But for pharmacy staff, it also means working in close quarters and coming into contact with sick people all day, every day. It\u2019s likely you worry about staying healthy this time of year. Luckily, there are ways to avoid catching seasonal viruses such as colds, flu, COVID-19, and other illnesses in the pharmacy environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9-ways-pharmacy-staff-can-prevent-illness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 ways pharmacy staff can prevent illness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 7.8 million workers missed work in January 2022 due to illness, injury, or a medical problem or appointment. This is more than double the amount (3.7 million) from January 2021. What\u2019s more, about 4.2 million workers who usually worked full time, had to work part time, due to illness, injury, or a medical problem or appointment. This is also more than double the amount (1.8 million) from the previous January. But, with a few preventive steps, you can reduce your risk of becoming part of these statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tips on reducing your chance of getting sick if you work in a pharmacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-wear-a-mask\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Wear a mask.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 pandemic taught us that masks work to prevent the spread of illness. For pharmacy staff working in close quarters, an N95 mask that fits properly can prevent you from accidentally inhaling airborne viruses that are expelled when sick people sneeze, cough, laugh, or even speak. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an N95 respirator filters out at least 95% of very small particles, including both bacteria and viruses, by forming a seal around the nose and mouth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some individuals may prefer a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/personal-protective-equipment-infection-control\/n95-respirators-surgical-masks-face-masks-and-barrier-face-coverings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surgical mask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which does not form a seal around the nose and mouth. Worn properly, a surgical mask will block large-particle droplets, splashes, and sprays that may contain viruses and bacteria, from reaching the mouth and nose\u2014and may decrease exposure of your secretions to other individuals. A surgical mask will not, however, filter very small particles in the air that can be transmitted by coughing or sneezing. They are not considered to provide complete protection, but any mask is better than no mask.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-wash-your-hands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Wash your hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it a habit to wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Or, use a 60%-70% alcohol-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hand-sanitizer-kill-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanitizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if soap and water are not available. This is especially important after coming in contact with high-touch surfaces, like doorknobs or shared workstations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper handwashing can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/clean-hands\/data-research\/facts-stats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of respiratory illness in the general population by up to 21%. Because frequent handwashing can dry your skin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/everyday-care\/skin-care-basics\/dry\/coronavirus-handwashing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apply a moisturizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after washing and drying your hands (or after using hand sanitizer). Keeping travel-size tubes of hand sanitizer and moisturizer in your lab coat pocket or by your station, can help you remember to use them regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can get more information on proper handwashing from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/clean-hands\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and you can also order promotional materials such as fact sheets, posters, and bathroom mirror clings, to post around your pharmacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-wash-your-hands\/\"><b>When and how to wash your hands<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-clean-common-surfaces\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Clean common surfaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surfaces that are frequently touched, such as countertops, phones, counting trays\/spatulas, and computer keyboards, should be regularly disinfected. Although it may seem hard to fit extra cleaning into a day filled with vaccines, constant ringing phones, and multiple pages of prescriptions to fill, some staff members may jump at the chance to take a break from filling prescriptions to do some uninterrupted cleaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since mobile phones carry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/healthbeat\/healthy-tips\/quick-dose-is-your-cell-phone-making-you-sick\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 times more bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than most toilet seats, be sure to clean your own phone, too\u2014just check the manufacturer\u2019s website first, to be sure you are using the correct supplies. Some manufacturers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT204172\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have very specific instructions on how to clean your devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-get-your-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Get your vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to get so busy that you forget to get your own vaccines. But, it\u2019s essential for pharmacy staff to get a yearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make sure everyone on staff is up to date with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID boosters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/new-recommendations-for-pneumococcal-vaccination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important for adults older than age 65, as well as any staff members ages 19 to 64 who are immunocompromised or have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/diabetes-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or heart or lung conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-eat-a-healthy-diet-and-stay-hydrated\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Eat a healthy diet and stay hydrated.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to totally shun holiday treats, but try to eat a healthy diet the majority of the time. Choosing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/eat-not-fight-colds-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help control inflammation and strengthen your immune system. Load up on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts\u2014while limiting processed, fried, sugary, and salty foods. Be sure to consume a variety of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-should-i-take\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamins in your diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is thought that dietary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fimmu.2020.574029\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can boost your immunity. That means eating lots of citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit, as well as peppers, strawberries, and spinach. If your diet is lacking in vitamin C or other nutrients, you can add supplements where needed. Also, drink plenty of water to maintain a healthy immune system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-be-conscious-of-alcohol-consumption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Be conscious of alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enjoy some spiked eggnog on occasion (if it\u2019s compatible with your medical conditions and medications), but if you want to avoid getting sick, limit alcohol consumption. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4590616\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic alcohol exposure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can affect immune system function, making you more likely to develop infections (and also increases the risk of cancer). People who do drink should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/moderate-drinking.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limit alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intake to two drinks or less per day for men\u2014or one drink or less per day for women. Be mindful of serving sizes, too. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/what-standard-drink\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one drink is considered 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-be-sure-to-get-quality-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Be sure to get quality sleep.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep is critical to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4507722\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have chronic sleep problems. Adults ages 18-60 need seven or more hours of sleep per night, while adults ages 61-64 need seven to nine hours per night, and adults 65 and older need seven to eight hours per night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trouble sleeping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can work on improving your sleep habits by making some of these lifestyle changes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep the bedroom quiet, dark, and at a comfortable temperature for sleeping.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not use electronics in the bedroom\u2014this includes not just TVs and laptops, but phones, too.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise during the day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not eat large meals\u2014or consume alcohol or caffeine\u2014before bed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"8-exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Exercise.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular exercise can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7387807\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthen the immune system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both during and after activity, so lace up those sneakers. Adults need at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/guidelines\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">150 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per week of moderate-intensity physical activity, plus two days per week of muscle strengthening exercises. You can squeeze this in by walking for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and adding two strength training days. You can walk outside, in a gym, or even around the pharmacy on your breaks. On your days off, select from thousands of free YouTube videos that offer walking (or other cardiovascular) workouts and strength training sessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-stay-home-when-sick\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Stay home when sick.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/going-to-work-sick\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are sick, stay home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If others are sick, encourage them to stay home. Pharmacy staff members are tough as nails and stick together through thick and thin. No one wants to leave their colleagues understaffed and in a bind.
