Both conditions are associated with low dopamine, a chemical used by the brain to control muscle movements. For Parkinson&rsquo;s disease, damage to the part of the brain that produces dopamine causes its levels to be too low. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RLS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believe one part of the brain does not use dopamine the way it should. As a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/dopamine-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receptor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acts as dopamine in the brain, allowing people with Parkinson&rsquo;s or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RLS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to achieve better <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and coordination. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be taken as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immediate-release<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pramipexole-dihydrochloride-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended-release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes prescribed as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mirapex-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirapex ER<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However,people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RLS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immediate-release<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole because doses are lower and usually taken once nightly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other issues are the same no matter what form of pramipexole is taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects-of-pramipexole-for-parkinsons-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinson&rsquo;s disease<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most commonly experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pramipexole-dihydrochloride\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=3f90971a-e005-4dd3-bb93-b09125ada3c8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depend on the condition being treated and its severity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to occur in people with advanced Parkinson&rsquo;s. For them, the most commonly experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are involuntary muscle movements, postural hypotension, and insomnia. As a general rule, however, people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RLS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience far fewer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are less likely to have problems compared to those who take it for Parkinson&rsquo;s disease. The most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking pramipexole for RLS are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flu<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the extremities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuffy nose<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are reports of people experiencing a worsening of their symptoms or augmentation (symptoms appearing earlier in the day) when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RLS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-pramipexole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of pramipexole<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/97805\/pramipexole\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Involuntary muscle movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling asleep suddenly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthostatic hypotension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in mental status<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hallucinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in posture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fibrosis of the abdominal cavity or lungs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compulsive behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual urges or loss of impulse control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal symptoms resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"pramipexole-and-dyskinesia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyskinesia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levodopa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levodopa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause the uncontrollable jerks, twitches, and movements that many individuals associate with the disease. However, the incidence is related to the severity of the underlying condition. In clinical trials, almost half of people with advanced Parkinson&rsquo;s experienced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyskinesias<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and another 28% experienced extrapyramidal symptoms, such as grimacing and other involuntary movements. Typically, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is already a pronounced aspect in many Parkinson&rsquo;s patients by the time the disease is advanced. For people with early-stage Parkinson&rsquo;s, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not a significant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also not a significant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RLS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because the dosage is smaller. If involuntary movements start happening or get worse while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, inform the prescriber.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pramipexole-and-sudden-sleep-attacks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sudden sleep attacks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e18b67b6-a085-43e5-bb2b-fe74fa00cb65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 3% to 6% of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinson&rsquo;s disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fell asleep while engaged in normal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daily activities, such as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talking, eating, or working. Most of the time, falling asleep was preceded by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but some people have reported falling asleep when completely alert and awake. Having sudden sleep attacks is considered a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the risk of accidents, falls, injury, or death. Anybody taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who falls asleep without wanting to should inform the prescriber. The drug may need to be discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pramipexole-and-postural-deformity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and postural deformity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment is associated with postural deformities in people with advanced Parkinson&rsquo;s, most notably bent spine syndrome and Pisa syndrome. With bent spine syndrome, people are unable to stand straight, either bending forward at the hip or tilting sideways. With Pisa syndrome, the head faces down because the neck bends forward. These problems usually happen when starting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or increasing the dose. They typically improve when the dose is reduced or the drug is stopped altogether. Postural deformity is not life-threatening, but it can dramatically impair the quality of life. Talk to the prescriber if posture starts changing when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-pramipexole-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rsquo;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Mirapex-pramipexole-dihydrochloride-1745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">begin early in treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea, dizziness, headache, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trouble sleeping<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strange dreams, fatigue, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and increased urination. Some of the mental and muscle problems are delayed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include hallucinations, memory impairment, sudden sleep onset, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and changes in muscle tone. Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also delayed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome symptoms, however, occur soon after the drug is discontinued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-pramipexole-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pramipexole<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects of pramipexole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may improve as the body adapts to the drug, but it&rsquo;s not guaranteed. In some cases, doses may need to be reduced or the drug may need to be discontinued for improvement of certain adverse effects, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, postural deformities, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
