Some people find that certain foods and drinks can either keep a migraine attack at bay or reduce its severity\u2014or, conversely, bring one on. There\u2019s no one migraine prevention diet that can prevent all attacks, but there are diets that may be helpful to people with migraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"plant-based-diets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant-based diets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking to reduce migraines, you may want to cut back on meat and add in more vegetables, especially leafy greens.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4227630\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a low-fat, plant-based diet\u00a0 reduced both the severity and frequency of migraines during a 16-week study.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/content\/14\/12\/e243987\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 showed a single 60-year-old man who had severe migraines for more than a decade benefited greatly from a dietary change. Three months after switching to a Low Inflammatory Foods Everyday (LIFE) diet, his number of \u201cheadache days\u201d went down from from 18-24 a month to zero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diet focuses on nutrient-dense, dark green leafy vegetables and a whole food plant-based diet. The researchers believe that the focus on leafy veggies\u2014like spinach, kale, and watercress\u2014tripled the man\u2019s beta-carotene levels. Beta-carotene is a carotenoid, which is anti-inflammatory and lowers oxidative stress. Systemic inflammation and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2824933\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxidative stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have both been linked to migraines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"keto-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keto diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-keto-diet-work\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketogenic diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was originally used to treat epilepsy, but it may also relieve migraines as well. While more research is required, one early study demonstrated that while migraine frequency or severity wasn\u2019t altered, there was a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8471252\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinically important trend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toward migraine attacks not lasting as long.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4887398\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that after a month of following a keto diet, study participants experienced a reduction in migraine attack frequency and duration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keto diet focuses on high fats, a moderate amount of protein, and extremely low amounts of carbohydrates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"elimination-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elimination diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because migraine triggers differ depending on the individual, a migraine diet that\u2019s successful in reducing attacks or severity for one person might not work for another. Instead of following one specific diet, you can keep track of what you\u2019re eating to discover a pattern between eating specific foods or drinks and getting migraines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKeeping a food diary to help identify personal triggers and, once those triggers are known, working to avoid them, is a very helpful way to identify what diet works best for an individual who has migraines,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dralicewilliams.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice Williams, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a physician based in Las Vegas, Nevada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring your food diary to your next healthcare provider\u2019s appointment, so you can discuss your migraine triggers and how to avoid them. The solution may include an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/elimination-diet\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elimination diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the process of removing food or drink you think might be problematic from your diet for at least a few weeks. During this time, you\u2019ll record on a calendar how you\u2019re feeling daily (like on a scale from 0-10) while marking the dates of migraines and how long they last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the elimination diet is over, you\u2019ll slowly reintroduce the food into your diet. Continue to track how you\u2019re feeling. Mark on the calendar which foods or drinks have been added. Add one new food or drink every week or two to help with tracking consequences. If, upon reintroducing the food, you notice negative changes, you may need to give it up completely. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people say that the nitrites in red wine cause headaches. If you have a migraine, it may be time to swap the wine glass for sparkling water\u2014but not for the reason you think. Alcohol itself is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/12\/181219075841.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the most common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> migraine triggers and can prompt a migraine soon after drinking.\u00a0 This is different from hangover headache pain. It\u2019s still not clear if it\u2019s the alcohol specifically that brings on a migraine or another component in alcoholic beverages, but either way, any boozy beverage\u2014especially dark or bubbly drinks\u2014could leave you hurting the next day in more ways than one. If you decide to imbibe, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinslupus.org\/lupus-info\/lupus-affects-body\/lupus-nervous-system\/migraine-prevention-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vodka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the least likely to cause a migraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could your morning coffee be triggering your migraine? It\u2019s possible. Caffeine is a double-edged sword because drinking it may trigger a migraine, but caffeine withdrawal is even more likely to set off migraines.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7468766\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A review of research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that while it may not be necessary to give up your morning caffeinated coffee entirely, don\u2019t exceed 200 mg of caffeine daily\u2014and be aware that abrupt withdrawal may have repercussions. Meaning, if you drink more than three or four cups a day, you should gradually start reducing your caffeine intake. Excessive caffeine consumption is a known risk factor for developing daily headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-processed-meats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Processed meats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed meats, such as hot dogs, deli meat, or bacon often contain nitrates. These additives are used as preservatives and are another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5080405\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common migraine trigger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People who<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16106903\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get migraines from nitrates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can expect the migraine to come on three to six hours after ingestion. These foods are more likely to trigger a migraine among people who already get migraines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-aged-cheeses-and-fermented-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Aged cheeses and fermented food<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you enjoy dairy products such as cheddar or blue cheese, pickled foods like sauerkraut andfermented soy products like miso or tempeh, you\u2019re eating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC494110\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tyramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a suspected migraine trigger. People who get migraines may not have the right enzymes to break down tyramine, resulting in a migraine. A good rule of thumb is that if the food is aged or fermented, it\u2019s likely to contain tyramine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-aspartame\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Aspartame<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artificial sweetener has been linked to migraines. There\u2019s a correlation between aspartame and headaches and, for those who get migraines, the link is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2708042\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even stronger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most common brand name of aspartame in the U.S. is Equal. Aspartame is also found in sugar-free products like diet soda or ice cream, gelatin, desserts, and more. If you suspect that aspartame affects your migraines, be sure to read the ingredients list of sweets first.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-msg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. MSG<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monosodium glutamate, also called MSG, is an ingredient used to enhance the flavor of vegetables, soups, and other restaurant foods. It might be delicious, but it can have serious consequences for people with migraine. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4870486\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that it\u2019s a potential trigger. If you think it might be contributing to your attacks, avoid fast food, chips and packaged snacks, frozen meals, processed meats, and instant noodles, and always ask your server if the restaurant uses this seasoning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-citrus-fruit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Citrus fruit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start your morning with a glass of orange juice, it\u2019s time to reconsider. Citrus fruits, including oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, and pineapple\u2014along with their juices\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4442763\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are found to be<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a significant common trigger for migraines. They also often contain high levels of tyramine, a substance known to cause headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-gluten\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Gluten<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine prevention diets often recommend avoiding yeast-risen bread products, including any doughnuts, bread, pizza crust, or even croissants. That\u2019s because there\u2019s an association between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33022759\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celiac disease and migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both conditions generally improve on a gluten-free diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-foods-to-prevent-migraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 foods to prevent migraine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, there\u2019s no magic bullet that will prevent migraine headaches, but \u201cvegetables, fresh protein sources, and whole grains should be the foundation of your diet,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advmedny.com\/maria-dolgovina\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Dolgovina, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified neurologist. It\u2019s important not to go for long periods without eating as well, which could induce a migraine. Be sure to add this list of foods to your diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-plenty-of-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Plenty of water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may sound basic, but dehydration is a major migraine trigger, says Dr. Dolgovina. Keeping a water bottle on hand or trying different types of water, like sparkling or flavored, could help meet your liquid quotient for the day. Fatty fish<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans of fatty fish like salmon, tuna, herring, and sardines, rejoice. A diet high in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Omega3FattyAcids-HealthProfessional\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and low in omega-6 acids reduces the number of chronic headaches according to a randomized, single-blinded, parallel-group clinical trial. Other foods that are high in omega-3s include flaxseed oil, walnuts, natto, egg yolks, sardines, flaxseeds, and hemp seeds. It might be due to the anti-inflammatory properties that omega-3s have. Omega-6 foods include a variety of oils, like grapeseed, sunflower, corn, walnuts, sesame, and soybeans. While omega-6 foods are also a necessary part of a person\u2019s diet, the modern Western diet usually skews to a much higher ratio of omega-6 foods to omega-3s.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-ginger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Ginger<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34851560\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inconclusive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that ginger can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> migraines, the root can be used to treat the nausea and vomiting that often come with strong migraine attacks. Try making a tea with fresh ginger root or adding grated ginger to your meals.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ginger-benefits\/\"><b>Health benefits of ginger<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ways-to-prevent-migraines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to prevent migraines<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For such a common disorder, there\u2019s still a lot about migraines that we don\u2019t know. \u201cWhat causes a migraine is not completely understood,\u201d Dr. Williams says. \u201cIt is thought to be a result of signals sent from overactive nerve cells that trigger nerves in the head and face, causing the body to release chemicals that cause swelling in blood vessels in the lining of the brain, which leads to pain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"migraine-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/migraine-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: abortive treatments and preventive treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Abortive treatments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are used at the onset of a migraine to minimize or stop the pain but do not prevent the migraine from returning. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine medicine is offered in pill form, nasal sprays, injectables, rectal suppositories, and melt-in-your-mouth pills.
