The incidence is estimated to be very low, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1874280\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in every 57,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is frequently combined with a decongestant. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin-d-24-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, contains both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pseudoephedrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pseudoephedrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/14\/cyproheptadine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry\/article\/abs\/cyproheptadine-in-anorexia-nervosa\/A033B3D222EAA70A2A50A2EF4C207A53\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anorexia nervosa gain weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Weight gain is a long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s associated more with prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the chronic use of nonprescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The drug has to be taken regularly for weeks or months for weight gain to become obvious. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loratadine<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antihistamine-weight-gain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not as strongly associated with weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as some other antihistamines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but that\u2019s partly because it\u2019s less likely to be used regularly as a sleep aid or another off-label purpose. If unwanted weight gain is experienced when taking any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drowsiness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drowsiness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a non-drowsy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is less likely to cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than Benadryl, which contains a first-generation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diphenhydramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That doesn\u2019t mean that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a possible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the incidence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Diphenhydramine-Hydrochloride-diphenhydramine-hydrochloride-1140.941\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among people taking diphenhydramine, it\u2019s around 8% among people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; that\u2019s an improvement, but still one out of 12. \u201cLess-drowsy\u201d is probably a more accurate description than \u201cnon-drowsy.\u201d The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be as severe or frequent as with other antihistamines, but it can be anticipated and planned for. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is too severe, stop taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, try a different <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/non-drowsy-benadryl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-drowsy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/8-ways-treat-seasonal-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other treatment options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the incidence is unknown. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedating<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effects\u2014the opposite of anxiety\u2014so anxiety is considered an unlikely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the other hand, many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin-d-24-hour\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are combination drugs that include decongestants like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pseudoephedrine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pseudoephedrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Decongestants are stimulants. They excite the central nervous system, so anxiety, restlessness, nervousness, and physical symptoms of anxiety such as high blood pressure and racing heartbeats are commonly experienced. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to be causing anxiety, check the active ingredients list. Consider switching to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> product without a decongestant. If the product being used only contains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, switch to a different non-drowsy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cetirizine-hcl-allergy-child\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-timeline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins to show effects one to three hours after a dose is taken. These effects peak in about eight hours. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and racing heartbeats could manifest soon after the first dose. Many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as headache, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and diarrhea begin early, as well. Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, are delayed, such as weight gain or liver problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should only be used when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a problem. Most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will go away when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is stopped. A single dose can be effective for up to 24 hours, so wait about a day after taking the last dose to see <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should not be used long-term except under the supervision of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects of loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> require daily use over weeks and months to become a problem.
