It may go away, but it may cause a lot of damage in the process.\u201d Here\u2019s what you need to know about reducing inflammation in your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"signs-of-inflammation-in-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of inflammation in the body<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it\u2019s important to note that there are actually two main types of inflammation: acute inflammation and chronic inflammation. (Some experts maintain that there is a third stage of inflammation that marks a transition from acute to chronic inflammation, which is known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK556083\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subacute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stage.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of acute inflammation as short-term or immediate inflammation. You experience acute inflammation right after experiencing some sort of damage to your body. When an injury (or a pathogen like a virus) activates your immune system, your body will immediately send inflammatory cells and cytokines to the affected area to help it start healing. For example, if you sprain your ankle, your ankle will probably start to swell. The swelling is a sign of an acute inflammatory response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Cleveland Clinic, common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/21660-inflammation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of acute inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warmth or heat at the affected area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or tenderness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness or flushed skin at the injury site<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, chronic inflammation is the long-term version of inflammation. It develops when the inflammatory response continues even after the external threat has passed. For example, psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder. People with psoriasis develop inflammation in the form of a rash on their skin because of an autoimmune system dysfunction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of chronic inflammation may include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouth sores<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin rash<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common causes of chronic inflammation include exposures to toxins, cancer,\u00a0 untreated acute inflammation, and autoimmune disorders. In fact, the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, veggies, lean sources of protein, whole grains, and olive oil is one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you might want to try.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-avoid-inflammatory-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Processed foods are especially notorious, as are fried foods and foods that contain a lot of refined sugar (aka refined carbohydrates). According to Harvard, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/quick-start-guide-to-an-antiinflammation-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the foods to limit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French fries\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White bread and white pasta<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepackaged cookies and pastries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red meat and processed meats, like hot dogs and sausages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugary beverages like soda<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re struggling to revise your eating habits and replace certain foods with healthier alternatives,consult a registered dietitian for guidance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-consider-a-multivitamin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Consider a multivitamin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not eating a healthy diet, you could be missing out on a lot of nutrients that can help you fight off inflammation. A vitamin supplement can help, but should be considered a temporary solution while you work on improving your diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile taking vitamins is not fundamental, if you don\u2019t consume a diet high in fruits and vegetables, I often recommend it with the goal that you will eventually not need them,\u201d says Peralta. \u201cSynthetic vitamins are not the same, since in fruits and vegetables, you also get other key elements to reduce inflammation, like oxidants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-sip-green-tea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Sip green tea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/another-benefit-of-drinking-green-tea-or-coffee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is known for promoting reduced inflammation levels, among other benefits. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drc.bmj.com\/content\/8\/1\/e001252.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMJ Open Diabetes Research &amp; Care<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that Japanese people with diabetes who drank greater amounts of green tea and coffee enjoyed what the researchers called \u201creduced all-cause mortality.\u201d That is, their hot beverage habits seemed to have some noteworthy health benefits. You can brew up a mug of green tea at home and benefit from those anti-inflammatory effects, or order a cup from a coffee shop when you\u2019re on the go.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-try-turmeric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Try turmeric<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric is a distinctive yellow spice that\u2019s popular in Indian and South Asian cuisine. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the major active ingredient of turmeric, which comes from the root of the curcuma longa plant, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/turmeric-health-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curcumin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s often heralded for its antioxidants and its anti-inflammatory properties. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17101300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that curcumin can help people suffering from ulcerative colitis. That is, if the time you go to bed each night tends to vary wildly, without consistent wake times, you could be putting yourself at risk for inflammation. If you\u2019re not feeling well-rested, or you know your sleep habits could be improved, it might be time to revamp them. \u201cSleep is not just wasted time,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southnassau.org\/sn\/find-a-doctor\/kaplan-stuart-md-464\">Dr. Kaplan<\/a>. \u201cThe body uses that time to regenerate itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-try-bromelain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Try bromelain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever heard of bromelain? No? You are familiar with pineapple, though, and bromelain is a mixture of enzymes found in pineapple. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/bromelain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bromelain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered an effective defense against inflammation from injuries and infections. If you\u2019re interested, consider a bromelain supplement in capsule form, since you can\u2019t get enough from enjoying a few slices of pineapple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, be sure to chat with your healthcare provider before you start taking any supplements. \u201cYou have to be careful, especially if you are taking prescription drugs,\u201d says Dr. Kaplan, noting that some supplements can interact with medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-quit-smoking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Quit smoking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/smoking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cigarette smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is associated with increased levels of inflammation in the body, too. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-76556-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that chronic inflammation is associated with lung cancer. Depending on whether you have a chronic disease that requires medication, you may need ongoing treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help decrease inflammation. Your healthcare provider may suggest lifestyle and dietary changes that are designed to help reduce inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, people can heal from inflammation as long as they continue good lifestyle habits,\u201d says Peralta. \u201cNot smoking, good stress management techniques, less processed foods, more natural foods, and good quality sleep all play critical roles in keeping your inflammation levels low.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inflammation is your body\u2019s response to some type of offense.
