The prescribing information for metoprolol succinate extended-release also recommends that patients take the medication with a meal or just after a meal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are other dietary considerations to keep in mind when taking metoprolol. Remember, the drug works best when you also stick to a blood pressure-lowering diet. What might that look like? \u201cAs cardiologists, we advise a heart-healthy diet rich in whole grains, legumes\/beans, vegetables, whole fruits, low-fat dairy, and lean proteins as part of a comprehensive heart-healthy lifestyle,\u201d Dr. Brown Talaska says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Goyfman recommends the DASH diet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/nejm199704173361601\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">citing studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have found it to be an effective approach to lowering blood pressure.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-blood-pressure-diet\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DASH diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) includes recommendations such as keeping your sodium intake to under 2,300 mg per day (the amount in one teaspoon of salt), and emphasizes fruits, veggies, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and foods low in saturated fat. Additionally, drugmakers do not give any specific warnings about metoprolol interactions with food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, there are some foods and drinks that have the potential to negatively affect the absorption of metoprolol. Not only that, but because your goal while on metoprolol is to lower your blood pressure, it makes sense to avoid foods that can increase blood pressure. Here are some foods and drinks that are best avoided when you are taking metoprolol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-salty-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Salty foods\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to lower your blood pressure, reducing sodium is an important first step, as it will enhance the effects of any blood pressure-lowering medication you are taking. \u201cFoods that can worsen blood pressure include any foods that are high in sodium,\u201d says Dr. Goyfman. Sodium is added to almost any food you don\u2019t make yourself. Monitor your consumption of take-out food, frozen meals, canned soups, and other prepared foods. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/changes-you-can-make-to-manage-high-blood-pressure\/shaking-the-salt-habit-to-lower-high-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends keeping your daily sodium intake under 2,300 mg per day, or ideally under 1,500 mg daily, especially if you have high blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-processed-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Processed foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Brown Talaska recommends reducing highly processed foods when you are looking to manage blood pressure. \u201cFoods that exacerbate high blood pressure and should be avoided include processed meats, including deli and cured meats, preserved canned foods, fried foods,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-sodium snacks such as pickles, condiments, and sauces such as ketchup, soy sauce, salad dressings, and barbecue sauce, as well as table salt,\u201d she advises.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have found that following a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4366416\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mediterranean<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can reduce your blood pressure as an alternative to these types of food. He doesn\u2019t recommend more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/what-standard-drink\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 serving per day for women or 2 servings a day for men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, one of the side effects of metoprolol is dizziness or lightheadedness, and alcohol may make that dizziness worse. Many doctors recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/metoprolol-oral-route\/description\/drg-20071141\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not drinking alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all when you first start taking metoprolol to see how the drug affects you. Even once your body adjusts, it\u2019s best to limit alcohol consumption while on metoprolol. You can also consult your provider about alcohol consumption and metoprolol if you have questions. If you take metoprolol extended-release sprinkle capsules (brand name Kapspargo), you should avoid alcohol altogether. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9cfa55b4-15c6-40f7-b6e5-41096ee51bfc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this drug notes that alcohol causes the medicine in the capsule to release too quickly, increasing the risk of side effects, and because of this, you should avoid alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-excess-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Excess caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drs. Brown Talaska and Goyfman recommend limiting caffeine consumption while on metoprolol. \u201cCaffeinated products, such as coffee, have the ability to decrease the effectiveness of metoprolol,\u201d Dr. Brown Talaska explains. Dr. Goyfman agrees that it\u2019s best to avoid caffeine because it can decrease drug absorption. Additionally, excess caffeine can increase your blood pressure. \u201cCaffeine can raise the blood pressure and may make the metoprolol less effective, so it is best to avoid [consuming caffeine] if possible,\u201d he advises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-licorice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Licorice<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metoprolol can interact with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/interactions-check.php?drug_list=2383-0,1615-0&amp;professional=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licorice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which may increase blood pressure and counteract metoprolol&#8217;s effects. It can also lower potassium levels, further raising blood pressure.
