style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will cause some impairment in nearly everyone who takes the drug. Most commonly, people will feel drowsy, groggy, or tired. The incidence of drowsiness could be as high as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Valium-diazepam-2100.1196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. About half of people taking the drug will feel worn out, and about a third will have problems with coordination, movement, or talking. Forty percent of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also expect to have problems remembering new things like what they&rsquo;ve recently done or where they&rsquo;ve been. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF00429206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory impairment is significant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and happens with just one dose. People taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be aware of this and modify their activities accordingly to avoid falls, accidents, and injury. Driving is a particular risk and could result in an accident or DUI. People should also avoid other substances that cause impairment such as alcohol, marijuana, or drugs that affect the brain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-diazepam-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins working quickly after a dose is taken, typically in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 to 60 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most commonly experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fatigue, headache, incontinence, slowed heart rate, and problems with balance can start that early. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as libido and weight changes are delayed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical dependence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drug abuse, and withdrawal are most likely when the drug is taken daily for longer than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Valium-diazepam-2100.1196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one to two weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-diazepam-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are advised to give <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short term<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the risk of dependence and abuse. For most people the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will wear off after the last dose is taken. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a long-acting drug, so it could take 12 or more hours before someone feels back to their baseline. The effects could linger for up to a week since it could take two or more weeks to completely clear a dose from the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-diazepam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only intended for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-term<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term use<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risks causing physical dependency on the drug which can quickly lead to drug abuse. Long-term chronic use can lead to severe and prolonged withdrawal when the drug is discontinued. Finally, although it is not considered a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/benzodiazepine-use-may-raise-risk-alzheimers-disease-201409107397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown that taking a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily for three months or longer increases the risk of developing Alzheimer&rsquo;s later in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diazepam-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of possible hazards, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is never prescribed to people with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/myasthenia-gravis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myasthenia gravis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breathing problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sleep-apnea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narrow-angle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/glaucoma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untreated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open-angle glaucoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any history of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only used when absolutely necessary during pregnancy. It has been shown to cause birth defects in animals. In addition, the baby could be born with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not recommended when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/breastfeeding-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The drug passes into human <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast milk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can cause sedation and slowed breathing in a nursing infant.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-approved for use in children as young as 6 months old, but may be used in infants as young as 1 month old as an anti-seizure medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People older than 65 are usually given the lowest possible dose for the shortest period possible. Seniors are more vulnerable to falls and injuries due to the sedative and motor control effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
