Isn\u2019t it better to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take medication you don\u2019t really need?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, yes&#8230;and no! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are powerful drugs designed to kill infectious diseases caused by bacteria\u2014think <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/strep-throat-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ear-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ear infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/uti-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among others\u2014but they\u2019re no good in the fight against common infections caused by viral illnesses. Taking an antibiotic when you have a virus like the common cold or flu won\u2019t help you, and worse, it can actually do some harm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking antibiotics for a cold [is one of the things] that causes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/antimicrobial-resistance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotic resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhealth.org\/doctors\/natalie-long-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natalie Long, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a University of Missouri Health Care family practitioner. \u201cWhen you do that, all the non-harmful bacteria in your body are exposed to the antibiotic and can adapt or evolve, making it harder for them to be killed by that antibiotic in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, if you\u2019ve got a bacterial infection, you probably need an antibiotic to get rid of it\u2014and yes, you need to take every single pill, regardless of how quickly you start feeling better. Here\u2019s why.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-antibiotics-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do antibiotics work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of antibiotics: bacteriostatic and bactericidal, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summithealth.com\/doctors\/provider\/1861846776\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gwen Egloff-Du, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at Summit Medical Group in New Jersey. Bacteriostatic antibiotics, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxycycline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stop bacterial growth. Bactericidal antibiotics, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cephalexin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cephalexin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, kill the bacteria itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you show up sick at your healthcare provider\u2019s office, they assess your symptom history to determine if your illness is viral or bacterial. If you have a bacterial infection requiring the use of antibiotics, says Long, they will consider the organ system affected. Different parts of the body harbor various types of bacteria common to that location, so healthcare providers prescribe antibiotics that have a good chance of being effective there (i.e., ear infections are caused by different bacteria than UTIs, and will likely require a different kind of antibiotic).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the severity of the infection helps determine the length of your treatment, with less severe illnesses typically requiring a shorter course of antibiotics than more serious infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-your-healthcare-provider-determine-the-duration-of-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does your healthcare provider determine the duration of antibiotics?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes you take an antibiotic for five days, but sometimes it\u2019s 14. What gives?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Long says that treatments vary based on several factors, and physicians and researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspharmacist.com\/article\/duration-too-long-for-most-antibiotics-prescribed-for-sinusitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continually revisit the duration of antibiotic treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome infections are clear cut, like ear infections, and the duration is pretty standardized,\u201d she explains. \u201cOthers, like UTIs, have a range of anywhere from three to 14 days based on how sick you are, whether you need to be admitted to the hospital, and how quickly you respond to the drug.\u201d Other important determining factors are the antibiotic used to treat the infection and other chronic conditions you may have, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, which may require longer courses of antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-don-t-finish-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you don\u2019t finish antibiotics?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two reasons why you need to take the full prescribed treatment of antibiotics, Dr. Egloff-Du says. The first is obvious: Your healthcare provider selected the therapy for a reason, and that\u2019s to get you healthy again. The second reason? The dreaded antibiotic resistance we mentioned earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy completing your course of treatment, you increase the odds of killing all the bacteria responsible for causing your current illness,\u201d explains Dr. Egloff-Du. \u201cWhen you halt treatment early, you allow a small portion of bacteria to remain in your body, and that bacteria has the potential to strengthen, change, and develop resistance.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This increases the risk of resistant infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, referred to as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsinhealth.nih.gov\/2014\/02\/stop-spread-superbugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superbugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d by health professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, even if you\u2019re feeling better after a few days, that doesn\u2019t mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the bacteria that made you sick is actually gone. Per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/antimicrobial-resistance\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat that affects upward of 2.8 million people every year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antibiotic-stewardship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antimicrobial stewardship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a practice enforced by various healthcare professionals, helps ensure that the right antibiotic is prescribed at the right dose and for the correct amount of time to maximize patient outcomes and minimize the development of antibiotic resistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-miss-a-dose-of-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you miss a dose of antibiotics?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look, we\u2019ve all been there\u2014when you\u2019re supposed to do something twice a day for two weeks, it\u2019s not hard to forget about it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once. In fact, it\u2019s so common that Dr. Long says she actually considers this when she prescribes common antibiotics to patients (because it\u2019s easier to remember one pill a day versus four!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what should you do if you miss a dose of antibiotics? That depends on how long it takes you to realize your mistake. \u201cIf you are a few hours late in taking your antibiotic, take it as soon as you remember,\u201d advises Dr. Egloff-Du. \u201cBut if your next dose is due soon, do not double up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general rule is that if you are more than 50% of the way toward your next dose, you should skip it. So, for example, if you are supposed to take your antibiotic every 12 hours, you could take it if you are less than six hours away from your next scheduled dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, take the next dose when it\u2019s due, understanding that your therapy may need to be extended to incorporate the dose you missed. (If you\u2019re not sure what to do, remember that you can always ask your primary care provider or pharmacist for assistance.) For people who struggle to remember their medication, Dr. Egloff-Du offers a few helpful tips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany patients find pillboxes helpful, and others set alarms on their cellphones,\u201d she says. \u201cCombining [your dose] with one of your daily routines, like taking it when you eat breakfast at 8 a.m. every morning, can also be helpful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-medication-reminder-apps\/\"><b>The best pill reminder smartphone apps<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss several doses or days of antibiotics for any reason, Dr. Egloff-Du adds, it\u2019s important to talk to your healthcare provider; likewise, if unpleasant side effects are deterring you from taking your antibiotic prescription, you should also pick up the phone\u2014your healthcare provider may be able to suggest an alternative therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you start to feel better before finishing the medication, completing the full course of antibiotics is crucial. That\u2019s because stopping antibiotics early can lead to incomplete treatment and increase the risk of antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat. Your best bet? Follow your healthcare provider\u2019s instructions, consulting them for guidance if you\u2019re unsure about missed doses or side effects.
