Companies that produce vitamin supplements are not required to get approval from the Food and Drug Administration before selling their products, so it can be hard to determine whether they are safe or effective\u2014even if they contain the exact ingredients listed. And it can be risky to take certain supplements with prescription medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the FDA requires all supplements to be labeled correctly, not all companies follow these guidelines or report the amounts contained accurately. What\u2019s more, the majority of these supplements lack scientific evidence to support their claims to foster good health. Before you start taking any vitamins or supplements, discuss their safety and possible drug interactions with your healthcare provider or pharmacist. And remember, your best bet to get the required vitamins and minerals is eating a well-rounded, healthy diet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are a few examples of how supplements and medications can negatively impact one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vitamin-interactions-with-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin interactions with antidepressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of SSRI antidepressant medications with supplements can be especially dangerous. If you have an anxiety disorder or depression, your healthcare provider may prescribe a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Common SSRIs are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/escitalopram-oxalate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paxil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zoloft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are safe for most people, but when taken with certain supplements or vitamins, the results can be risky. Brandi Cole, Pharm.D., a medical advisory board member for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.personanutrition.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persona Nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains what supplements you can\u2019t take with SSRIs, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/st-johns-wort\"><b>St. John\u2019s Wort<\/b><\/a><b> may decrease a medication\u2019s effectiveness: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost SSRIs are extensively metabolized by liver enzymes, and supplements that affect these enzymes could potentially change the way your body eliminates SSRIs,\u201d Cole says. \u201cFor example; St. John\u2019s wort induces liver enzymes\u2014meaning it makes the liver eliminate certain prescription drugs more quickly than normal.\u201d Translation: St. John\u2019s wort causes your system to clear SSRIs sooner than intended, and without the correct amount of medication in your system, your medication can\u2019t work as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/5-htp\"><b>5HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)<\/b><\/a><b> can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements that contain serotonin or alter serotonin metabolism\u2014such as 5HTP (a serotonin precursor), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sam-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAMe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or St. John\u2019s wort can cause (the potentially life-threatening) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taken with SSRIs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be wondering if you can take multivitamins with antidepressants. If you are a woman who uses oral contraceptives for birth control, beware of St. John\u2019s wort. \u201cSt. John\u2019s wort can render contraceptives useless if you\u2019re taking it regularly,\u201d Cole says. \u201cIn fact, taking St. John\u2019s wort can decrease norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol levels by 13% to 15%, which can result in an unplanned pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"iron-supplement-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron supplement interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ferrous-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements can interact with a few different types of medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antibiotics and iron:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking iron alongside certain antibiotics, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tetracycline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tetracycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/minocycline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minocycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may decrease your body\u2019s absorption of the antibiotic prescription. Check with your healthcare provider before combining antibiotics and iron. They may recommend separating them by a few hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Thyroid hormone and iron:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Additionally, those taking synthetic thyroid hormone replacement such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levothyroxine-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthroid (levothyroxine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be sure to discuss with your healthcare provider all vitamin and mineral supplements that contain iron\u2014also soy, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/calcium-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, \u201cif taken within four hours of taking a synthetic thyroid hormone, may reduce the absorption rate,\u201d Dr. Cole says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"vitamin-e-and-blood-thinners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E and blood thinners<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thins the blood. If you\u2019re taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a prescription blood thinner (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), your risk of internal bleeding is increased, which may even be life-threatening. The same is true of the supplement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ginkgo-biloba-memory-enhance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ginkgo biloba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any vitamins or supplements with your blood thinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"magnesium-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements can disrupt the efficacy of several medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and antibiotics:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The efficacy of quinolones such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and tetracycline antibiotics such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxycycline-monohydrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014can be decreased when combined with magnesium supplements. To avoid this interaction, take the antibiotic more than 2 hours before or 6 hours after you take magnesium (or a vitamin or supplement that contains magnesium).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and calcium channel blockers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking magnesium along with a calcium channel blocker like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nifedipine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nifedipine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amlodipine-besylate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amlodipine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diltiazem-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diltiazem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/felodipine-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">felodipine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/verapamil-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verapamil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase your odds of dizziness and low blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and certain diabetes medications:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking antacids that contain magnesium hydroxide can increase the absorption of the diabetes medications <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glipizide-xl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glipizide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glyburide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glyburide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause low blood sugar. Consult with your provider before combining the two.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and digoxin:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019ve been prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lanoxin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lanoxin (digoxin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), your provider will carefully monitor your digoxin levels. That\u2019s because magnesium can decrease digoxin levels, making digoxin less effective. Talk to your provider if you\u2019re using magnesium supplements or any medications that contain magnesium, so they can adjust your treatment as needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and levothyroxine: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antacids or vitamins\/supplements that contain magnesium may decrease the efficacy of the thyroid medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levothyroxine-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levothyroxine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so discuss the risks of this combination with your provider if you are taking this drug. In most cases, the interaction can be avoided by separating when you take each medicine for at least 4 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Magnesium and osteoporosis drugs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking alendronate for osteoporosis, magnesium may reduce its absorption. If you\u2019re combining the two, take magnesium at least 30 minutes after you take alendronate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain drugs can make supplements less effective too. For example,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gentamicin-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gentamicin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the antifungal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amphotericin-b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphotericin B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, corticosteroids including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, antacids, and insulin may reduce magnesium levels in the body when combined.
