Like similar <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for heart conditions are more likely to experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order of incidence, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=1b8a4689-3916-4f4b-b54a-bbb4e322d79b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold fingers, toes, hands, and feet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling faint when standing up<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people given <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Keep in mind, however, that people who have had a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are at risk for serious heart problems, including death, in the days and weeks following a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combined with conventional treatment lowers the risk of most of these serious problems including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">size of infarct, irregular heartbeats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a secondary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and death. People may still experience these problems, but they are not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are consequences of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does increase the risk for some serious problems. In order of likelihood, the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects of atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment following a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-atenolol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of atenolol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, the likelihood of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be based on the medical condition being treated or whether <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken orally or injected. People with serious heart problems are more likely to experience cardiovascular problems than people given <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for blood pressure, migraines, or tremor. The most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects of atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart block<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulmonary embolism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airway closure (bronchospasm)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chest pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to coronary artery disease are at risk for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as worsened <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, occurrence of a heart attack, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irregular heartbeats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is stopped suddenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bradycardia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bradycardia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowing the heart and reducing the strength of individual heartbeats are the intended effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment. Both effects reduce blood pressure and the incidence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chest pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They also reduce how much work the heart has to do, a benefit for people who have just had a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These effects can also help improve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irregular heartbeats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, sometimes a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-heart-rate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heartbeat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be a problem. If it\u2019s too slow, the heart will not be pumping enough blood and oxygen to the body. If the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems too slow, then talk to the prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If symptoms are experienced, then immediate medical care is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"leg-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg pain is not a commonly-experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In combined U.S. and foreign trials, approximately 3% of participants complained of leg pain or leg cramps, but as of yet, there is no explanation for why. If leg pain is debilitating or doesn\u2019t go away, then ask the prescriber for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 3% to 4% of participants in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clinical trials reported nausea, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of most oral drugs. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally a temporary and mild <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, talk to the prescribing doctor if it\u2019s severe, accompanied by persistent vomiting, or interferes significantly with daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diarrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea is not commonly experienced in people using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In clinical trials, the incidence was between 2% and 3%. For most people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, diarrhea will be mild and temporary. It should be reported to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if diarrhea is watery, bloody, or doesn\u2019t go away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-atenolol-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins working on slowing the heart within an hour of the first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atenolol\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be experienced within an hour or two of taking the first dose. Most of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Tenormin-atenolol-1128.3571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generally occur early in treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include dizziness, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. Some of the more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are delayed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, requiring several weeks or months of treatment to become obvious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-atenolol-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may improve over time, but any effects involving <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heartbeats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or blood pressure may require lower doses to improve. Any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that don\u2019t get better over time will usually improve when the drug is stopped. There are no <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specifically caused by long-term use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"atenolol-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slows the heart, it is never prescribed to people with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow heartbeat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to a problem with the heart\u2019s natural \u201cpacemaker\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bradycardia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate to serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart block<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congestive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A heart that doesn\u2019t pump enough blood or oxygen to the body (cardiogenic shock)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also contraindicated in any person allergic to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be avoided during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pregnancy-heart-rate-palpitations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in the second and third trimesters. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does cross the placenta and could cause birth defects or low birth weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atenolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not recommended for nursing mothers.
