It is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK534787\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most commonly used<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for emergency blood pressure treatment, for high blood pressure in pregnant women, and to treat elevated blood pressure before and after surgery. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blocker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it also works as another type of blood pressure drug called an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/alpha-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alpha blocker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blocker<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lowers blood pressure by both widening <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and slowing down the heart. in blood pressure when sitting up or standing up, called postural <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or orthostatic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people getting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injections can expect to have this problem, but it will depend on how soon after the injection the person sits or stands up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-labetalol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of labetalol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congestive heart Almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=99a715a0-4579-410c-b102-7ef6fab8db55\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of participants in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection clinical trials experienced this problem. It is more likely to occur in people who try to sit up, stand up, or are tilted up in their beds within three hours of getting the injection. It can also happen to people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tablets, but it&rsquo;s less common. Postural <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical condition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because people can fall, have accidents, or injure themselves. Immediately tell the prescriber or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if faintness or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lightheadedness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs when standing up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"labetalol-and-cardiovascular-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slows down the heart and decreases the amount of blood pumped by the heart. For this reason, it can worsen many existing heart conditions including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heart rhythm problems, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chest pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also decrease the ability of the heart to pump blood after a coronary bypass graft surgery. These <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> normally don&rsquo;t occur in people with a healthy heart. People with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems, however, should discuss the risks with the prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-labetalol-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rsquo;s commonly-experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Labetalol-Hydrochloride-Tablets-labetalol-hydrochloride-3286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in treatment such as nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and upset stomach. For people receiving an injection, postural <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is most likely to be a problem in the first three hours. Slowing of the heart (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bradycardia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can happen right after the first dose or during an injection. Some other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, may take a few weeks or months to manifest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-labetalol-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is commonly used in urgent situations like when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dangerously high, during pregnancy, or before and after surgery. It might help to know that in clinical trials, the dropout rate due to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was slightly lower than it is for other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Any remaining side effects should fade when the drug is discontinued. With an extensive history of use in pregnant women, there is no evidence that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is associated with birth defects, miscarriages, or other pregnancy problems.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is present in human breast milk in small amounts, but its safety for a nursing baby has not been studied. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501151\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk to the infant is considered low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has not approved <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for use in children and adolescents. However, in urgent or emergency cases of severely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is commonly used in children. Whatever side effects <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause in a child is outweighed by the seriousness of the blood pressure crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People older than 65 can be given <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> safely, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers may be cautious or monitor the person for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The main concerns are falls and injuries due to dizziness or postural <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, possible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and an increased risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to declining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver function<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"labetalol-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems due to pre-existing conditions, overdose, and withdrawal are all possible when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some pre-existing conditions can be worsened by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labetalol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
