It\u2019s also used as an add-on drug to help treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluid retention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">edema<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in those with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cirrhosis of the liver, or who are taking drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/estrogens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Low sodium, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, low chlorine, and high <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all potentially serious medical conditions that can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as problems with muscles and nerves. For this reason, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically will perform regular blood tests to monitor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s effects on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrolytes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"chlorthalidone-and-orthostatic-hypotension\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and orthostatic hypotension<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthostatic or postural hypotension happens when the brain has problems regulating blood pressure. In particular, blood pressure does not compensate when someone stands up or sits up. The brain is quickly deprived of blood, causing dizziness, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lightheadedness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and, in some cases, passing out. Although the incidence has not been determined, orthostatic hypotension is considered a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effect of chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seniors are more vulnerable than younger adults. Alcohol, illegal drugs, and blood pressure medications can all make the condition worse. Because there\u2019s a high risk for accidents or injury, always inform the prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if standing up causes dizziness or fainting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-chlorthalidone-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the mild <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can occur <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Chlorthalidone-chlorthalidone-1961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early in treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrolyte imbalances<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, are usually delayed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as are appetite loss, blood disorders, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and orthostatic hypotension.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-chlorthalidone-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may improve over time. Minor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will generally go away in about four to five days after the last dose is taken. Minor problems with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrolytes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can usually be corrected by increasing salt or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intake and won\u2019t require stopping chlorthalidone treatment. Some more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, may require <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be stopped, at least temporarily. The good news is that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrolyte<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abnormalities\u2014even serious ones\u2014are usually quickly reversible with appropriate treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-chlorthalidone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is intended to be used for months or years to control blood pressure. No <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specifically due to long-term use have been identified as long as regular blood tests are performed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chlorthalidone-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is prohibited in people with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anuria, or a failure to produce urine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A known allergy to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A known allergy to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfa drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sulfonamides\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonamides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used during pregnancy, but it does have risks. It can also reduce the transfer of nutrients across the placenta, so it is generally avoided in pregnant women who already have placental complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be taken by women who are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/breastfeeding-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it is considered risky. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crosses into breast milk and could cause problems in a nursing infant. However, seniors may be more vulnerable to dehydration, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrolyte imbalances<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or side effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may start them on lower doses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chlorthalidone-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorthalidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have significant risks because they deplete the body of essential water and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrolytes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
