Reports of shortages began over the summer, but the situation was confirmed on Oct. 12, when the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-announces-shortage-adderall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a shortage of the immediate-release formulation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Adderall?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall is a prescription central nervous system stimulant that treats ADHD and narcolepsy. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that affect impulse control and improve your attention and focus. It&rsquo;s available in extended-release and immediate-release formulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whats-causing-the-adderall-shortage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&rsquo;s causing the Adderall shortage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3489818\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 million children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/2018\/04\/five-million-american-adults-misusing-prescription-stimulants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 million adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. are prescribed stimulant medication. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2022\/10\/21\/adderall-shortage-adhd-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the shortage is the result of three main factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise in demand for Adderall<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandemic-induced labor shortages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavily regulated supply chain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These issues have caused manufacturing, production, and distribution delays so that supply cannot meet demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA first reported an Adderall shortage in September 2019, and it seems to be an ongoing issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-formulations-are-affected\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which formulations are affected?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shortage affects only the immediate-release formulation, according to the FDA&rsquo;s announcement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The FDA is in frequent communication with all manufacturers of amphetamine mixed salts, and one of those companies, Teva, is experiencing ongoing intermittent manufacturing delays,&rdquo; the FDA stated. &ldquo;Other manufacturers continue to produce amphetamine mixed salts, but there is not sufficient supply to continue to meet most U.S. market demand through those producers.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients may find that extended-release formulations are hard to find in their area as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-alternatives-to-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the alternatives to Adderall?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take an immediate-release formulation, and you&rsquo;re concerned that you may have trouble getting your medication during the Adderall shortage, contact your healthcare provider and ask about other options that might meet your needs in the interim.
