Doctors call this phenomenon \u201crebound congestion,\u201d or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhinitis medicamentosa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it is a very real problem. In fact, it could be responsible for up to 9% of visits to allergists and ENT doctors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-nasal-spray-addiction-real\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is nasal spray addiction real?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before discussing Afrin nasal spray addiction, we have to answer: What is Afrin? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-sinus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oxymetazoline) is a nasal decongestant spray used to relieve a stuffy nose and sinus pressure. Afrin isn\u2019t the only culprit of rebound nasal congestion. Nasal decongestant sprays, which reduce nasal swelling and congestion by constricting the blood vessels in the nose, include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-nasal-spray\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxymetazoline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxymetazoline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Neo-Synephrine (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenylephrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenylephrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Otrivine (xylometazoline), and Privine (naphazoline).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-sinus\/what-is\"><b>What is Afrin?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As cold and flu season begins, you may be interested in using this OTC remedy. But you should beware of the side effects of using it too often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand how nasal spray addiction happens, let\u2019s take a quick look at your nasal anatomy. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/annapolisallergy.com\/meet-our-providers\/\">Duane Gels<\/a>, MD, an allergist with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annapolis Allergy and Asthma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Maryland, the blood vessels in your nose expand and contract to manage the flow of mucus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe nose is packed with blood vessels,\u201d Dr. Gels says. \u201cAs our position changes from standing to sitting to lying down, the weight of the blood shifts.\u201d This keeps your nose from clogging up when you change positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adrenaline can change blood flow to your nose as well. \u201cAdrenaline released into the blood during a fight or flight response (such as running to evade a predator) attaches to receptors in the nose, widening the passages so we can breathe easier,\u201d Dr. Gels explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He explains that oxymetazoline (the active ingredient in Afrin) actually works by mimicking adrenaline in your nose. It forces your nostrils open by squeezing the blood out of your nasal tissues. When you spray a shot of Afrin nasal spray into your nose, you will feel immediate relief from congestion\u2014but the effects don\u2019t last.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this effect can cause you to need more of the nasal spray to achieve the same effect, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s not a true addiction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because it doesn\u2019t create a physiological dependence on the spray.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the results of Afrin use are short-lived, the side effects\u2014like rebound congestion\u2014are not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-rebound-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is rebound congestion?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the blood drains from your nose, so do the oxygen and nutrients that blood brings with it. Your nasal tissues need these things, so once the Afrin wears off, your body overcompensates by drawing more blood to your nose, and you feel even more congested than you did before\u2014which makes you want to use it again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRebound congestion is increasing nasal congestion as the decongestant nasal spray wears off, causing the patient to use more spray to combat the continued congestion,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/susan-besser-md\">Susan Besser<\/a>, MD, a primary care provider specializing in family medicine at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercy Personal Physicians<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Baltimore. \u201cSo, the patient continually feels a need to use the spray to combat the continued congestion. In effect, this leads to dependency on the medication to control the symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it becomes a vicious cycle. After a few days of use, the nasal spray will relieve your congestion for shorter and shorter periods of time, causing a rebound effect. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK538318\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebound congestion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can get so bad that eventually, the Afrin doesn\u2019t clear your airway at all. The problem can go on for months to years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/afrin-vs-flonase\/\"><b>Afrin vs. Flonase<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms-of-nasal-spray-overuse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of nasal spray overuse<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do you know if you\u2019re addicted? Well, nasal congestion that returns and doesn\u2019t go away is the main symptom of using too much of a decongestant nasal spray. The main symptom of congestion is a stuffy nose. However, you may experience a feeling of needing to use more and more of the spray just to be able to breathe regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience rebound congestion, it\u2019s possible you may experience other symptoms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy nose\/nasal passages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all cases of rebound congestion will cause symptoms other than nasal congestion. Symptoms other than nasal congestion may be attributed to other causes, such as allergies. In severe cases, overuse of a decongestant spray can lead to damage and inflammation of the nasal tissue. Your healthcare provider may recommend stopping the spray and starting a different treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rebound-congestion-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebound congestion treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you treat this vicious cycle? The best way to break an Afrin addiction, according to Dr. Besser, is to stop taking the medication cold turkey. \u201cExpect to be miserable for a few days while the body recovers,\u201d she says. The following measures can be taken while the body recovers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use a nasal steroid,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Flonase (fluticasone), to help reduce congestion and inflammation in the nasal passages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use an antihistamine spray<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Astepro (azelastine), which can help treat congestion and other nasal symptoms caused by allergies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/deep-sea-nasal-spray\/what-is\">saline nasal spray<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can help drain and loosen the mucus causing congestion.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try an oral decongestant <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) or Sudafed PE (phenylephrine) can help relieve inflammation and congestion in the nose after stopping a decongestant spray.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use limited doses of Afrin as a last resort. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you feel only Afrin spray will work, Dr. Besser says, it&#8217;s okay for a day or two. \u201cI have even seen ENT doctors recommend it for very limited use,&#8221; she says. &#8220;But I wouldn&#8217;t suggest reaching for it first; use all other measures before Afrin.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid Afrin dependence in the first place, there are several other treatment options for nasal congestion that won\u2019t trigger a dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the problem is allergies, topical nasal steroids (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/singulair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasacort-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasacort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) reduce allergic inflammation over a couple days,\u201d Dr. Gels says. \u201cThese are available over the counter. Afrin isn\u2019t the only type of nasal spray that can give you relief from cold, flu, and allergy symptoms. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aaoallergy.org\/you-want-me-to-spray-what-up-my-nose-%EF%BB%BF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several types of nasal sprays,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nasal steroid sprays <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work by decreasing inflammation to improve symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.
