Healthcare providers also prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brisdelle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a low-dose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mesylate capsule used to treat severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot flashes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or night sweats in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-perimenopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopausal women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pexeva\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pexeva<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another chemical variant of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a well-known member of a class of drugs called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). These drugs increase a chemical in the brain called serotonin which is responsible for passing signals between nerves. In this way, it increases activity in the parts of the brain responsible for mood. Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a highly effective drug, it does have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> very similar to other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-paroxetine-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of paroxetine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=f22886f5-230c-47e4-9dd8-ffb14c8d6ae4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in clinical trials is headache. Certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea are more commonly experienced in people taking immediate-release <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in people taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paroxetine-hcl-er\"><span id=\"depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug information includes a black-box warning about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1463965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of suicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among children, teens, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Short-term studies have not shown an increased suicide risk in adults beyond the age of 24. Depression is not considered a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the onset or worsening of depression, especially at the beginning of treatment, is a sign that suicide may be a risk. If anyone taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gets depressed or their depression worsens, immediately talk to the prescribing healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While insomnia is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its likelihood depends on the type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being taken. In clinical trials for immediate-release <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ef3b5cbe-f9e1-c1ac-79da-cfe14e3a7e7e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of participants reported problems sleeping. This was about twice the rate for participants who were not taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Only up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=483bd97f-c4d0-4e23-aaa8-6334f4471e0c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of participants in the clinical trials for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, reported sleep problems. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=50361fc8-8fba-1c45-e054-00144ff88e88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia was not a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brisdelle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms. Insomnia is usually not a medical emergency, but it isn\u2019t good, either. If falling asleep or staying asleep is a problem for any reason, get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sexual-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can decrease sexual interest, affect sexual functioning, or both. In clinical trials, at least 7% of participants with MDD taking extended-release <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported a decrease in libido. Twenty-six of men had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ejaculation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems and 5% reported impotence as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among women, one out of 10 had problems reaching orgasm. However, women taking low-dose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacytimes.com\/view\/low-dose-paroxetine-wont-cause-weight-gain-in-women-with-hot-flashes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> significant changes in sexual function. It helps to know that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/epidemiology-and-psychiatric-sciences\/article\/postssri-sexual-dysfunction-other-enduring-sexual-dysfunctions\/8343798C6C29E850661020EF0CEA8968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the majority of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who take an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience sexual side effects such as a decrease in genital sensitivity. Because of its genital numbing effects, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the most effective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for treating premature <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ejaculation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sexual problems, though, will only last as long as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is being taken. Genital sensitivity and normal sexual function will return when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sex-on-ssris\/\"><b>Sex on antidepressants: Exploring the sexual side effects of SSRIs<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment, but it only occurred in 1% to 5% of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine in clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Women on low-dose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for menopausal symptoms do not experience weight changes. If weight goes up or down involuntarily when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, report this problem to the prescribing healthcare provider. There are lifestyle and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/the-best-diet-for-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> changes that can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"headaches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches are one of the most common problems people have with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In clinical trials, 17% to 18% of people taking immediate-release <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported headaches as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In clinical trials, 15% to 27% of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported headaches. About 6% had problems with headaches in low-dose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trials. In all cases, though, headache was one of the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Headaches, however, were not a common reason in these trials for people to quit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If headaches become a serious problem when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, talk to the prescribing healthcare provider.
