Maybe you just have difficulty falling asleep from time to time. Either way, you may have turned to melatonin to help you catch more zzz\u2019s before trying a prescription medication or over-the-counter sleep aid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/actearly\/autism\/case-modules\/anticipatory-guidance\/03-closer-look.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a naturally occurring hormone that is produced by a tiny gland in the brain (called the pineal gland) that normally regulates the body\u2019s sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When sunlight gives way to darkness, the body is triggered to produce melatonin, which signals the body that it\u2019s time to sleep. But if you\u2019re exposed to light after sundown (that blue light from your phone counts, too), melatonin production is disrupted. That means melatonin levels don\u2019t rise as they should, potentially resulting in difficulty falling asleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, some people with sleep problems have chronically low levels of melatonin. For these individuals, small doses of melatonin supplements may play an important role in helping them get a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lab-produced, or synthetic, melatonin supplements can help with jet lag, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (a condition in which people have a hard time falling asleep before 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.), certain childhood sleep disorders, and pre-surgery anxiety, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/melatonin-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although more research is needed, this supplement may be helpful for individuals with insomnia. There\u2019s also some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/natural\/940.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that high doses of melatonin given to cancer patients in conjunction with treatment like chemotherapy may help shrink tumors and improve survival rates. But is it safe? However, because there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/melatonin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no standard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage, the amount it takes to overdose is not well understood by experts. Since melatonin is a dietary supplement\u2014not a medication\u2014it\u2019s not as strictly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/melatonin-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regulated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin formulations\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common form of melatonin is a pill or tablet that can be taken orally with water before bedtime, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/david-seitz-md-b42476a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Seitz, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, board-certified physician and medical director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascendantny.com\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ascendant Detox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York. Products in liquid form offer quicker absorption and faster results, he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin is also available as lozenges and sprays, and in combination products, along with herbs (like valerian root and passionflower), says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kelly-johnson-arbor-md-7a35b31b6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical toxicology physician and co-medical director at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Capital Poison Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dietary supplements containing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin may<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be combined with cannabidiol (CBD), which some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6326553\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates may be beneficial for sleep. Just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/doctor-people-should-consult-their-physician-using-cbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check with your healthcare professional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before using CBD if you haven\u2019t used it before, to make sure it is safe for you to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, melatonin comes in chewable tablets or gummies. Gummy supplements, a tasty and convenient formulation, are becoming increasingly popular among kids and those who have difficulty swallowing pills, Dr. Seitz says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When not to take melatonin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using melatonin is not a good idea for those with health conditions like autoimmune disorders or dementia, and individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to Dr. Seitz, melatonin may interact with certain medications\u2014it\u2019s not recommended for people with seizure disorders, those who are on blood thinners, or those undergoing surgery, due to the risk of serious side effects. It could also lower blood pressure, so those taking medication for hypertension should avoid melatonin because the combination could cause severely low blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is also important to note that melatonin can have an effect on hormone levels, so it should not be taken if you are taking hormone-altering medications,\u201d adds Dr. Seitz. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That includes hormonal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> replacement therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much melatonin is safe to take?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For children, the American Academy of Pediatrics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/sleep\/Pages\/melatonin-and-childrens-sleep.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starting at the lowest possible amount of melatonin\u20140.5 to 1 milligram (mg)\u2014about 30 to 90 minutes before bedtime, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-for-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 3 mg for children and 5 mg for adolescents (ages 10-19 years). Parents should be sure to consult with their child&#8217;s pediatrician first to determine a safe dose of melatonin. Then, monitor your child for adverse effects after consumption<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term use of melatonin is typically considered safe in healthy adults, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nicole-roach-rd-cdn-78ab3185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Roach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lenoxhill.northwell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lenox Hill Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New York. That said, long-term data on the safety of melatonin is lacking. There\u2019s no official recommendation for adults, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/melatonin\/melatonin-dosage-how-much-should-you-take\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1-5 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally considered a safe starting dose, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-dosage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 10 mg. Older adults should take the lowest dose of melatonin possible\u2014some individuals may find that small doses (1 mg or less) can be effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking too much melatonin can be dangerous,\u201d Dr. Seitz says, \u201cso it&#8217;s important to follow the dosage instructions on the product label.\u201d Always talk to your doctor about the right dosage for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin is usually metabolized quickly, with a half-life of about one to two hours after it is ingested, says Dr. Seitz. However, the effects of melatonin can last up to 12 hours in some people, he says. It\u2019s best not to drive or operate machinery within <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/natural\/940.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four to five hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of taking melatonin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taking melatonin, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start low, increasing slowly as needed, and always consult your healthcare provider with questions on dosing. If an adult or child takes too much melatonin, wake them every 30 minutes until symptoms have resolved, and reach out to your healthcare provider for medical advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s unlikely that taking melatonin will result in unconsciousness, some people may experience excessive drowsiness or abnormal behavior after taking it, says Dr. Johnson-Arbor. It\u2019s important to watch out for dangerous side effects: If the individual is exhibiting breathing irregularities or can\u2019t wake up after ingesting melatonin, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are concerned about accidental melatonin ingestion or overdose in yourself or your child, call the Poison Control at 800-222-1222 or use their online tool at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/triage.webpoisoncontrol.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poison.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advises Dr. Johnson-Arbor. \u201cBoth options are free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that not all instances of melatonin use will result in side effects; they will often be mild, but may last for several hours. The most important thing you can do is monitor for severe side effects and seek medical attention if needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin side effects in children include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drowsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bedwetting\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults may experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you die from melatonin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7122a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 260,435 cases of pediatric melatonin ingestion were reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers from 2012-2021. Nearly 85% of children were asymptomatic, but some developed severe symptoms and required hospitalization. Two children (ages 3 months and 13 months) died. Still, melatonin overdose deaths are very rare, and there is no known lethal dose. As a precaution, keep melatonin\u2014and all other medications\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/patientsafety\/features\/medication-storage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out of reach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and out of sight of children and pets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if you think you\u2019ve taken too much melatonin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common unwanted side effects from ingesting too much melatonin are sleepiness, headache, nausea, and agitation.
