Both conditions are associated with low levels of dopamine, a chemical used by the brain to control muscle movements. Ropinirole mimics dopamine, so it\u2019s called a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/dopamine-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine receptor agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a result, people taking ropinirole are better able to control and coordinate their movements. Whether taken as an immediate-release or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ropinirole-hcl-er\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tablet, ropinirole has powerful effects on the nervous system, so most people will experience one or more side effects. More than 1 in 4 people taking ropinirole for Parkinson\u2019s disease will experience either involuntary jerks and twitches, nausea, or dizziness as adverse effects. For people with restless legs syndrome, the most common side effects are nausea and sleepiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects of ropinirole style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"dyskinesia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole and dyskinesia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyskinesia describes the involuntary twitches, jerks, and movements many people associate with Parkinson\u2019s disease. They are not, however, a symptom of Parkinson\u2019s. Instead, they are a long-term side effect of years of treatment with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levodopa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levodopa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or dopamine agonists like ropinirole. In clinical trials, 34% of people taking immediate-release ropinirole and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=2e01dbdd-f439-45d7-9085-2d92a1a1fee2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those taking extended-release tablets experienced dyskinesia. However, the incidence is closely related to how advanced the condition is and how long people have been taking Parkinson\u2019s drugs. Many people prescribed ropinirole have already been taking drugs that also cause dyskinesia like levodopa for years. Unfortunately, dyskinesia is part of living with Parkinson\u2019s for many people that have Parkinson\u2019s. If twitching or grimacing becomes a problem, talk to the prescribing healthcare provider. Parkinson\u2019s specialists are very well-trained in handling dyskinesia and will probably <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkinson.org\/understanding-parkinsons\/symptoms\/movement-symptoms\/dyskinesia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modify the dose, modify other drugs being given,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or prescribe an antidyskinetic medication like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amantadine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amantadine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sleep-attacks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole and sleep attacks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6183021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people taking a dopamine agonist like ropinirole may experience sudden sleep attacks, that is, falling asleep while engaged in daily activities. These sleep attacks resemble those experienced by people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/narcolepsy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narcolepsy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can happen when talking or driving a car. They are not always preceded by drowsiness but have been experienced by people who are wide awake and alert. Sleep attacks are more likely to happen in people with Parkinson\u2019s than with restless leg syndrome, but in both groups, the incidence is unrelated to age, duration of treatment, or the severity of the condition being treated. However, the incidence of sleep attacks is related to the type of drug being taken. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pramipexole-dihydrochloride\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pramipexole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the worst offender, is twice as likely to cause sleep attacks as ropinirole. The highest incidence rate, however, is among people taking a dopamine agonist and levodopa. A sleep attack is a serious side effect and could be life-threatening in some situations. Immediately report a sleep attack to the prescribing healthcare provider. The drug may need to be discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do ropinirole side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of ropinirole\u2019s side effects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Requip-ropinirole-220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">begin early in treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea, dizziness, headache, fainting, sleep disturbances, elevated blood pressure, and digestive system complaints. Some severe mental problems such as confusion and hallucinations can also happen early. Severe and moderate side effects tend to happen late in treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do ropinirole side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many mild side effects tend to improve over time as the body adapts to the drug. If they don\u2019t, they are usually reversible if the drug is stopped. Stopping ropinirole, however, is no guarantee that adverse effects will stop, too. Most people taking ropinirole for Parkinson\u2019s will be placed on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ropinirole-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternative medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that also increase dopamine in the brain, either a different dopamine agonist, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/comt-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COMT inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carbidopa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbidopa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or levodopa. These drugs have side effects very similar to ropinirole including dizziness, sleepiness, dyskinesia, hallucinations, confusion, and orthostatic hypotension. Side effects may improve by switching drugs, or they may get worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of ropinirole?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyskinesia is a long-term consequence of taking drugs that significantly raise dopamine levels. All major Parkinson\u2019s disease treatments and most RLS drugs raise dopamine and cause dyskinesia after months or years of treatment. When starting a new Parkinson\u2019s disease medication, how soon dyskinesia occurs will depend on how long a person has had Parkinson\u2019s and how long they\u2019ve been treated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole is never prescribed to anyone with a known allergy to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safety of ropinirole during pregnancy has not been studied. Ropinirole can cause defects and developmental problems in animal fetuses. It is up to the woman and her prescriber to weigh the risks and benefits of taking ropinirole when pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of ropinirole in breast milk or its safety in breastfeeding women has not been studied. Theoretically, ropinirole could reduce breast milk production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole is not FDA approved for use in children or teens younger than 18. However, healthcare professionals may prescribe it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat children and adolescents for restless legs syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because people older than 65 tend to eliminate ropinirole from the body more slowly than younger adults, healthcare professionals are advised to use lower doses. Seniors on ropinirole are also more likely to experience hallucinations than younger adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ropinirole is a powerful medicine that has strong effects on the nervous system. As such, there are bound to be problems with particular issues such as pre-existing conditions, overdose, or withdrawal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of ropinirole can worsen some medical conditions. Fortunately, there are only a few:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with heart problems or low blood pressure may be more vulnerable to orthostatic hypotension and fainting when taking ropinirole<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with severe kidney disease will be given a reduced dose to prevent side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with liver disease may require smaller doses to prevent side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a history of psychosis are more likely to experience psychiatric side effects when taking ropinirole<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with sleep disorders such as narcolepsy may be more likely to experience sleep attacks during ropinirole treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug abuse and physical dependence are not considered a risk with ropinirole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abrupt discontinuation of ropinirole, the sudden decrease to a low dose, or a sudden switch to a different drug could cause withdrawal symptoms similar to a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome, or NMS, a potentially life-threatening reaction to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotic medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Symptoms include fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion. Other withdrawal effects are also possible including low energy, depression, apathy, anxiety, and sleeplessness. Because of withdrawal effects, a healthcare provider will gradually reduce the ropinirole dose when the drug needs to be discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call a poison control center or go to an emergency room if too much ropinirole is taken. The maximum dosage is 18 mg per day. For the most part, the symptoms of an overdose will involve common side effects of ropinirole, but they may be worse. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hallucinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerking and twitching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racing heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive system problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthostatic hypotension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recalls<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ropinirole has not been recalled, brand-name Requip and Requip XL have been discontinued.
