{"id":55007,"date":"2022-11-07T11:43:30","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T16:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=55007"},"modified":"2024-10-25T11:03:45","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T15:03:45","slug":"ubrelvy-side-effects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ubrelvy-side-effects\/","title":{"rendered":"Ubrelvy side effects and how to avoid them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ubrelvy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a brand-name prescription drug taken that relieves <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/migraine-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> headaches.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy, taken at the start of a migraine attack, reduces the pain and some of the symptoms of migraine while shortening the duration of the headache. Ubrogepant, the active ingredient in Ubrelvy, is a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy works by blocking the effects of a small, protein-like compound (CGRP) that causes blood vessels to widen quickly at the start of a migraine headache. Rapid blood vessel dilation is responsible for migraine pain, so blocking CGRP helps to end pain and a few other migraine symptoms such as nausea and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32648856\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensitivity to light<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ubrogepant is a relatively safe drug to take. Common side effects are not commonly experienced, and serious side effects have not yet been recorded. The only significant concern is possible drug interactions, of which there are many. Still, it&rsquo;s not known if Ubrelvy is safe to take more than eight times in a month. That limits its use for people with frequent migraine attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ubrelvy\/what-is\"><b>What is Ubrelvy?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects-of-ubrelvy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of Ubrelvy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most commonly experienced side effect of Ubrelvy is nausea, but the incidence is low. Only three common side effects were reported in Ubrelvy&rsquo;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=fd9f9458-fd96-4688-be3f-f77b3d1af6ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and all three are low incidence. These common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/907005\/Ubrelvy\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-ubrelvy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Ubrelvy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no reported serious side effects of Ubrelvy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ubrelvy-and-nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy and nausea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea is the most commonly experienced side effect of Ubrelvy. But it&rsquo;s not commonly experienced. Healthcare professionals understand side effects by comparing the percentage of people who experience a side effect taking a drug versus how many people experience the same problem when they&rsquo;re taking a &ldquo;fake&rdquo; or &ldquo;nothing&rdquo; drug called a placebo. The difference gives the number of people who experience a side effect because they&rsquo;re taking the drug. That&rsquo;s understood as &ldquo;risk&rdquo; for that side effect. In Ubrelvy clinical trials, 2% of people taking a placebo&mdash;the &ldquo;nothing&rdquo; tablet&mdash;reported nausea as a side effect. Two percent of people taking 50 mg of Ubrelvy tablets experienced nausea. That&rsquo;s the same number, so there&rsquo;s no significant risk of nausea taking 50 mg Ubrelvy tablets. However, 4% of people taking 100 mg of Ubrelvy experienced nausea as a side effect. In this case, the risk of nausea due to 100 mg Ubrelvy tablets is 1 out of 50, the difference between 4% for Ubrelvy and 2% for the placebo. The good news? None of the common side effects of Ubrelvy have a risk higher than 1 in 50. That&rsquo;s a surprisingly low number for what are mild side effects, especially when compared to migraine pain. If nausea happens, tell the prescribing healthcare provider. It may or may not be due to Ubrelvy, but there may be treatment options or practical changes that can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ubrelvy-and-medication-overuse-headache\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy and medication overuse headache<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication overuse headache is not considered a side effect or a risk when taking Ubrelvy. Medication overuse headache, or MOH, is similar to a migraine attack and happens when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK538150\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people overuse common migraine drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/triptans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ergots, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and combination pain relievers. MOH often escalates episodic headaches into chronic headaches, though this generally reverses when the drugs are stopped. Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7412872\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy has not been shown to be associated with MOH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is important not to use Ubrelvy more than eight times in a 30-day period. Medication overuse headaches may be a risk if Ubrelvy is used too often, but healthcare professionals are uncertain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-ubrelvy-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do Ubrelvy side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of Ubrelvy&rsquo;s side effects can start early in treatment. When a dose is taken, it reaches its peak levels in the body in about 90 minutes&mdash;longer if the tablet is taken with food. Side effects, then, could become apparent about an hour or two after a dose is taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-ubrelvy-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Ubrelvy side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is only intended for the acute treatment of migraines and should not be used to treat more than eight migraines a month. Any side effects should improve at least by the time a dose is cleared from the body. A single dose has a half-life of five to seven hours, so the drug should dwindle to undetectable levels by the next day.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-long-term-side-effects-of-ubrelvy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the long-term side effects of Ubrelvy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is only intended to be used as an acute treatment of migraines. It is not taken in regular doses. If taken as instructed&mdash;no more than eight times a month&mdash;there are no long-term side effects associated with Ubrelvy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ubrelvy-contraindications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy contraindications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is contraindicated in anyone who has a known allergy to the drug or anyone with end-stage kidney disease or on dialysis. Although allergic reactions are not a reported side effect of Ubrelvy, they are considered possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is prescribed to pregnant women, but there are no studies concerning the possible risks. Animal studies suggest there may be a risk to the unborn baby when taken in very high doses. Women and their healthcare providers will need to discuss the risks and benefits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is prescribed to women who are breastfeeding, but there&rsquo;s no certainty about whether Ubrelvy is present in human breast milk or can affect a nursing infant.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had not approved Ubrelvy for use in children or adolescents younger than 18.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although clinical studies suggest that Ubrelvy is as safe for seniors as for younger adults, healthcare professionals are urged to be cautious and prescribe Ubrelvy at low doses to people older than 65.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ubrelvy-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, Ubrelvy is safe to take for a variety of people and under a variety of circumstances. There are only a few cautions and warnings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cautions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cautions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ubrogepant is broken down by the liver and eliminated by the kidneys, dose adjustments are not required in people with mild to moderate liver or kidney disease. People with severe liver disease, however, will only be able to take 50 mg doses both at the start of a headache and as a second dose if needed. People with severe kidney disease or who are on dialysis should not take Ubrelvy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"abuse-and-dependence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy is not habit-forming and does not cause physical dependence or withdrawal symptoms when discontinued.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"overdose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call a poison control center or get medical attention if too much Ubrelvy is taken. The maximum dose for any 24-hour period is 200 mg, but this could be lower for people with liver problems or who are taking certain drugs. Although most people will take a second dose to handle a migraine attack, some people may not be allowed to take a second dose because of drug interactions. The prescribed dosage should be considered the maximum dosage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ubrelvy-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy drug interactions are very significant. Several drugs affect how well the body breaks down ubrogepant, the active ingredient in Ubrelvy. In some cases, Ubrelvy can&rsquo;t be taken with these drugs. In other cases, the dosages may be reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The liver enzymes responsible for breaking down ubrogepant are called CYP3A4, BCRP, and P-gp. Some drugs block these enzymes, so ubrogepant builds up in the bloodstream, increasing the risk of side effects. These drugs are called CYP3A4 inhibitors, BCRP inhibitors, or P-gp inhibitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy cannot be used in people taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. These drugs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clarithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chloramphenicol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chloramphenicol<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some azole <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antifungals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antifungal medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ketoconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketoconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/itraconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itraconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/posaconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posaconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/voriconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voriconazole<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/protease-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protease inhibitors<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A variety of drugs that inhibit disease processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mifepristone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mifepristone<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In people taking moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors, the first dose of Ubrelvy cannot exceed 50 mg and a second dose is not allowed. In people taking weak CYP3A4 inhibitors or any drug that blocks BCRP or P-gp, the first and second doses cannot exceed 50 mg. The list of problem drugs here is fairly long and includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrolide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotics such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/erythromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erythromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/quinolones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoroquinolone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotics like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All other azole antifungals such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluconazole<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-pressure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-blockers\"><span href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/verapamil-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hepatitis-c-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatitis C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some immune suppressants such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclosporine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclosporine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabidiols<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit or grapefruit juice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, some drugs greatly speed up the breakdown of ubrogepant. In those cases, ubrogepant will probably not do any good, so Ubrelvy treatment is usually avoided when these drugs are taken:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/tuberculosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuberculosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifampin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-seizure drug<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenytoin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/barbiturates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbiturates<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The herbal supplement St. John&rsquo;s wort<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, it&rsquo;s a long and confusing list of drug interactions, but these drugs do affect whether Ubrelvy can be taken and in what amounts.
