On rare occasions, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be caused by a fungus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common symptoms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or pressure across the upper cheeks or forehead<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow or greenish nasal drainage<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be acute (short), lasting up to four weeks, or subacute, lasting from 4 to 12 weeks. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic sinusitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lasts longer than 12 weeks. Not all sinus infections require antibiotics. Only those caused by bacterial infections will improve when treated with medication. Viral sinus infections clear up with only supportive treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-bactrim-good-for-sinus-infections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> good for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfamethoxazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trimethoprim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is not the first-line treatment for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acute sinusitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where antibiotics are indicated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The first choice for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/augmentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with clavulanate (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augmentin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marysheehan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Sheehan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RPh, a pharmacist in Akron, Ohio.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in the past, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2004\/1101\/p1697.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment choice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for patients who had ongoing symptoms or were allergic to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penicillins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cephalosporins, and related medications. This medication was also a choice for patients who recently took a different antibiotic that didn&rsquo;t work and were in need of another treatment. In recent years, higher rates of bacterial resistance to Bactrim have made it less useful for sinusitis, and currently, it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0194599815572097\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in most cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to treat several types of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, predominantly urinary tract infections and infections related to methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA). This medication combines two antibiotics that work together to rid the body of the bacteria causing the infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used to treat bacterial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcus pneumoniae<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/david-seitz-md-b42476a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Seitz, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified physician practicing in New York. &ldquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also help treat infections caused by other bacterial strains, depending on the severity and type of infection.&rdquo; The concern is that Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of bacterial sinusitis, and this bacteria has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0194599815572097?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%20%200pubmed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant likelihood of being resistant to Bactrim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is no longer a common choice for persistent sinusitis. If symptoms are severe or do not improve with initial antibiotics, stronger antibiotics are available, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levaquin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-bactrim-should-i-take-for-a-sinus-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should I take for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider will prescribe the appropriate dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat your individual symptoms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes in two strengths:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 400-80 milligrams<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim DS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 800-160 milligrams<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bactrim-ds\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means &ldquo;double strength.&rdquo; The dose may be adjusted based on the patient&#8217;s age, weight, kidney function, or illness. Depending on these factors, your provider could prescribe anywhere from one to two tablets of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reference.medscape.com\/drug\/bactrim-trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-342543#0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim DS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 800-160<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> milligrams or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 400-80 milligrams every 12 to 24 hours. The dose for children is based on weight and often comes in a liquid form. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should never be given to infants younger than 2 months old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dose of antibiotic and length of treatment depend on the illness or the bacteria likely causing the illness. More aggressive infections require longer treatments and higher-strength antibiotics than other infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most antibiotics, it may take three to four days for people to notice improvement after starting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Be sure to take the medication as directed. You should finish taking the full course of antibiotics, even after you start to feel better.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bactrim-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any medication, there are potential <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with or without food. Notify your provider if you develop:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain or swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These can be signs of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Discuss your health history with your provider to avoid any potential issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line-bactrim-can-treat-bacterial-sinus-infections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can treat bacterial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus infections<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinus infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically caused by viruses and don&rsquo;t require treatment with antibiotics.
