anxiet<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is tramadol (Ultram)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors who prescribe tramadol for anxiety are using the drug off-label. That means the drug is approved by the FDA for something other than what it\u2019s being prescribed to treat. In this case, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tramadol-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an opioid medication that is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/tramadol-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-wendi-d-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wendi D Jones, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pharmacist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aspenrxhealth.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AspenRx Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, off-label tramadol is used for the temporary treatment of premature <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537060\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ejaculation in males, restless leg syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anxiety, and depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But tramadol is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/controlled-substances-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">class IV controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a695011.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">habit-forming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially with prolonged use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our mental health newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Mental Health Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol for anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the pain-relieving effects of tramadol (caused by its action on opioid receptors in the brain and spine), tramadol <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7737323\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibits norepinephrine and serotonin uptake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> similar to some SNRIs, Dr. Jones says. \u201cLow-dose tramadol has been shown to be generally safe, effective, and fast-acting for depression,\u201d Dr. Jones says. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/smw.ch\/article\/doi\/smw.2017.14428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that some patients who are prescribed tramadol experience an improved mood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some physicians might prescribe tramadol for anxiety and depression. The drug works quickly, and patients using tramadol for anxiety or depression often feel better with the first dose, Dr. Jones says. Although onset and duration are not well documented when it comes to anxiety and depression symptom relief, Dr. Jones says that tramadol is rapidly absorbed, with peak concentration occurring within two to three hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPain relief is usually experienced within one hour of taking the medication and can last four to six hours after a single dose,\u201d Dr. Jones says. \u201cCase studies for anxiety indicate relief for multiple hours following a single low dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is a chance of dependency with the drug when used for more than short-term use, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joshua-flatow-321037160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joshua Flatow, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical director and chief psychiatrist at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificmindhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Mind Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Long Beach, California. For this reason, some physicians may be hesitant to prescribe tramadol for anxiety alone. It may be best used for patients with concurrent anxiety and pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best option to treat anxiety depends on the patient, Dr. Flatow says. That\u2019s because an individual\u2019s medical history and comorbidities come into play. But as much as possible, Dr. Flatow advises his patients to do therapies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4610618\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a research-backed anxiety treatment, along with any medication they are prescribed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following are some common side effects of tramadol:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartburn and indigestion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More serious side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased suicide risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory depression\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that tramadol can increase the risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Jones says. This occurs when multiple medicines affect the serotonin reuptake receptors, causing a marked increase in serotonin in the body, she explains. \u201cSymptoms include shivering, diarrhea, restlessness, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, muscle rigidity, sweating, hallucinations, and more,\u201d Dr. Jones says, adding that serotonin syndrome is a medical emergency that can progress to high fever, unconsciousness, coma, and death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because there are multiple medications and herbal supplements that can affect your serotonin levels, always be sure to speak with your pharmacist before you start something new, Dr. Jones recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take tramadol for anxiety?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drug is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537060\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contraindicated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in patients with the following characteristics, Dr. Jones says:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitive to opioids or have a history of opioid abuse\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of suicidal behavior or ideation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe asthma or other respiratory diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI obstruction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior patients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children younger than 12<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescents younger than 18 who have had a tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant or breastfeeding women<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, people taking the following medications and supplements may need to avoid tramadol:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as phenelzine, selegiline, and isocarboxazid<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), such as doxepin, amitriptyline, and imipramine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as escitalopram, fluoxetine, and paroxetine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triptans, such as eletriptan, almotriptan, and sumatriptan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, lorazepam, or alprazolam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs with central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects, such as cyclobenzaprine and diphenhydramine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antifungal medications, such as ketoconazole<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antibiotics, such as erythromycin and rifampin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain antiviral drugs, such as ritonavir<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol can also interact with grapefruit juice. Consult with your provider or pharmacist about dietary changes you should make when taking tramadol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol dosages for anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescribers should start with a low dose and make any dosage changes slowly, Dr. Jones says, adding that effective dosages for anxiety\/depression are lower than those needed to treat pain. \u201cTypically, patients begin with 50 mg,\u201d Dr. Jones says. \u201cThe immediate release tablet can be cut in half. If necessary, the prescriber may choose to start lower than 50 mg. It is always recommended to start at the lowest possible dose for the patient and then increase the dose slowly until the patient\u2019s symptoms are well-managed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A patient\u2019s age, weight, and kidney function can affect the dose that\u2019s necessary to manage symptoms, Dr. Jones says, and genetics can strongly affect sensitivity to tramadol. Case studies indicate that the medication works within an hour, lasting up to six hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does tramadol cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic tramadol works the same as the brand-name version, and generic prescriptions come with a lower medication cost. On average, tramadol costs $31 for 30, 50 mg tablets without insurance, while its brand-name counterpart <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ultram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> averages $142 for the same dosage and quantity. The brand-name, extended-release version of tramadol, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/conzip\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conzip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, costs an average of $342 for 30, 100 mg capsules.
