Both brand-name and generic anastrozole are used to treat postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, healthcare professionals sometimes prescribe it off-label to prevent breast cancer, treat early breast cancer in men or premenopausal women, or as part of fertility treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole treatment typically lasts many years\u2014as many as 10\u2014to make sure cancer does not return. Called an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/aromatase-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aromatase inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anastrozole blocks an enzyme that converts hormones produced by the adrenal gland into the female hormone estrogen. Because estrogen attaches to hormone receptor-positive cancer cells and induces the tumor to grow, reducing estrogen levels helps fight back the cancer. 400;\">Anastrozole and pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various aches and pains are common side effects of anastrozole treatment. Generalized pain, joint pain, back pain, abdominal pain, breast pain, muscle pain, and bone pain were all reported by participants in clinical trials at rates ranging from 8% to 17%. Now, nearly the same number of people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking anastrozole also had these pain problems, but it is clear that anastrozole and an alternative aromatase inhibitor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/femara\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Femara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/letrozole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letrozole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ff7325d2-3383-4ff9-a187-9350e3538640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can cause pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a side effect. Report any pain to the prescribing healthcare provider especially if the pain if the pain changes dramatically, is severe, unrelenting, or persistent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole and weight gain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain is a reported side effect of anastrozole, but it\u2019s uncertain if the drug is to blame. In clinical trials, participants taking anastrozole for five years reported weight gain at the same rate as people not taking anastrozole. That suggests there may be other reasons for the weight gain. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4127600\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A majority of women do gain weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a breast cancer diagnosis. If appetite increases or body weight goes up unintentionally, then get medical advice from the prescriber or a nutritionist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole and hair loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both hair loss and hair thinning are reported side effects of anastrozole, but the incidence is unknown. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24197658\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that the risk of either hair loss or hair thinning is more than twice as likely in women with breast cancer if they\u2019ve been taking an aromatase inhibitor like anastrozole or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/letrozole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letrozole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for two years or more. The incidence could be as high as 1 in 5 women. When on long-term anastrozole therapy, women should be aware that their hair could get thinner. There are effective treatments for this hair thinning, so get medical advice from a healthcare professional before deciding to stop the drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mood-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole and mood changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression and anxiety are listed as side effects of anastrozole, but clinical trials showed that the incidence was about the same for women taking the drug as for women given an inert placebo. However, it is normal for people diagnosed with cancer and undergoing cancer treatment to feel depressed, anxious, or both. No matter what the cause, depression, anxiety, and other mood disturbances can be helped, so talk to a healthcare professional about treatment options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do anastrozole side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of anastrozole\u2019s side effects can begin in the first few days after starting treatment such as hot flashes, digestive system problems, headache, insomnia, and dry mouth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Arimidex-anastrozole-1717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could happen early in treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some will get better after a few months. Most other side effects like weight gain, various body pains, hair loss, depression, and most severe side effects are delayed side effects that typically manifest weeks, months, or even years after the initiation of treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do anastrozole side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the milder side effects of anastrozole typically improve in the first weeks or months of treatment. Side effects that don\u2019t improve during treatment typically go away once treatment ends. It may take several days or a week after the last dose is taken for these problems to improve, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of anastrozole?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women typically take daily doses of letrozole for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ascopubs.org\/doi\/pdfdirect\/10.1200\/JCO.18.01160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five, seven, or 10 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Such long-term use is associated with some anastrozole side effects such as weight gain, osteoporosis, hair loss, and bone fractures. These are typically the result of years of estrogen suppression.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole is never prescribed to women with a known allergy to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole is not approved for use in women of reproductive age. Fertility treatments are different. Several doses will be taken around the time of ovulation. No further doses are given if a pregnancy occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole is not approved for use in premenopausal women, so there are no studies of the drug in women who are breastfeeding. Because of potential harm to the infant, women should not breastfeed when taking anastrozole.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved anastrozole for use in children or teens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the participants in clinical trials have been older than 65. There are no special concerns about using anastrozole in seniors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of side effects, there aren\u2019t many serious issues concerning anastrozole and other medical conditions, overdosing, or physical dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole can worsen some pre-existing conditions including heart disease related to narrowed arteries, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-cholesterol-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/osteoporosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">osteoporosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole is not associated with abuse or physical dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If too much anastrozole is taken, contact a healthcare provider or poison control center. There are no known symptoms of an anastrozole overdose, and no life-threatening effects have been reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t many problems caused by combining anastrozole with other drugs. However, because anastrozole blocks the synthesis of estrogen, it is never prescribed to women taking estrogens either for birth control or hormone therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, the alternative to aromatase inhibitor treatment is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tamoxifen-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamoxifen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drug that blocks the effects of estrogen. It is sometimes used for several years before anastrozole therapy, but it is never prescribed along with anastrozole. It doesn\u2019t really help and adds on side effects of its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DHEA supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether prescribed by a healthcare provider or purchased over the counter, should be avoided by anyone taking an estrogen inhibitor. These substances are precursor chemicals to testosterone and estrogen and could reduce the effectiveness of estrogen suppression treatments like anastrozole.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid anastrozole side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anastrozole has a large number of possible side effects that have a significant incidence rate. That means side effects can and should be expected when taking anastrozole or other estrogen suppression treatments. But the problems don\u2019t have to be bad or frequent. A few smart moves can help minimize or even prevent some side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Let the prescriber know about all current medical conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In nearly every case, the oncologist prescribing anastrozole has an excellent picture of the person\u2019s current health and medical history. Medical records will have been studied and many imaging and blood tests performed. Still, the prescriber needs to know about all current medical conditions including those that may not be in the medical record.
