{"id":55152,"date":"2022-11-14T09:30:54","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T14:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=55152"},"modified":"2025-09-11T22:08:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:08:05","slug":"adhd-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"6 best exercises for ADHD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/what-is-adhd-symptoms-causes-treatments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurological condition that interferes with many typical functions of the brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly those related to planning and organization, impulsivity, focus and attention, and executive functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most other mental health conditions, ADHD is best managed with a combination of strategies that consider an individual\u2019s overall health, daily routine, social and emotional needs, and even their personality. For people with ADHD, this often looks like taking daily medications, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating a balanced diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, working with a counselor or therapist, and exercising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait\u2026exercising? Yes! There are a number of studied benefits to using exercise as a means of alleviating ADHD symptoms in both adults and kids. \u201cImprovements in neurobehavioral functions [because of exercise] have been demonstrated,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sid Khurana<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, medical director of outpatient services at Nevada Mental Health, \u201cincluding reduced impulsivity and hyperactivity, improved attention, and enhanced performance on executive functioning tasks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do you take a broad suggestion such as \u201cexercise more\u201d and turn it into better management of ADHD? Here are 6 types of exercise to try\u2014as well as how to overcome some common challenges to exercising with ADHD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-exercise-help-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does exercise help ADHD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s been a lot of research on how exercise impacts the brains of kids and animals, but not as much on adults, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/blog\/authors\/andy-kahn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Kahn, Psy.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associate director for Behavior Change &amp; Expertise at Understood.org. We can extrapolate what we know, however, and apply it to adults\u2014and what we know is that moderate to intense exercise can reduce the ADHD brain\u2019s tendency to be overactive, especially with how it processes stimuli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While struggling with attention is typical in people with ADHD, Dr. Kahn says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-facts-myths\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this symptom is often misunderstood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it\u2019s not so much inattention but misplaced attention, or having difficulty focusing on the right things in an environment. Some studies have shown that exercise helps mute an overactive brain, allowing people with ADHD to filter out unnecessary stimuli. Other studies, says Dr. Kahn, suggest that exercise may be able to reduce impulsivity, making it easier to think before you act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering why exercise has these effects on people with ADHD, there\u2019s an easy explanation: dopamine. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cns-stimulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stimulant medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and intense exercise both stimulate dopamine, which regulates energy levels down to more typical levels,\u201d Dr. Kahn says. \u201cIt results in better neurotransmitter function that allows people\u2019s brains to do what they would normally do [without ADHD].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, exercise has a similar effect on neurotransmitters as, for example, a dose of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vyvanse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increasing dopamine and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6945516\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improving executive functioning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/nevadamentalhealth.com\/our-psychiatrists\/\">Dr. Khurana<\/a> says that people often report worsening in their symptoms when they stop exercising.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, it\u2019s tough for anyone to start up a new exercise routine, and some common challenges make it especially hard for people with ADHD. Dr. Kahn says that people with ADHD experience \u201cdisorganization, poor time management, disrupted sleep schedules\u2026in the absence of consistent habits, it can be exceptionally hard to fit exercise in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-kind-of-exercise-works-best\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of exercise works best?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s some good news: any kind of exercise is good exercise if you have ADHD. There\u2019s some evidence that more complex activities (like swimming, biking, martial arts, or even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4668196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rock climbing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may be better for people with ADHD, but \u201cthe best exercise is the one you can do regularly, consistently, and that [you] enjoy most,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctoralex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Dimitriu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kahn agrees that lower-energy activities can be effective in reducing symptoms of ADHD, but he does note that you will need to do them for longer than high-energy activities to get the full impact. Cardio<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High intensity cardio like running, cross-training, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27013028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-intensity interval training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HIIT) workouts can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11828226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise your dopamine levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a short amount of time, allowing you to benefit from better brain function after only a brief workout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-biking-or-swimming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Biking or swimming<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people overlook the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/healthyliving\/cycling-health-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/take-the-plunge-for-your-heart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can both get pretty intense! There are cardio benefits to both, and since you can do them indoors or outdoors, these activities are a great choice for someone with ADHD who gets easily bored by performing the same type of exercise in the same environment day after day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-crossfit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. CrossFit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kahn notes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/ATTN_06_12_Exercise.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CrossFit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a particularly high-intensity exercise that might appeal to people with ADHD; there\u2019s a lot of variety, often some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-self-esteem-crossfit-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friendly competition and camaraderie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a push for showing up regularly, which fosters consistency and helps form habits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-team-sports\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Team sports<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team sports with higher levels of consistent movement are a great way to achieve regular moderate exercise, says Dr. Kahn\u2014think soccer, basketball, and hockey. The team setting may also help support you (or your child) with social development, since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/for-adults\/relationships-social-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with ADHD often struggle in this area<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important, though, to make sure your coach and teammates are a good fit for you. Dr. Kahn says cross-country track is a particularly great team sport for people with ADHD, since it involves high-intensity cardio, allows for a bit more independence, and has a good reputation for being diverse in its team members.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-martial-arts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Martial arts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also a moderate-intensity exercise, many forms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6352161\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">martial arts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are perfect for adults and kids with ADHD. If you\u2019re not a fan of traditional exercise or team sports, then karate, taekwondo, judo, or jiu-jitsu might be a beneficial alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMartial arts have a unique tie-in to the brain,\u201d says Dr. Kahn, \u201cemphasizing mind-body connections like mindfulness and deep breathing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like with team sports, it\u2019s important to work with an instructor that understands neurodiversity; Dr. Kahn says he spends a lot of time working with patient families on finding the right dojo for their child (i.e., one that can accommodate someone who may be more impulsive than their peers).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-yoga-and-pilates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Yoga and Pilates\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not the gold standard for exercising with ADHD, there are still benefits to low-impact activities that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7567196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assist with emotional regulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as yoga and Pilates. Some people with ADHD have trouble focusing their attention long enough to achieve a beneficial state of mindfulness or meditation, but incorporating these practices into a physical activity\u2014and enhancing the mind-body connection\u2014can make it a bit easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"starting-an-exercise-routine-with-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting an exercise routine with ADHD\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having trouble making exercising part of your routine, it\u2019s important to know what your own personal barriers are. For example, Dr. Kahn says someone who spends 20 of their 30 available exercise minutes searching for a missing sneaker or earbud might benefit from setting out a bin the night before with all the things they\u2019ll need to workout in the morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also work on making exercise more fun\u2014more like play!\u2014and less like drudgery, so you have more motivation to work out. It\u2019s wise to eliminate your usual distractions; if opening up a social media app on your phone always ends in you accidentally spending all your free time scrolling instead of exercising, set time limits on your device to avoid getting sucked in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, anticipate that starting a new routine will take some time: \u201cHabit formation is something that can happen at different rates for different people, and ADHD comes with lower frustration tolerance, so it\u2019s going to take some work,\u201d Dr. Kahn says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"exercising-safely-with-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercising safely with ADHD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the maximum benefits in managing your ADHD, you may want to consider exercising alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adhd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other ADHD therapies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as medication, diet, and counseling. But if you\u2019re taking stimulant medication, be mindful of when you take your daily dosage and when you exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI generally advise people to avoid exercise in the first few hours of taking a stimulant,\u201d says Dr. Dimitriu. \u201cWith higher-dose stimulants, there is some remote risk of tachycardia or arrhythmia, especially if the stimulant dose is high, the workout is intense, or the person is dehydrated or hot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/working-out-on-adderall\/\"><b>Is it safe to exercise while taking Adderall?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, be mindful that if you\u2019re taking a mood-balancing drug like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/intuniv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intuniv<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, higher doses can lower your blood pressure and cause fatigue or nausea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preworkout and ADHD medication can interact because often workout supplements contain caffeine. Taking more than one stimulant at the same time can have negative side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking any dietary or exercise vitamins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond those concerns, you can exercise whenever you choose on most ADHD medications, but if you have the flexibility, consider working out at a time that provides the biggest benefits.
