A commonly-prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blocker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slows down the heart. Slower, less forceful heartbeats ease up the work demanded of the heart and, combined with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s effects on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, brings down <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Taken as immediate-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">release tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capsules or tablets, or given as injections, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also be taken as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/verelan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verelan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/calan-sr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calan SR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isoptin SR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Possible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are relatively minor and uncommon, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause problems due to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pre-existing conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects-of-verapamil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of verapamil<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are mild and relatively uncommon and are more likely in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> orally than those getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e18cc04c-a808-4d92-9b66-762cd787abc5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=a0343397-897b-46d6-943f-a87e07e1de10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect of verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tablets was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/constipation-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reported by 7% of participants. Most other common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were reported by 3% or less of participants including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle cramps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated liver enzymes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluid retention (edema)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuffy sinuses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-verapamil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of verapamil<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects of verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congestive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems including slow heartbeats and heart block<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver poisoning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colon paralysis (paralytic ileus)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"verapamil-and-congestive-heart-failure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and congestive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In people with certain pre-existing conditions, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">congestive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of its heart-slowing effects. The estimated incidence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Verelan-verapamil-hydrochloride-960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.8%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a number high enough to cause concern. However, the majority of people who experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other heart conditions such as slow heartbeats or problems with the bottom chambers of the heart. It\u2019s also more likely in people who are also taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another type of drug that slows down the heart. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are warned to be cautious when prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to people with these conditions. These patients must be monitored closely, and if signs of heart failure worsen, treatment will likely need to be stopped.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-verapamil-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s effects on the heart begin quickly, so cardiovascular adverse effects like slow heartbeats, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems could begin soon after the first dose. Most of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are delayed. Severe drug reactions typically take several weeks to develop, but can rapidly progress when symptoms appear.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-verapamil-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, headache, dizziness, and nausea may get better over time. There also may be ways to prevent or minimize them. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that don\u2019t improve are usually reversible when the drug is stopped. This includes some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems. How long it takes to feel better will depend on the format being prescribed, but it shouldn\u2019t take longer than a day or two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-verapamil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often used in the short-term for urgent medical conditions, it is also intended for long-term treatment, often with other drugs. There are no adverse effects specifically caused by the long-term use of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"verapamil-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can worsen many heart conditions because it slows down the heart. In some cases, the hazards are so severe that healthcare providers are prohibited from using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dysfunction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the lower chambers of the heart (severe ventricular <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dysfunction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second- to third-degree heart block (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrioventricular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> block) except in people with a pacemaker<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sick sinus syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a defect in the heart\u2019s natural pacemaker) except in people with a pacemaker<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or atrial flutter in cases where the heart has created its own \u201cshortcut\u201d to pass electrical signals from the upper chambers of the heart to the lower chambers (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiogenic shock (the heart is not pumping enough blood)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies to the drug<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s safety during pregnancy is unknown. Animal studies suggest that high doses can kill a fetus or slow development. Though not prohibited, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used cautiously in pregnant women.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should not be taken when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The drug is present in human breast milk and is considered too risky for a nursing infant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has not approved <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tablets or capsules for use in children or adolescents. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injections are approved for use in children as young as newborns as an emergency treatment for overly rapid heartbeats (PSVT). However, though <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-approved, it is not recommended in babies younger than 1 year old because of its effects on blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because people older than 65 may have problems eliminating the drug, healthcare providers are advised to start with low doses. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not recommended for use in older adults with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"verapamil-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are relatively uncommon, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause serious problems in people with pre-existing conditions or if too much is taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slows down the heart, it can cause serious problems in people with existing heart problems. Healthcare providers will be cautious and often monitor people closely if they give <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to anyone with the following cardiovascular conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thick heart muscles (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild heart block<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A heart valve problem called aortic stenosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild to moderate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verapamil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause problems if people have other pre-existing medical conditions not related to the heart.
