Fertility<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is even stronger evidence regarding vitamin D for male fertility. \u201cThere have been numerous studies that have found positive association between vitamin D levels and total sperm count and motility,\u201d Dr. Gollapalli explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rbej.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12958-021-00789-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study from 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that supplementing vitamin D helped boost sperm motility in men who had low vitamin D levels and decreased sperm motility. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanreview.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/499-505.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study, from 2022,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that men who experienced unexplained infertility also often had significantly low vitamin D levels, suggesting that vitamin D plays an important role in fertility and sperm health.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Mental health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D benefits for mental health may include mood regulation and decreased depression, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lindsay Delk, a registered dietitian nutritionist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodandmooddietitian.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Mood Dietitian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23377209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown a link between low vitamin D levels and depression, as well as an association between boosting vitamin D levels and improved symptoms of depression,\u201d Delk explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4011048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A review published in 2014<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that taking a vitamin D supplement had many of the same effects as taking an antidepressant, Delk pointed out. Of course, vitamin supplementation is not a substitute for mental health treatment, including medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence for the role that vitamin D may play in weight loss is mixed. For example,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6681300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a systematic review and meta-analysis from 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that vitamin D supplementation reduced BMI and waist size in people who were overweight or dealing with obesity. However, no data was found regarding fat mass, fat percentage, or other body compositions.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Fulltext\/507418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that vitamin D supplementation didn\u2019t affect BMI, waist circumference, or waist-to-hip ratios.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-hair-growth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Hair growth<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not much is known about vitamin D and hair growth, says Dr. Gollapalli. \u201cVitamin D plays an unclear role in hair follicle health,\u201d he says. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32792884\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that people with hair loss have lower levels of vitamin Dr. Gollapalli explains, suggesting that there is a relationship between vitamin D and hair loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere also appears to be a higher occurrence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/why-is-my-hair-falling-out\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alopecia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in patients with low vitamin D,\u201d Dr. Gollapalli says. \u201cBut there have not been conclusive studies showing a clear relationship between vitamin D supplementation and stopping hair loss.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hair-loss-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Hair loss treatments and medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-vitamin-d-per-day-does-a-man-need\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much vitamin D per day does a man need?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended daily allowance (RDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for vitamin D varies based on age, but not on sex. The current recommendation is that men and women aged 19-70 supplement with 600 IUs of vitamin D. However, other organizations have different recommendations. For example, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/96\/7\/1911\/2833671\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocrine Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that adults may need about 1500-2000 IUs per day to maintain a vitamin D level greater than 30 ng\/mL.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many healthcare providers don\u2019t think the recommendations are high enough when it comes to increasing low vitamin D levels, says Delk. She suggests working with your healthcare provider to determine the best dosage for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different providers will have different recommendations on how to supplement based on your unique health profile. \u201cThe dosage for supplementation depends on multiple factors, including baseline vitamin D levels and the specific individual\u2019s capacity to absorb and thereafter metabolize vitamin D in their liver,\u201d explains Dr. Gollapalli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-much-vitamin-d-should-i-take\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D dosage recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t different based on your weight,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2451847621000646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found that vitamin D requirements might be higher in people who are overweight or obese, with obese people needing double or triple the recommended amount. Sometimes called the sunshine vitamin, your body produces vitamin D when you\u2019re exposed to the sun. \u201cIf a man doesn\u2019t eat vitamin D-rich food every day, doesn&#8217;t spend time daily in the sun, or uses sunscreen to protect his skin, he could be at risk for low vitamin D,\u201d says Delk. Dr. Gollapalli emphasizes the role that diet can play in vitamin D deficiency, explaining that men who follow strict vegan diets are at particular risk.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people don\u2019t have vitamin D deficiency symptoms, which makes it tricky to identify without a blood test. Unfortunately, because of pollution, time spent indoors, and geographical location, many people aren\u2019t able to get enough vitamin D from the sun.
