But just five minutes into your workout, you notice that your chest is feeling tight. You might even experience some coughing and wheezing. This is the kind of experience that can happen to people who have exercise-induced asthma. (Yes, even athletes.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise-induced asthma is the appearance of asthma symptoms that are triggered by strenuous exercise. Here\u2019s what to know about living with this condition\u2014and managing it so you can keep on sweating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is exercise-induced asthma?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a chronic condition that affects your lungs. When you experience an asthma attack, the muscles around your airways tighten up, which restricts the flow of air. Additionally, the lining of your airways becomes swollen and inflamed, which also affects airflow. Your lungs may also produce more mucus, which can clog airways, making it harder to breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise-induced asthma is the term used for the narrowing of the airways that occurs when you exercise. Many experts now prefer the term \u201cexercise-induced bronchoconstriction\u201d or EIB because they feel it\u2019s a more accurate term. Exercise triggers the narrowing of the bronchi, or airways, which triggers symptoms, but<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/exercise-induced-asthma\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise isn\u2019t the root cause of the asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology (ACAAi), not everyone who has exercise-induced bronchoconstriction has asthma, but as many as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafa.org\/exercise-induced-asthma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people with asthma also have exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. If you only develop symptoms when you exercise, you might have isolated exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Exercise-induced asthma symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does it feel like to experience an exercise-induced asthma attack? It\u2019s very similar to an asthma exacerbation that isn\u2019t caused by physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of exercise-induced asthma include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest tightness or pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue during exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may wonder how long after you begin exercising that you\u2019ll start to develop symptoms. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty fast,\u201d says Mandy DeVries, the director of education at the\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/IKRbCmZgXlCjymEptOMRyU?domain=aarc.org\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">American Association for Respiratory Care<\/a> (AARC)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Usually symptoms will start within five to 10 minutes. The symptoms can last as long as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/asthma\/types-of-asthma\/exercise-induced-bronchoconstriction-eib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 minutes after you finish your workout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the ACAAI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not unheard of for people to confuse exercise-induced asthma with a simple lack of conditioning. People who are out of shape might feel some chest tightness or shortness of breath after a few minutes of vigorous exercise, and those symptoms are very similar to those of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. But the symptoms are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/asthma\/types-of-asthma\/exercise-induced-bronchoconstriction-eib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more severe in someone who has EIB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What causes exercise-induced asthma?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have EIB, your airways will narrow in reaction to the physical activity, according to the ACAAI. That\u2019s when you experience those symptoms like chest tightness and shortness of breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does it happen? Normally, when you inhale air through your nose, that air travels through your nasal mucosa, which warms and moisturizes the air, preparing it for the airways in your lungs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when you exercise, you may be breathing harder and faster, and that may not give your nasal mucosa a chance to warm and hydrate that air. The drier-than-usual air can be irritating to your lower airways. \u201cThat can also cause you to have spasming of the airways,\u201d adds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southnassau.org\/sn\/find-a-doctor\/coletta-frank-md-chief-critical-care-associate-dir-185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Coletta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chief of critical care medicine and the associate director of the Center for Sleep Medicine with Mount Sinai South Nassau in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What to do if you have an asthma attack while exercising<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start to cough or wheeze a few minutes into your workout, don\u2019t press on. \u201cIf somebody is having symptoms, they need to stop or at least walk, rather than continuing doing hard exercise,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.uncg.edu\/about\/faculty-directory\/colleen-mcgovern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colleen McGovern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ph.D., MPH, RN, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\u2019s School of Nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also use your short-acting or quick-relief inhaler, also known as a rapid-acting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/bronchodilators\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bronchodilator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Short-acting beta 2-agonists, or SABAs, work quickly to open up your airways. In fact, they can take effect in as little as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/17575-bronchodilator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15-20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> minutes, and the effects can last four to six hours, according to the Cleveland Clinic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stop and use your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-inhalers-price-list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhaler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and your symptoms subside, you may be able to resume your activity in a little while. Dr. Coletta suggests waiting 15 minutes or so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf someone is having symptoms every day when they are exercising, that is a problem,\u201d McGovern says. \u201cThey need medical care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to prevent exercise-induced asthma<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now for some good news. You can still exercise if you have exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. In fact, you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exercise because regular exercise provides so many benefits for your body and brain, including improving lung function. \u201cIt improves your overall cardiovascular condition,\u201d notes Dr. Coletta. \u201cIt limits your risk for heart disease and stroke, and finally, people just feel better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people have even achieved some very impressive athletic feats while having EIB. Consider elite athletes like U.S. swimmer<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/news\/olympic-athletes-with-asthma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Dolan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who won two Olympic gold medals despite having exercise-induced asthma, and the elite English marathoner<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asthma.org.uk\/advice\/your-stories\/paula-radcliffe-theres-no-reason-you-shouldnt-be-the-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paula Radcliffe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the ACAAI, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/asthma\/types-of-asthma\/exercise-induced-bronchoconstriction-eib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sports that are most likely to trigger symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of EIB are cold-weather sports and sports that require constant activity, such as cross-country skiing, long-distance running, soccer, ice hockey, biking, and ice skating. Cold air tends to be dryer air, and when you rapidly inhale cold, dry air, it can irritate your bronchial tubes, which constrict and reduce airflow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you don\u2019t necessarily need to avoid doing any particular physical activity. But you do need to be proactive so you can prevent an attack from happening just when you\u2019re starting to hit your stride.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Rescue inhalers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you just have exercise-induced asthma, you may need to always prepare for workouts by using your inhaler with a short-acting beta agonist, which will help open up your airways. These inhaled medications include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levalbuterol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levalbuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or your healthcare provider might suggest another type of inhaled medication such as ipratropium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Control medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have asthma and exercise-induced asthma, you may need to take daily<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/exercise-induced-asthma\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term control medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. Frequent use of SABA alone can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3651111\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gradually lessen their effectiveness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To prevent this phenomenon, if exercise is your only symptom trigger but is a frequent one, a long-term control medication may also be recommended in this circumstance. According to the Mayo Clinic, some options include inhaled corticosteroids such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluticasone, available in products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flovent-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flovent HFA<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Budesonide, available in products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pulmicort-flexhaler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulmicort Flexhaler<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mometasone, available in products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/asmanex-30-metered-doses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asmanex<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beclomethasone, available in products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/qvar-redihaler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qvar Redihaler<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A combination inhaler that combines a corticosteroid and a long-acting beta agonist (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/long-acting-beta-agonists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LABA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advair-diskus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advair Diskus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fluticasone and salmeterol) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/symbicort-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symbicort <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(budesonide and formoterol)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral leukotriene modifiers such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/singulair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singulair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/montelukast-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">montelukast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/accolate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accolate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (zafirlukast) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyflo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyflo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (zileuton)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/leukotriene-modifiers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leukotriene modifiers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also be taken before exercising, with an expected onset of action <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17454341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within two hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Workout tips for people with exercise-induced asthma<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re exercising with exercise-induced asthma, the following tips can help minimize your symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Warm up<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It may be tempting to dive right into your workout, but you should make time to warm up first.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Know your triggers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you also have asthma, chances are that you know <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-attack-triggers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what tends to trigger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an asthma attack or asthma exacerbation. It might be environmental irritants such as air pollution or a high pollen count. You may want to monitor these phenomena as well as any other potential allergens, so that, on days when there\u2019s a high pollen count, you can take your workout indoors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Keep an eye on the weather. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High temperatures, high humidity, sudden weather changes, storms, and cold temperatures have all been known to trigger asthma symptoms. Cold air or dry air are especially notorious<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafa.org\/weather-triggers-asthma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for triggering bronchoconstriction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bring your inhaler with you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cYou should always carry an inhaler with you at all times,\u201d says De Vries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medicate beforehand. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of inhalers<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use your inhaler about 30 minutes before you exercise. \u201cThis way, when you exercise, you should be able to do so with wide open airways,\u201d says Dr. Coletta.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wear a scarf.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re planning to exercise outside in the cold, wear a scarf around your neck and the lower part of your face, at least until you warm up, says McGovern. And try to breathe through your nose as much as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cool down. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your body a chance to readjust.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-asthma\/\"><b>Home remedies for asthma<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What to expect long-term<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s not a cure for asthma, including exercise-induced asthma. Even if you rarely experience symptoms, you still have asthma. \u201cIt\u2019s more of a management issue,\u201d explains McGovern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important thing is to acknowledge that you have this condition and develop an asthma action plan that will help you be prepared and prevent impact on your quality of life. This will include asthma management strategies and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma medications or treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use as needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re regularly experiencing attacks when you try to exercise, it\u2019s time to speak to your provider or respiratory therapist.
