Many of these sensations resemble vertigo, so you may have wondered: Can stress cause vertigo?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The relationship between vertigo and stress is complicated, and experts are trying to understand how the two are connected. What\u2019s known is that stress alone doesn\u2019t trigger vertigo, but it can exacerbate it. Not only that, experiencing vertigo can be stressful in itself, and can cause stress and anxiety to increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at the way that stress influences vertigo and vice-versa, as well as some strategies and treatments for keeping both your stress and vertigo at bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-vertigo\/\"><b>What it\u2019s like living with vertigo<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-vertigo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes vertigo?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common cause of vertigo is when\u00a0 small calcium crystals, called otoconia, become loose in the inner ear.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/benign-paroxysmal-positional-vertigo-bppv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These crystals move around and make you feel off-balance. People with BPPV will notice symptoms most often when they go from a lying down position to upright position, or anytime they change position suddenly.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first signs of BPPV can be alarming and quite uncomfortable. \u201cIt initially manifests through sudden minute-long episodes of spinning that can even prompt vomiting,\u201d says Christine Kingsley, APRN, a provider at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lunginstitute.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Connecticut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms of BPPV involve room-spinning dizziness. These bouts can last from several seconds up to several minutes. \u201cTypically, symptoms of BPPV are brought on by head turns, turning over in bed, or when getting out of bed in the morning,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/amysarow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Sarow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, AuD, a Michigan-based audiologist.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BPPV often resolves spontaneously in a few days as the body absorbs the loose crystals, Dr. Sarow says. Other people may require treatment, including repositioning maneuvers to resolve symptoms. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/user-images.strikinglycdn.com\/res\/hrscywv4p\/image\/upload\/c_limit,fl_lossy,h_9000,w_1200,f_auto,q_auto\/1168158\/34092_48730.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modified Epley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> maneuver can be done at home by yourself to help reposition the crystal and resolve symptoms. Vitamin D supplementation has been shown to decrease recurrence of BPPV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is only one cause of vertigo. Other medical conditions can cause or contribute to vertigo,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21769-vertigo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meniere\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labyrinthitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vestibular neuritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesteatoma (abnormal epithelial cells in the inner ear)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head trauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior ear surgery\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acoustic neuroma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications can also affect your sense of balance and lead to vertigo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-stress-cause-vertigo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can stress cause vertigo?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people experience vertigo-like symptoms during stressful times. Stress can make you lightheaded, cause a rapid heartbeat, and make you feel dizzy. But stress on its own doesn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vertigo. \u201cThe truth is, mental stress can only catalyze vertigo and make it worse, but it&#8217;s not a stand-alone cause for vertigo,\u201d Kingsley explains. Even though stress does not cause vertigo, it can contribute to the intensity of vertigo symptoms\u2014or make the spells feel like they are lasting longer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a review published in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3406321\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers of Neurology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stress hormones\u2014such as cortisol and corticosterone\u2014that are released in response to stressors may affect the functioning of your inner ear, which can exacerbate vertigo symptoms. Additionally, people who experience vertigo from other causes may notice an uptick in their stress and anxiety levels. In other words, experiencing vertigo can be a stressful experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertigo associated with stress will look different than other types of vertigo, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingsley. One of the defining characteristics of stress-related vertigo is that it\u2019s shorter lived, usually lasting less than a minute, she explains. On the other hand, medically induced vertigo often lasts longer and can only be relieved by treating the underlying condition itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the end of the day, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is an issue caused by inner-ear dysfunction,\u201d Kingsley says, \u201cwhile vertigo caused by stress is usually a product of the combined effects of increased cortisol levels and other imbalances within the body such as vascular issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vertigo-from-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertigo from anxiety\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stress-vs-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and stress are related<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but anxiety usually causes more intense symptoms and is often a symptom of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nervous system disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or phobias. Many of these disorders have symptoms similar to vertigo, like lightheadedness and dizziness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, there is such a strong link between anxiety disorders and dizziness that there is a term to describe it: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/ohns\/OHNS-healthcare\/earinstitute\/conditions-and-services\/conditions\/PPPD.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPPPD is a type of dizziness that can be provoked or exacerbated by anxiety,\u201d Dr. Sarow says. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episodes of this type of dizziness may last from minutes to hours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PPPD is not the same as vertigo, but it shares many symptoms. People who experience migraines, motion sickness, or vestibular system disorders are more likely to develop the condition, says Dr. Sarow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4946194\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMC Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found another connection between vestibular disorders and anxiety: People with anxiety disorders are more likely to develop BPPV, especially women and people with cerebrovascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is also often something that develops as a result of experiencing vertigo. Think about it: Vertigo can be frightening and debilitating. Many experience anxiety and panic thinking about a recurrence of vertigo. Reducing stress is a good idea. Simple lifestyle changes can have a profound impact on reducing stress. These<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/top-ways-to-reduce-daily-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging in routine physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making sure to get enough sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying hydrated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing mindfulness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meditateing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journaling\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing gratitude<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to a therapist or mental health counselor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing vertigo see your healthcare provider. You need vital signs and an exam and to discuss your current medications. Treating the underlying issue should cause the vertigo to resolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, medications are prescribed to help treat symptoms of vertigo, such as dizziness and nausea.
